Does anybody know, if it would be technically possible that the AF is working on an aperture of 8 at other Canon Cameras too?

Some month ago, the GO where I am working bought some Cams for documentation. There we were definitifly told, that it is technically impossible to use the AF on an lens thath has an beginning aperture of >=8 on the 5D MK3. - Now it is possible. Interresting.

Need some advice:

I am looking for an compact Camera or Mirrorless for climbing or high-altitude hiking.
Preferences:
  • smaller an lighter than SLR
  • focus on high image quality
  • normal AF speed (shutter lag <0,5s)
  • able to use an polarisation filter e.g.
  • wide angle preference
Price unter 1500€ inclusive wideangle lens

I aimed at the Sony Cyber-shot RX100, but there are very variying tests. (Dpreview gives not the best notes. Color foto (German magazine) says superb,...) Which test to trust?
The Fuji 100s or the X-1E?

Which model would you prefer?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Bias of tests
« on: March 30, 2013, 06:13:28 AM »
Maybe you will be  ::) your eyes, but does anybody know, how the test-magazines (online, printed) get their cameras for testing?
Are these Cameras "specially improved" by the manufacturers? Or do test magazines get "normal" cameras from the production lines?

Need some advice:

For an trip around the globe, I bought an new 5DIII this week. But the images are very softvand not sharp. IQ of the 5DIIIs of other members of our local photo club are visibly better. I used wide angle lenses. 16-35 2.8 and the 12-24mm Tokina.
Is there an possibility to imptove IQ by sending it to Canon, or should I give it back and get the money refunded?
This is the second time, I have this problme in the last 3 years....

Or should I buy an D600 with an wideangle eg... lens?

Third Party Manufacturers / looking for an >400mm third party lens
« on: February 26, 2013, 02:32:32 PM »
My Canon 300mm 2.8 II  is heavily broken, a NACA 7. I used it with the 1.4 & 2.0 converter
Now I am looking for an new lens >400mm.

As I looked in the www, the Canon lenses are extraordinary expensive. Does anybody own an >400mm third party (Sigma, Tamron, Tokina,...) lens that is worth buying? I do not want to spend another 8000 € for this lens....

Lenses / Kenko TC - 2 models - which one to buy?
« on: October 14, 2012, 02:53:01 AM »

As read in the lens rumor forum, with an kenko TC the AF is working on an 100-400L. But which Kenko to buy?

Kenko 1,4x Teleplus Pro 300 or the MC4 AF 1.4 DGX?

What ist the difference in between them?

Lenses / Which online-test magazine is testing seriosly?
« on: October 09, 2012, 04:36:01 AM »
Which online-testmagazine do you trust in making honest tests?

I often looked at dpreview, or colorfoto (german magazine). But as they are often critizised, they have to much bias in ther tests. But which one to trust? Which one do you prefer?

Color foto often tests the IQ of lenses @ different bodies. I think this helps to find the right lens.

Lenses / Switching Canon 70-200 2.8L to Tamron 70-200 2.8 or not?
« on: October 08, 2012, 04:02:47 AM »
Dear community!

For more then a decade I´m using an Canon 2.8 70-200mm L lens (sometimes with an 1.4 extender). I´d like to buy a new camera body as an exchange for my unsatisfying 7D. (7DII?, 6D?, 5D3?)

My question is: Is the Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 Di SP LD Macro superior to my old Canon 70-200? Could I get an improved IQ with this lens?
Is this newer lens better for am crop sensor or an FF sensor then this old lens? more sharp?

(I do not want to buy an new Canon 70-200 2.8 L  II lens. For me, the 3 times higher price is a "no go" for my wallet. For this money I´d buy other equipment).

Thanks

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Quality gap 5DIII?
« on: July 15, 2012, 12:02:57 PM »
The institution I am working at, bought some 5DIII in the last weeks. There seems to be still an quality gap between the cameras itself. Our photographers took sample pictures to get used of the camera.
There is an highly visible difference in the quality of the pictures (noise, grain), they took with each of the MKIIIs.
Two of them went back to the selling company, 2 cameras will not be exchanged, although there is big noise >800 ISO.  >:(
The MKIII is no 500€ model! Our photographer are upset about this quality gap!
Why is Canon no able to produce Cameras at an constant high quality level?

But how to prevent getting an low quality MKIII an an private user?

Lenses / Chromatic abberation problem Tokina 12-24mm on Eos 60D & 7D
« on: July 01, 2012, 12:36:42 PM »
I need some help, please:

I bought a new Tokina 12-24mm lens for my Eos 60D.
The lens is sharp, there is nearly no vignetting, BUT there is a lot of Chromatic abberation, heavy chromatic abberation, at 15mm to 12mm. red and blue lines on the end of the edges.
Does anybody have the same problem?
What can I do? The lens has the problem @ an aperture of 4 to 22, @ 4.0 it is really heavy.

How can I correct the CAs? Is there any possibility to do so automatically (Canon DPP lens recipie), or do I have to correct it manually?
The same problem at my wife´s 7D.

Much thanks

Technical Support / Red dots & more noise
« on: June 16, 2012, 03:09:16 AM »
Hello!

My Eos 60D had to be repaired again (1st , some month ago, a big red horizontal line was visible in the pictures, then some weeks ago big noise came up @100 Iso -> changing the sensor again by Canon support).

My problem is, that the 60D shows some colorful red dots (5) near the center. And if I raise the Iso, noise is much higher than it was before the repair.

I sent the Cam back to Canon, but they told me that this tolerable. 5 colorful and glowing red dots are not worth reparing the Cam again.... And if I want to shoot high quality images @ higher ISOs, I have to buy a better Camera... :o

Does anybody have some advice, how to get the camera repaired again?

Software & Accessories / Looking for an light tripod for hiking
« on: May 12, 2012, 04:36:08 AM »
As I´m looking for an new backpack (my favourite is the F-stop satori exp by now (Much thanks for the tip!)) I´d like to buy a new tripod too.
More than one decade I´m using an Manfrotto 055C with the 268 head. But my scale counts more than 4,5 kg for it.
Can you give me some advice? (should be able to hold more than 6kg). lightweighted. easy to use.

Thanks
