Lenses / Re: How Much do you use your Canon EF 16-35mm L ??
« on: March 24, 2013, 09:21:26 AM »
A lot.
Just curious, what is the duration? ... I mean how long did it take you to make those 9000+ images with 16-35

The oldest are from 2006, but this catalogue mainy contains images from 2009 and forwards. If I filter since I got the 1D IV upon release it's 9726 with the 16-35, so 4 years-ish. I've still used the 24-70 and 70-200 a lot more (the latter makes sense though, since I mainly use it for sports)

Edit: since some previous posters deemed it necessary to attach pics to their answers I'll do the same:

What kind of sport?

Soccer? 400MM 2.8 + 70-200 2.8 (need two bodies really and probably 1D's)

I don't get why people claim you can't do anything but art at f 1.2. I've done several things solely at 1.2 that were published and were definitely not art but reportage and features and portraits and sports.

I love it when the fous is spot on and hate it too because it's so expensive and the build quality isn't exactly good.

16-35, why not get the best when you got such an expensive camera. Of course there are the zeiss options if you can do without AF.

EOS Bodies / Re: 46.1mp Canon DSLR Previewed at PhotoPlus 2012? [CR1]
« on: November 02, 2012, 03:14:26 AM »
Finally some relative credible rumors and 16 bit. I believe will be in a 5D3 Body (not 1D) aimed directly to studio work. At those specs will be at around $ 5K.
For what i do... regarding photography... 46 MP is a blessing from haven

I really, really hope this will be true

Can I ask you why you believe that?

EOS Bodies / Re: How often do you go through a body? Why do you upgrade?
« on: November 02, 2012, 03:12:28 AM »
I've never worn a body out. I've had the shutter replaced in a 1D II because of a nasty fall it took.

upgrade path goes something like this: D30, 10D, 1D, 1D II, 1D IV (1Ds III too but that's not that long ago).
I upgrade because the bodies no longer meet the requirements and are beginning to suffer seriously compared to the competition. This is mostly noise and resolution. I More or less follow the 1D's in upgrading, but seeing as I work in a studio 99% of the time I'm not getting a 1D X, I simply don't need the speed. I there's a high res 1Ds type coming I'm getting that.
I've never sold any of my gear, gave away the D30 and 10D and kept all the 1D bodies. They all still work except for the batteries.

Who cares. Most of the people buying these will never use them to their full potential. They'll shoot their grand kids at a school play and their dog and some family outings.

Or just outsource and have someone mask it in vietnam.

Canon General / Re: Canon Can't Even Make a Billion Dollars Anymore
« on: October 29, 2012, 07:13:20 AM »
The cause? A series Underwhelming products, Inflated Pricing, And a series of restrictions based on profit rather than R&D. IE: 1Dx F/8 focusing.
I doubt the 1D sales have ever had a large impact on canons revenue. They are like halo products.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D2 & 1D4 for 1DX?
« on: October 29, 2012, 07:09:31 AM »
Having the latest technology is great. But is there anything wrong with the 5D2 and 1D4? If not, might as well save up the money and wait for the next generation of bodies. The ones you have still hold their ground at this point in time.

This so much. I mean, do as you please, but it seems a little extreme. Rolling with 1Ds III and 1D IV and two 550D's for studio work that goes online (them little things weigh nothing and have a million shots between them and they cost nothing, also the files are small and faster to process).  But if it's just for a laugh you might as well get the best :)

I'd work seriously on your colours and colour balance. Also your photos are hazy. I personally do not like the lack of sharpness in them.
I think the compositions are fine, you just need to work on your post processing.

EOS Utility 2.10.2
Mac 10.6.8
MacMini2,1 (Core2 Duo)

Works like a champ :D

Also, using a hard drive (iomega external 2.5" fw400/fw800/usb2) to go from FW800 to FW400, a Macbook Pro (8,2 - 2011 thunderbolt i7) with 10.6.8  and the same EOS utility works

Let me know if you need additional info or such.

Wow! Thanks a lot! :)

That sounds great! :)

Are you sure your EOS 1Ds is mark II and not III? ;)

Informations on Canon support pages are terribly wrong then.

http://support-sg.canon-asia.com/contents/SG/EN/0200154902.html

They say that EOS 1Ds Mk II is not supported in EOS Utility 2.10.2 - here is the list of supported cameras:

5. Supported Models
EOS Kiss X5 / EOS REBEL T3i / EOS 600D, EOS Kiss X50 / EOS REBEL T3 / EOS 1100D, EOS 60D, EOS Kiss X4 / EOS REBEL T2i / EOS 550D, EOS 7D, EOS-1D Mark IV, EOS Kiss X3 / EOS REBEL T1i / EOS 500D, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 50D, EOS 40D, EOS Kiss F / EOS REBEL XS / EOS 1000D, EOS Kiss X2 / EOS REBEL XSi / EOS 450D, EOS-1Ds Mark III, EOS-1D Mark III

For EOS Utility 2.10.2 and OS compatibility they say:

System requirements

1. Supported OSes
Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6
Mac OS 10.5.6 users should update it to Mac OS 10.5.8 or later.

Caution

We have discovered a problem in the connection with cameras when using EOS Utility in Mac OS 10.6.8.
Please do not use EOS Utility if you use Mac OS 10.6.8.

Your test results will make life much easier. :)

Thanks again,

Aleksandar

.

Lightroom and Capture One should support tethered capture with the 1Ds II - also, in my opinion, they are much better pieces of software for this kind of work. Capture one has a  30 day trial but is expensive. Lightroom isn't-

Capture One Pro 6
Lightroom 4.2

I've only used DPP for a very short time. I find it extremely bad. Capture One has some pretty neat correction stuff too and they do actually bring in lenses and cameras for proper calibration of the software.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon EOS-M Begins Shipping

I actually really want one. But I do hate that they didn't make it EF default. A better/bigger sensor and I'd probably go for it.
