Lenses / protecting little lenses that dont come with bags
« on: May 21, 2012, 06:01:21 AM »
I use these to protect my 50 f1.4 50 f1.8 lensbaby teleconverters and kenko extension tubes
though some people might appreciate the link

they are snug so dont take much extra room and i have found the lens hood reverse nicely over the opening to make them a nice little compact package

EOS Bodies / 5Dmk3 and 100f2.8L IS noise
« on: May 10, 2012, 07:20:12 PM »
playing with these last night and this lens makes some horrible noises with IS turned on
the 70-200 and 24-105 dont seem to make noises still have to test my 300 f4L
i wonder if its similar to the problem with the other lenses this problem shows up on
anyone else experienced it with the 100L?

since it would seem the D800E is benefiting quite a bit from a lack of AA filter
And the thing was announced before the 5dmk3 surely it wouldn't have been hard to
make a canon version where they just didnt install the thing, I think it would be alot more of a hit with still
shooters and video people can still get the normal one.

Anyone know how the DIY AA removals have gone?

Lenses / nice lens hood for nifty fifty 50mm f1.8 II
« on: May 06, 2012, 12:14:39 AM »
I grabbed one of these and have to say its great for this little lens
and worth getting as it is much nicer to simply clip a bayonet style hood on than have to screw one in

hope this helps anyone looking for a cheap good hood for their 50 1.8

EOS Bodies - For Stills / anyone have a 5Dmk3 and a kenko TC?
« on: April 03, 2012, 10:16:21 PM »
I contacted kenko about the TC not working on my 5Dmk3
and their response is they dont have any problems
this is interesting and leads me further to believe that my camera has a problem
does anyone else have a 5D3 and kenko teleconverter or extension tubes to test and see if they are getting
AF infor thorough mine just displays 00 in the aperture location

EOS Bodies / AF / AI Servo tips from 7D users
« on: March 28, 2012, 07:38:24 PM »
Just wondering if 7D users could give any specific AF / AI Servo tips for us with new 5Dmk3 since the AF system is so different than the previous 1D AF and the 5Dmk2 AF. Help us come up to speed quicker.
Since the 7D system is probably the closest AF system to the new system

currently I only use spot focus select point, I use back button focus,

EOS Bodies / DXO vs Reality
« on: March 28, 2012, 07:34:21 PM »
I'm just wondering, alot of people get REALLY worked up over these dxo tests, however theire numbers relating to various cameras (to me anyway) dont appear to reflect real world results take the medium format digital backs for example, these are simply amazing yet score lower than a sony or a nikon?

Personally i dont put any faith in this sort of analysis :P

Note: lucky i cant get smited to death by the DxO brigade :D

I discovered this last night, I'm very disappointed, I havent tried my kenko extension tubes yet, i'll try them later and see. I hope canon fix this with a firmware update

EOS Bodies / 5D2 vs 5D3 ISO100 around 50 test raws
« on: March 27, 2012, 07:03:59 PM »
So I spent about 8 hours doing this last night
3 tests, all ISO 100

test 1 - the AF micro adjust method using the canon utility
test 2 - shooting a test chart off a tripod
test 3 - handholding a shot to confirm

all tests using center point only
I also turned off the in camera lens correction stuff
anyway all the exif data is there

test 1 and 2 lit by 4 5500K constant lights & shoot through umbrellas
test 3 ambient tungsten light at night

lenses tested
16-35 f2.8 II
50mm 1.4
Sigma 85mm 1.4
100 f2.8L IS Macro
70-200 f2.8L IS II
300 f4L (i had to bump iso on test 3 up to 800 for these being hand held)

I didnt test the 24-105 because my wife was out and had the lens but i will do it and add it in

during this i discovered to my horror that the kenko DGX teleplus 1.4 teleconverter does not work on the 5Dmk3
nice of canon to kill that for me :(  :'(

Overall I feel the images are sharper however I think the 5Dmk2 still beats the 5Dmk3
I have not done any detailed manual focusing tests yet and havent done any more AI servo tests using the 70-200 yet either... maybe tonight.

Anyway happy downloading and comparing.

EOS Bodies / 5D mk3 - A few complaints
« on: March 25, 2012, 07:44:43 PM »
So i've been snapping away wildly all weekend with the 5Dmk3 and there are a couple of things that bug me
overall the build and handling are significant steps up but there is some silly stuff going on.

1 - The rate button, probably the single most useless button I have even seen on a camera EVER, which would be fine if you could assign it a usefull function instead such as a bracketing button like ever 1D has had since the 1Dmk1 remember that good ol 4MP kodak sensor? its nice to just hold a button down and scrollt he wheel bringing up the bracketed stops. having to go into the menu to enable bracketing on a PRO body is just plain lame. This could easily be fixed with a firmware update to enable assigning of more functions to that button
as for rate and protect the whole 2 features you can choose this button to perform, very underwhelming. As it is this button is a total bull tit.

2 - out of camera Jpeg files are horrible, accross the board there is far too much smearing going on they are well and truely overcooked, mushy and about as sharp as a bowling ball. I like to have medium jpg files writing to the SD card so i can just pop it out to give someone quick access to the pics without jumping through all the raw processing hoops. As it stands I'm really not going to give anyone these jpegs so i've turned it off all together until an update comes out.
This is particularly concerning because all the talk from the marketing machine talked up how all the improvements of blah blah stops is based on jpegs. If this follows through to the 1Dx there are going to be alot of unhappy people with $6500 less in their pocket.

3. RAW processing, I'm a bit amazed that none of this was sorted out prior to release, neither DPP or adobe are producing satisfactory results. The only way i can even see the detail i'm chasing is in DPP preview.

4. AF isnt as good as i was expecting in AI servo but I'm still playing with it (there are lots of settings to play with and test) so i'll have to reserve judgement on this but as for just turning it on and shooting with AI servo in standard mode the 1Dmk3 still eats it alive both in speed and accuracy :(
Perhaps I am doing something wrong maybe 7D users have some tips on getting the most from these new AF systems in AI servo.
