Lighting / Re: looking for my 1st flash
« on: June 10, 2012, 07:38:28 PM »
Just an interesting little adaptation i tried out on the weekend was i wanted to see if a 3.5mm stereo splitter cable could be used to drive 2 flashes off 1 odin reciever via the PC sync port

and it works Obviously manual only however its a neat little trick if you are looking to drive multiple lights with 1 reciever, as long as your reciever has the 3.5mm output so you can use a 3.5mm to pc sync connector to the flashes,

I can see me using this for say driving 2 background flashes with one reciever for blowing out the background to white these need to be manual anyway so you can force enough power through ettl can be a bit flaky in this use. while the other flashes have their own recievers and operating in ettl

i would say its most likely cheaper to just buy another used one if that failed

extrapolating current theory the 1Dx kicks it's arse since the 1Dx has more megapixels.... :D

cant we all just accept the fact that canon cant make a camera to save their life and its impossible to take a good picture with anything not made by nikon?
that would eliminate the need for all these threads telling us thus  ::)
I dont know how canon users can continue to live with themselves using such substandard equipment

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Information.

i would be keen on seeing someone who gets one early do some shots with an IR filter to see if it suffers hot spotting as that would most likely be one of the main reasons i might pick one up, I kow reviews arent going to test that since its extremely specific

EOS Bodies / Re: Heavy camera...best strap?
« on: June 07, 2012, 10:20:18 PM »
i used a 1D with that lens for over a year and never had any issue with the BR strap connected to the camera tripod mount, some prefer to connect to the tripod foot but i like to remove the foot if not needed for more comfortable handheld shooting

Lenses / Re: Canon 17-40L lens for $500...good deal?
« on: June 07, 2012, 10:09:28 PM »
erm... plan on waiting for another $1000 on top of this to pick up the 16-35 II...  It's only 1 stop slower, and seriously, on wide open, unless you're shooting motor cross or something like that, when would the 1 stop really buy you a shot when a F4 couldn't?  Maybe weddings but even then 2.8 is kinda dicey...  It's a very good lens overall and you wont regret it... and when you got the extra grand built up, sell the 17-40 and buy the new one.  Keep it in good condition and it shouldn't depreciate too much.  Plus if you want/need WA, its better getting that now then going however long without a WA option.

its a bit more than that, the mk2 16-35 is sharper at f2.8 than the 17-40 is at f4
granted stopped down to f8 or something they are pretty similar but the sharp wide open aperture is what makes the 16-35 great for alot more than tripod shot landscapes.

if used soley for landscapes and shooting at narrow apertures i would say definately save some money and stick with the 17-40

however at $500 he cant lose on grabbing the 17-40 now and seeing if he has any need of the 16-35 down the track

i'm using LR4.1 and so far i'm pretty happy with it on the 5Dmk3

Lenses / Re: Looking for EF 24-105 f4L aftermarket replacement...
« on: June 07, 2012, 09:43:15 PM »
LOL  ???

So... there are no Tamron lenses (in the range I specified) or other manufacturers that make lenses that are very good in the price range of $400.00 ~ $600.00? Better than a "kit" lens but not exactly "L" class either?

I know I can get a used 24-105 for about $900.00 but that's not what I am looking for.

And I also know 24-105 is not all that "wide" on a APS-C camera BUT I also own FF. (sigh)

Any ideas from someone who owns a non-Canon medium wide angle zoom lens?

D

there is an old tamron 28-105 f2.8 but from all accounts its so soft wide open you may as well tape a marshmallow over a kit lens as that would be less soft :P

i'm not a fan of tamron gear

900 is steep for a used 24-105 they ususally go for 800 sometimes less

Canon General / Re: Crop factor for macros
« on: June 07, 2012, 08:13:32 PM »
Adding 1.4x TC adds a bunch of extra lens elements to the optic pathway, so I prefer to add (hollow) extension tubes to my 100L Macro lens if I want more magnfication.  The Pro-Optic extension tubes from Adorama are built well and cheap!

if you stop it down a few stops the IQ hit is barely noticable so for macro almost a non issue
even at f8 or f11 the DoF is very very thin in macro

also consider the sigma 30mm DC f1.4 instead of the 35mm f2

and if it mainly for video apparently the rokinon 85mm f1.4 is supposed to be outstanding value for money
(I've never used it though)

I think realistically comparing and 35mm sensor with a hassleblad or phase IQ digital back is like steve urkel
stepping into the ring with mike tyson

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D Mark II Refurbished
« on: June 07, 2012, 07:37:25 PM »
Just out of curiosity, typically how much is the markdown on a refurb? Does it come with factory warranty?

5D Mark II new is 2199, refurb 1759.  90 day Canon warranty.

They were gone in a few hours, so I did not get one early this morning.  I'll keep trying.

The CLP price is about $1415 plus sales tax and shipping.

pretty cheap

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS Rebel T4i/650 Touchscreen Information
« on: June 07, 2012, 07:36:22 PM »
The thing that worries me about a touch screen is that I am left eyed, what happens to it when I put the camera up to my eye and my nose presses against the rear screen?

Random exposure!
