I discovered this last night, I'm very disappointed, I havent tried my kenko extension tubes yet, i'll try them later and see. I hope canon fix this with a firmware update

EOS Bodies / 5D2 vs 5D3 ISO100 around 50 test raws
« on: March 27, 2012, 07:03:59 PM »
So I spent about 8 hours doing this last night
3 tests, all ISO 100

test 1 - the AF micro adjust method using the canon utility
test 2 - shooting a test chart off a tripod
test 3 - handholding a shot to confirm

all tests using center point only
I also turned off the in camera lens correction stuff
anyway all the exif data is there

test 1 and 2 lit by 4 5500K constant lights & shoot through umbrellas
test 3 ambient tungsten light at night

lenses tested
16-35 f2.8 II
50mm 1.4
Sigma 85mm 1.4
100 f2.8L IS Macro
70-200 f2.8L IS II
300 f4L (i had to bump iso on test 3 up to 800 for these being hand held)

I didnt test the 24-105 because my wife was out and had the lens but i will do it and add it in

during this i discovered to my horror that the kenko DGX teleplus 1.4 teleconverter does not work on the 5Dmk3
nice of canon to kill that for me :(  :'(

Overall I feel the images are sharper however I think the 5Dmk2 still beats the 5Dmk3
I have not done any detailed manual focusing tests yet and havent done any more AI servo tests using the 70-200 yet either... maybe tonight.

Anyway happy downloading and comparing.

EOS Bodies / 5D mk3 - A few complaints
« on: March 25, 2012, 07:44:43 PM »
So i've been snapping away wildly all weekend with the 5Dmk3 and there are a couple of things that bug me
overall the build and handling are significant steps up but there is some silly stuff going on.

1 - The rate button, probably the single most useless button I have even seen on a camera EVER, which would be fine if you could assign it a usefull function instead such as a bracketing button like ever 1D has had since the 1Dmk1 remember that good ol 4MP kodak sensor? its nice to just hold a button down and scrollt he wheel bringing up the bracketed stops. having to go into the menu to enable bracketing on a PRO body is just plain lame. This could easily be fixed with a firmware update to enable assigning of more functions to that button
as for rate and protect the whole 2 features you can choose this button to perform, very underwhelming. As it is this button is a total bull tit.

2 - out of camera Jpeg files are horrible, accross the board there is far too much smearing going on they are well and truely overcooked, mushy and about as sharp as a bowling ball. I like to have medium jpg files writing to the SD card so i can just pop it out to give someone quick access to the pics without jumping through all the raw processing hoops. As it stands I'm really not going to give anyone these jpegs so i've turned it off all together until an update comes out.
This is particularly concerning because all the talk from the marketing machine talked up how all the improvements of blah blah stops is based on jpegs. If this follows through to the 1Dx there are going to be alot of unhappy people with $6500 less in their pocket.

3. RAW processing, I'm a bit amazed that none of this was sorted out prior to release, neither DPP or adobe are producing satisfactory results. The only way i can even see the detail i'm chasing is in DPP preview.

4. AF isnt as good as i was expecting in AI servo but I'm still playing with it (there are lots of settings to play with and test) so i'll have to reserve judgement on this but as for just turning it on and shooting with AI servo in standard mode the 1Dmk3 still eats it alive both in speed and accuracy :(
Perhaps I am doing something wrong maybe 7D users have some tips on getting the most from these new AF systems in AI servo.

I placed a preorder for one today they said should be shipping in about a month for anyone else keen on these

Software & Accessories / GEL Holder

I cant remember who recomended these in another thread but I got some and boy are they great
well worth it

so a big thanks to whoever recommended them :D

With the 5Dmk3 vs D800 being the most contraversial release in photographic history
I was just wondering when everyone thinks that things are going to return to normal around here?

Please this poll is just for fun, try to lighten up guys :D

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / IPAD 3 = Lame
« on: March 07, 2012, 06:33:52 PM »
I cant believe that they continue to refuse to put a USB host on the IPAD, all the android tablets are getting USB host functionality and apple in their infinte arrogance continue to cripple on of the biggest potentials of the platform. I can see this as the turning point where Android start to hand apple their Arses.

one of the main reasons I want to get a tablet is for traveling so i can take a hard drive and backup photos to the drive, with the new IPAD this is still impossible. I prefer the apple iOS interface though and really dont want to go to android...  :'(

Lenses / 600mm f4.5 FD
« on: February 24, 2012, 12:33:38 AM »
I went out last weekend and did some shooting with this and I have to say for a lens of it's age it is amazing
I would be posting pics with this thread but during the week my hard drive in my laptop seems to have taken a dump and killed lightroom I hope to get it fixed tonight or over the weekend then i can post up some pics.

but onto my question, wide open with bright background there is very heavy CA and obviously LR doesnt have a preset for this lens. so my question is how do you make you own lens profile to fix this stuff in LR (I'm quite new to LR so be gentle)

The other scary thing that happened was i nearly dropped my 1D when it detatched itself from the edmika adaptor, not quite sure how it happened as the camera seems to lock on fine and not come loose when i checked it out afterwards so I dont think its a fault of the adaptor. maybe it was the way i was carrying it with the lens strap over my shoulder and camera still attached i felt it come loose and caught it between my arm and body which was very lucky!
Anyone else had a lens and body detatch unexpectedly? its damn scary  :o

Lenses / 24-105 f2.8IS
« on: February 13, 2012, 07:13:07 PM »
Since canon refuse to make a 24-105 f2.8 IS I think sigma should step up to the plate and make one their recent build quality of the latest lenses has improved alot from the last generations they could do well in this space.

Site Information / Tutorial Section

I was thinking it would be cool to have a tutorial section where we could post tutorials of how to do certain things that people ask questions about, what do you think?

Lenses / sigma 20mm f1.8 EX
« on: February 06, 2012, 06:33:01 PM »
does anyone have one of these? i'm considering getting one since canon dont have anything in this territory
maybe this and a 35L might make a nice pair for fast wide angle stuff. usage would be 95% weddings

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / carrying around the 600 f4.5 FD
« on: February 04, 2012, 11:54:10 PM »
I'm looking for a bag / case to carry around the 600 lens for generally around town and also overseas
the old school canon case doesnt fit the lens with a plate on and something more durable would be good.
do they make individual padded bags for superteles? pelicans? any other ideas?

Lenses / f2 2x zooms
« on: January 24, 2012, 06:11:33 PM »
the rumour of the 55-110 f2 got me thinking about other ranges this tech would be awesome

I know since I love the 16-35 f2.8 on the APS-H giving an effective 20-48 its REALLY awesome for weddings because it is so sharp and has great colour

a 20-40mm f2L for use on full frame would be nirvana in that range. currently there isnt any other lens body combo that can get that I find 24mm on full frame a little tight sometimes for weddings and 20mm really opens things up, i could happily live with losing the 8mm on the long end for a stop faster apperture

what do you guys think? there is sooo much potential for awesome lenses that would just nail certain focal lengths in the f2 2x zoom category... 100-200 f2 anyone :D ;)
