EOS Bodies / Canon EOS Rebel T4i [CR2]
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:26:29 PM »
The next Rebel I received some early specs about the coming update to the T3i. We’re told to expect it before CP+ in February.

The camera will probably be a new 24mp APS-C sensor and run a DIGIC 5 processor. The DIGIC 5+ won’t be used.

Expect some standard upgrades in ISO performance, HD movie modes and some creative control updates. The final spec list is not yet finalized.

It was mentioned that Canon may keep the new sensor for a 60D upgrade, with the next Rebel sticking at 18mp.

EOS Bodies / This and That

Canon Medium Format? A lot of discussion around the web about whether or not the 1D X is really a unification of the flagship line. A lot of people want that big megapixel studio camera.

[NL] posted an interesting quote from an interview with Canon Japan recently.

While we hear the voices, we want to see what the actual sales numbers will be for the 1D X and so determine how many 10,000s of customers we might be losing if we do not introduce a higher resolution camera and if the projected profitability of a higher resolution 24×36 mm format camera will justify development, marketing, and manufacturing investments , or if there is a sustainable market for the even greater costs of development, marketing, and manufacturing medium format cameras and lenses – an area where we have no internal expertise.

A few people I have spoken to desire a flagship camera that is high megapixel. They would like performance beyond what could be had for $2500 or so in a 5D Mark III.

I haven’t heard of a medium format prototype within Canon, however I have heard in the past that Canon has considered purchasing a medium format company. I’ve personally never understood why they would, they are more than capable of entering the market themselves.

Canon Mirrorless [CR1] Will Canon target the niche market with any sort of mirrorless camera in the future? That’s what one person told me this week. There’s no interest in the company in releasing an NEX or Nikon 1 kind of mirrorless.

B&H Deal of the day B&H has the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II in stock and selling for $2074 until January 7, 2012.

EOS Bodies / Re: *UPDATE* How to Lose $2400 in 24 Seconds
« on: December 01, 2011, 05:39:49 PM »
yeah, this story makes no sense.  If I drop my camera "by mistake" while climbing an ancient Mayan ruin, will B&H hook me up with a free replacement?

Probably marketing... the video went pretty viral.

I had nothing to do with the decision of either party. :)

*UPDATE* B&H Replaces The Camera for free. It turns out that B&H Photo sent Kurtis a new camera on the house.

Sorry Kurtis I don’t like to be entertained by other peoples mishaps, however I think this is a public service announcement in some ways.

There is a nice lead up to the death of a 5D Mark II. Mother nature is fun.

I emailed you with a password reset.

I think the issue is mail servers, I can reset my password without issue. It seems to only be select people that have the issue. I will look into it a bit more though.

Thanks

I've bought and sold the 17-40 f/4L 3 times.... I wish I had just kept the first one.

EOS Bodies / Re: How often do you go through a body? Why do you upgrade?
« on: November 29, 2011, 11:57:09 PM »
I used to be an upgrade freak. I own a lot of cameras because of Lens Rentals Canada.

However, personally. The 5D Mark II and Leica M9 will be it. I'd like another 2-3 years out of the 5D2. Though I'll probably go 5D3 whenever it hits.

The M9? It'd be good enough for another 5 at least.

I like beating the heck out of a camera for a long time. I'd honestly be happy still using a 40D, that was/is a fantastic camera.

Does [CR1] mean "very-implausible information", or just "wishlist" these days  :P  ::)

It means I don't know who said it, and I sourced the first place it appeared on the web. :)

EOS Bodies / 5D Mark III Information [CR1]
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:59:28 PM »
5D Mark III Information? It’s mentioned that a 5D Mark III will be aimed at “cleaning up” the DSLR video market. It will complement the 1 series video DSLR mentioned at the recent Hollywood Cinema EOS presentation.

The camera will be no more than 18mp. It was mentioned not to expect a big mp camera from Canon in the immediate future.

EOS Bodies / Re: Best "first buy" Gradient Filter?
« on: November 29, 2011, 08:55:36 PM »
Heya

There's 3 levels of Grad NDs

Level 1: Cokin (They have a colour shift)

Level 2: Heliopan (Very good, slight shift)

Level 3: Singh-Ray & Lee. I prefer Singh-ray for no good reason.

a 2 stop soft and 3 stop hard are what I'd recommend.

