EOS Bodies / Re: C300 Dealers & Price Announced in the USA

One phrase: Dat Price.

Actually it wasn't the camera that made me cough, it was the $45k for the glass.

Canada / Re: B&H and Purolator
« on: January 17, 2012, 03:02:48 PM »
I've ordered from B&H a number of times and never had any problems with Purolator shipping to Canada.   If B&H used UPS or Fedex it would cost triple the amount of Purolator or more, and that doesn't include UPS' outrageous brokerage fees.

Take Adorama for example, they have a wide selection of gear and decent prices like B&H, but I don't order from them because they only offer UPS and FedEx.

I just looked at the shipping cost alone on a 1D Mark IV:

B&H - Purolator $35.43 (2-6 days)
Adorama - UPS Worldwide $71.90 (1 day)
Adorama - FedEx International Economy $100.40 (2-4 days)
Adorama - FedEx International Priority $124.40 (1-2 days)

When I order form B&H I usually get my packages in 3-4 days, which is fine for me.  Add to this B&H collects the brokerage fee which is usually about $6-7 versus UPS being $50 or more for anything of value.

I'm fortunate like wickidwombat that my better half is a photographer as well, so when we go on vacation we're both on the look out for great shots together. Although we try and avoid taking the same shots, but as everyone knows a little creativity can go a long way so the same scene looks completely different.  As for equipment purchases, she's pretty good, she laughs at me every time I'm browsing on B&H or reading reviews etc and asks me what I'm going to buy next.  I'm certainly not complaining as she gave me the green light to get the 1DX when my photography budget allows it this year.

Now, if it would just stop crashing every five minutes....
Interesting, what OS/specs are you running?
I'm on a MacBook Pro 17" with 8GB and a 1TB... and I haven't upgraded to Lion. Crashing risks increase significantly with presets or trying to "update" to LR4 a photo processed under the current Adobe Camera Raw.

I'm running a 17" Laptop with Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit, 16GB, and like the others I haven't had one crash; nor have I noticed any slow downs as yet.  Your MacBook is certainly no slouch, strange, I'm sure they'll get it figured out come final release.

Internal zoom would be nice, but that does not give you sharp images.

Can you or someone else elaborate on this?  I have the 70-200 2.8 IS II and it certainly takes sharp images with its internal zoom mechanism, what am I missing?

what photophreek means is that internal zoom has nothing whatsoever to do wtih sharp images on the 24-70. or your 70-200 for that matter, or any other lens.

Internal zoom is just... internal zoom. Not gonna be overly hard on the 24-70 to be honest, what with it extending as it zooms out anyway, when the hood is on its almost like an internal zoom, just without the internal. if you get where I'm going

Anyway, basically he's implying its the optics he's waiting to see - not this feature.

Thanks D. Sim, makes sense now.  While I'd prefer internal zoom, I care 100% more about IQ as well.

I hate hearing the continued reports of this lens not having IS.

Simply put this lens will be a must-have killer-app lens with it and just an incremental upgrade without.

How much would you be willing to pay for that?

If the 24-70 II were to be $1500 and the 24-70 II with IS were to be $2000, would you be ok with that?
Would everyone else?

If it had great IQ and similar IS performance, I'd put it on par in my mind with the 70-200 2.8 IS II, which I paid $2400 (pre-tax) for last summer, before the price drops around Christmas.

Interesting, what OS/specs are you running?  Is it crashing with video or pictures?  Just curious, because I've used it a fair bit since it was released and I haven't had one crash or lockup, but I haven't tried it for video yet.

CR - No keep em coming, well at least interesting ones like this.  I'm certainly looking to buy the II when it comes out, whether that's this spring or next spring.  Right now I don't need it in my collection, but I certainly do want it, so I can wait.  The internal zoom would be very nice, people always pay more attention / get distracted when they can see a lens zooming.

Get something that lasts yo.  Go with a Loka f-stop bag, that's what I will be getting.  Although it is a little pricey, shell + 1 ICU is $340 haha.  :'(

I have the big brother/sister to the F-Stop Loka, the Tilopa BC (Backcountry) and it's excellent.  I find it's very comfortable, durable, well designed and thought out for photographers.  You can get different sized ICU's depending on how much gear you want to carry on a given day, from small the XL.

I use Smugmug as well.  I like the layout and interface, but what I really like is that I can upload all the videos I want, which is great for showing friends/family videos of my kids.

Lenses / Re: Help choosing lenses for new 5D Mark II
« on: January 12, 2012, 12:02:15 PM »
Based on your comments, you seem to really like shooting landscapes, in addition to your daughter.  I'd look at the 16-35 2.8 II for landscapes, 50 1.4 for low-light indoors/portraits, and the 70-200 4.0 for some reach.  I have the 70-200 2.8 IS II, but from all the comments, reviews, and pictures I've seen of the f/4, it is a great lens with excellent IQ as well.  That collection of lenses should get you in around the three grand mark and within budget.  Then when you save up again, buy either the 24-70 2.8 or 24-105 4.0, or a couple of other primes if you prefer those.

As best I can make out thanks to Chromes' translate feature, the article doesn't draw any hard and fast conclusions.  It only presents a look at all the different types of 50mm lenses and examples of their vignetting, sharpness, colour rendering, bokeh, highlight bokeh, flare, and chromatic aberration.

Wow this topic has quickly gone over my head.  :o  Now, since I don't feel like going back and getting a B.Sc.; out of curiosity would one have a transilluminator at work, school, or home, and what is its commercial purpose? Forensics/medical research?
