Lenses / 300/2.8 L (IS MK1) or 400/2.8 L (non-IS)

I have squirreled away enough of my "allowance" over the past several months that I have approx $3000 to invest in a second hand "big white".
 
The question I have for the group is, based on my budget, which of these two lens gives me the most "bang for the buck"?
 
I will likely have the lens on a monopod (kids sports) or tripod (birds and such), so would the only benefit for IS be for framing the shots?
 
Thoughts?  Advice?

Canon General / eBay scam?

I do not use eBay often, but occasionally troll there for equipment "deals", so this really struck me as odd:
 
"EF 400mm 2.8L IS USM NEW IN BOX" with a starting price of $4.13.  In the body of the add the seller claims that the BUYITNOW price is $1,300.00 but I need to contact him at his gmail account.  curiosity prompted me to send an e-mail.  The response was even more bizarre:
 
"The buy it now price of this item is US $1,299.00, free shipping.We offer 30 days to return it if by any reason you are not satisfied with it.In order to start this transaction we need your ebay username,full name and shipping address...You will get an ebay invoice with the new buy it now price...The item will be shipped only to the payment address."
 
I may not be the brightest bulb on the tree, but this looks like a pretty amatuer scam to me.

Lenses / 400mm 2.8 L (non- IS)

I have an opportunity to buy a 400mm 2.8 L (non-IS) for $1500 and wanted to get some feedback from some more experienced users.  It has cosmetic signs that is has been around the block a few times, but pretty well cared for according tot the seller.

I will probably be using a monopod for sports use and tripod for birds, so the lack of IS does not deeply concern me, especially for the price difference.

Thoughts and advice, please.