I hand hold grad filters, so I have no recommendation for holders. The Lee is regarded as the best, but the Cokin is just fine too.

Cheers

EOS Bodies / “Revealing” Canon C300 Test Video
« on: November 29, 2011, 05:07:12 PM »
More C300 eye candy and praise Jon Yi has provided a fantastic “test” video from the new Canon EOS C300. His conclusion, “C300 = awesome”.

There’s some great info about ISO performance and workflow. A worthwhile watch.

There’s a little bit of language and “skin” in the video, so if you’re easily offended, don’t press ‘play’.

From Jon Yi

In early Fall 2011, I shot some footage with a pre-production model of the Canon EOS C300 for one week in NYC. I created an article and a video for Canon based on my experiences with the camera. The video is meant to poke fun at most camera test videos I’ve seen over the years. Canon, not thrilled with my sense of humor, does not credit or condone this video, but I think it shows a lot of the camera’s strengths.

You can read my full article about the EOS C300 here:learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2011/c300_for_cinematographers.shtml

I believe that Canon made a beautiful camera that is sensible, reliable and portable in a way that I’ve always dreamed a camera could be. It prioritizes great skin tone and has higher ISO sensitivity than any other camera out there.

I know there’s nothing I can say to change the minds of the RED fan club. For the rest of the skeptics, I think once you get your hands on it you’ll understand how great this camera really is. Please buy this camera in January and go film some good skin tones in the dark. You’ll love it.

Thanks go out to all my friends for helping me with this.

Visit Planet5D & Jon Yi for more on the video.

Canon General / The Future of the Canon Speedlite [CR1] & More
« on: November 29, 2011, 11:50:49 AM »
3 New Speedlites? Received a bit of a random email saying Canon is currently testing 3 separate Speedlite models. 430 and a 580 replacement, as well as an all new flash line.

A replacement of the ST-E2 was also mentioned, though it wasn’t said whether or not it would be radio based..

1 new Macro flash is also a possibility, there is a small stature Macro flash being tested I’m told. It may be launched with a new EF-S macro lens.

LensRentals.com used gear LR.com has added more used Canon gear for sale, including a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II.

Contest Update I am still sorting through photos. Getting them down to 10 in each category is taking time. Ones opinion of an image really can change depending on your own personal mood.

The finalists are coming very soon.

EOS Bodies / Canon Rebel 1000D Lost at Sea
« on: November 27, 2011, 09:59:11 PM »
The tale of a camera lost at sea. The above Canon EOS 1000D was lost at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of British Columbia, Canada for over a year.

Turns out it was found by a diver named Markus Thompson, who brought it back to the top. He discovered the SD card still worked and he was able to view the photos.

What now? Well Markus took to Google+ and ended up finding the owner of the camera!

Thompson took to Google+, posting the story and a few identifying details he was able to dig up from the photos. Within a day, the hive mind was able to track down and contact the owner, a firefighter in British Columbia. We’re not saying you should be thankful for Google+, but the actual people who use it sure seem like good folks.

Lenses / New Lens on December 6, 2011? [CR1]
« on: November 27, 2011, 06:37:46 PM »

New Lens(es)? Are we getting a goodie before Christmas?

Received an email today saying Canon may announce a new lens on or around December 6, 2011.

This could just be in retaliation of the suspected Nikon announcements on November 30, 2011. No mention of what lens, which lowers the possibility in my eyes.

I can only think of one time a lens was announced and I had heard absolutely nothing about it, and that was the 55-250 II.

EOS Bodies / Canon Cinema EOS Interview
« on: November 27, 2011, 06:31:28 PM »
From Amateur Photographer Amateur Photographer (via NL) sat down with Peter Yabsley, a business development manager from Canon Europe, to talk about Cinema EOS.

An excerpt

AP: Will the EOS and EOS cinema departments be working quite closely together now?

MB: Since the 5D there’s been a process of working together, interconnecting working and sharing technologies and it will be beneficial throughout the range. You may not see it now but broadcast is helping EOS, EOS is helping cinema and so forth. We’re seeing it now it the EOS 1DX, adding timecode to video for instance – the video guys helped show the stills guys how timecode operates and there’s more than just the one option on there.
