That's what happens, if a company charges 1000 Euros more for a product variation with a modification that does not cost a lot and then simply adds an "E" behind the product name.

All it takes, is to paint or laser-etch that missing "E" behind the "D800" moniker on top of the camera ...

"DR is overrated, only poor photographers underexpose severely and then have to pull up shadows, Canon is best, Sony A7/R are just toys, show me real life imags where more DR really ic critical", ...
 yada yada yada  ;D

here you go! Just dig the image "Dali's dream" by amazing photogpraher Erez Marom:

I took the image with my Sony A7R and my Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II lens. I wanted as wide an angle as I could, so I shot at 16mm. The exposure time was 0.6 sec at ISO 100.

Before looking at the RAW images, let's mention the second important aspect. It's very easy to see that the images are strongly underexposed. The reason is that the specific sensor I used, that of the Sony A7R, has tremendous dynamic range, and holds an amazing amount of detail in the darker pixels. I could therefore expose 'to the left', maintaining good detail in the light areas, and brighten the shadows in post processing without compromising quality and without the use of HDR, which would be difficult to do with the hard contrast in this scene. Let's look at the RAW images. Yes, they are very dark. But based on my familiarity with the A7R sensor, I knew I'd be able to extract perfect color and detail from the dark areas. Praise Sony!

Really like the "magic finger trick" Erez Marom demonstrates here! THUMBS UP! :)

EOS-M / EOS M: 100% view with 1 click or tap - available or not?
« on: May 26, 2014, 06:39:41 AM »
Hi, can't find the information on the quick. Does anyone know, if there is a way to get 100% view playback on a EOS M quickly - i.e. with one click or one (double) tap ... somehow? Is it possible to custom-assign "100% view playback" to any button (e.g. to "Set" button)?

in playback mode ... 100% view of shot just taken, not the 5x/10x magnification loupe in shooting mode (I know that one).

Thanks!

Third Party Manufacturers / Leica T and Canon EOS M
« on: April 25, 2014, 09:58:02 AM »
Got no interest in the latest Leica T "lifestyle accessoire".
But I do find their starting lens lineup (T-mount) interesting, and the overlap with the EF-M "system":

Leica 18-56mm f/3.5-5.6 ..... Canon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6
Leica 23 mm f/2 ................... Canon 22 f/2.0
Leica 11-23mm f/3,5-4,5 ...... Canon 11-22 f/4.0-5.6
Leica 55-135 mm f/3,5-4,5 ... X

A compact EF-M 55-135 f/4.0 IS would be nice addition to the EOS-M "system" ... along with a EOS M3 with top-notch AF-system, EVF.

EOS-M / EF-M 11-22 / 4-5.6 IS STM - officially announced

Yes it's small. And it has IS. And list price is 399,- USD.
But it's not constant aperture f/4.
It is not as wide, not as bright but same weight and not a lot smaller than Sony NEX 10-18/4.0
* Canon 11-22mm F4-5.6 220 gram 61 x 58 mm (D)
* Sony NEX 10-18 F4 225 gram 70 x 63.5 mm (D)

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canon-efm-11-22-4-5p6-is-stm
"Canon is making grand claims for the 11-22mm's optical quality, and saying that its 12 element / 9 group design will offer significantly better image quality than the (already well-regarded) EF-S 10-22mm."

Wait and see ... IF true, it demonstrates that Canon can make and sell an excellent APS-C UWA-Zoom including  IS for a list price of € 399. And how grossly overpriced most of Canon's EF-S and EF lenses really are.

Lenses / 70-400/ f4.0-5.6 Zoom ... Canon, where are you?
« on: February 20, 2013, 04:09:27 AM »
while Canon is dragging its feet to replace the outdated 100-400/4.5-5.6, Sony goes ahead with a 70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM II lens announced today.
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/02/20/sony-lenses-50mmzeiss-70-400mm

The specs look good http://www.dpreview.com/products/sony/lenses/sony_70-400_4-5p6_gssmii/specification
Only slightly larger and heavier than the Canon 100-400, but faster at the short end - f/4.0. Same 77mm filter diameter. Rotary zoom design.

Canon ... WAKEUP CALL!

Lighting / Canon Speedlite 90EX (EOS-M) - master capable on all EOS bodies?
« on: November 10, 2012, 11:38:08 AM »
just found this post on German foto community http://www.fotocommunity.de/forum/d-slr-fortgeschritten/drahtloses-blitzen-mit-speedlite-fuer-alle-eos-359176 which claims the small external Canon speedlite 90EX which was released alongside the EOS-M seems to work as a wireless master flash [line of sight, optical] on all Canon EOS DSLRs. Mastering capabilities almost equal to the 580EX.
3 groups and best of all HSS mastering on top.

I cannot verify, sicne this speedlite is not available yet were I live and furthermore I have a 7D with pop-up master flash built in. Although that one will NOT do HSS mastering.

If confirmed, this would be a really interesting and cheap option for owners of EOS bodies without pop-up flash, namely 5D/2/3 and 1D/s/X.

To get a rough idea, whether & what market potential video-disabled Canon EOS DSLR's might have.

Thanks @all taking part in this poll!
