Lenses / Re: All round lenses
« on: December 19, 2011, 12:02:30 PM »
for the teleconverters, the aperature is not doubled, like the focal length is.  the aperature is decreased 1 stop for the 1.4X (f4.0 becomes f5.6) and 2 stops for the 2x (f4.0 becomes f8.0).  so, i guess it is doubled in this case.

another thing to consider about using TC's is that once the aperature goes beyond f5.6, the autofocus on (most/all) APS-C bodies will not function.  all manual focus.

I am fairly new to this forum (< 60 days) and did not understand the feature until recently.

I think it is a great feedback device for the site, but like everything, if abused or not used as intended, the outcome is worse that not having it there at all.

I have smited a few times when I felt that the post was mailcious or ill spirited.  The threads will inevitably wander off topic, from time to time, but that is also the nature of a forum and open exchange of ideas.  I subscribe to the philosophy that honest disagreement is healthy and should not be the sole reason to smite.

I have applauded numerous times when I felt that the post was valuable to me, for whatever reason (humor, insight, knoweledge, etc.) or contibuted to the discussion in a meaningful way.

Unfortunately, there are miserable people out there who have nothing better than to share  their misery with others.

Hopefully I will not get too many smites for these "feelings".

Dan.

Lenses / Re: Upgraded to a 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II

Looking for some advice/guidance here...

I just took advantage of the great pricing on the Mark II version (thanks for the great feedback on how much better the new lens is) and I am now questioning the practical need for my 100-400L lens.

With a 2x TC, I can get the same coverage and aperature and save a lot of room in my bag.

I realize from other posts that the IQ may be slightly less with the combo than the naitve 100-400, but I question myself on the thought of parting with the lens.

You all have much more experience than I do and look forward to some advice/guidance.

EOS Bodies / Re: Advice On 7D Purchase

Definitely keep he XSi as a back-up or second body with alternate lens combo.

Sold mine when I bought 7D and regret it.

Lenses / Re: Is the cost for canons teleconverters too high?

VALUE is what matters to most to me when I invest in my gear.

Are they higher priced than other TC's...obviously.  However, IMO, they also provide significantly higher results than other TC's.

Every decision is a trade off.  Make a decision based on the VALUE you personally are willing to settle for and go from there.

Great catch WildBill...just saw that myself.  No timeframe specified on the "special"...just ordered mine and will sell my mark I lens somewhere to offset the investment in this beauty of a lens!

@neuro - thanks for the insight.  Already stored the advice about the backpack in the hard case away for future travels.  Not sure how he Karma thing works but that was a +1 for me.

With the Pelican/Storm cases, is there a real difference between the foam and the padded dividers?  Or is it more of a preference issue?

Right now, I am using a combination of backpacks and individual lens cases for storage.

Silica packs aplenty!!!

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D Mark III - which lens will Canon put into the kit?
« on: November 24, 2011, 07:36:14 PM »
The official "Canon kit" will be the 24-105 combo purely for economics.  Dealer will always market other "kits" based on consumer needs.  IMO

Lenses / Re: 400mm 2.8 L (non- IS)
« on: November 10, 2011, 10:38:01 AM »
Thought I would share some closure to this thread...

Checked out the lens in person (well worth the 3 hour drive) and did not like what I saw.  Cosmetic appearance aside, the glass had a sheen/fog to it that did not look right and it "felt" gritty wehn focusing.  Did the recommended "shake test", but did not hear anything.

Did not need ot go beyond the physical inspection to know this was (probably) not going to turn out well in the end.

When I do buy my fist "great white" super tele, I want it to feel right.

Thanks for all of the great advise and helping me avoid a (potentially) costly lesson.

Thanks gang for the experienced feedback that I was lacking.

I will run this thru all of the field tests recommended, as well as, shooting a whole lot of frames for IQ.

Great info and advice about all of the "age related" issues (filters, USM, repairs, etc) that I have thought about but just did not know enough about.  Sort of spells out the risk-reward equation a bit more for me.

The extra weight of this lens means that's will need to invest in some more new toys to get the most out of it without feeling like I just went to the gym every time I break it out.

Great help, please give me more, if you have any.

I am always skeptical of offers that appear too good to be true.  Caveat emptor is a timeless phrase for a reason.
