EOS Bodies / A Week in Rumors
« on: September 11, 2011, 11:25:07 AM »
Lots came in I have received a lot of small rumors throughout the week. There’s till life out there, even if there isn’t anything overly exciting.

I’ll break them down.

DIGIC V Apparently DIGIC V will be powering the next Canon DSLRs. We all expect better noise reduction and processing speed, however there is also a “brand new feature”. I’m still waiting to find out what that is.

PowerShot G12 Replacement There will be no G12 replacement in 2011.

2011 DSLR? Most information I am receiving now seems to suggest there will be no DSLR announcement in 2011. There are definitely a lot of prototype bodies out there, we just won’t be hearing about them until 2012.

It was suggested this was to make sure Canon could meet the production demands that the Christmas and holiday seasons require.

It was also flatly said that “Canon will announce a new camera when it’s done, and not a minute before”. Canon has no desire to announce a camera and it not be available for 2-3 months.

Canon Mirrorless The R&D is ongoing. There is no prototype cameras out to photographers though.

EF 24-70 f/2.8L II Apparently in the October 2011 Popular Photography issue, they wrote a reference to an EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS II. I haven’t seen the magazine, but generally dismiss this sort of thing as a typo. I’ve never received solid info that the version II would have IS.

*UPDATE* As pointed out by a reader, any 24-70 with IS wouldn’t be designated with a “II”. I hate missing the obvious. :)

PowerShot Cameras / PowerShots Next Week [CR2-CR3]
« on: September 10, 2011, 07:59:28 AM »
Next announcements Next Tuesday we will be seeing some more Canon announcements. Alas, no DSLRs will be announced. We’re reminding the folks of previous information.

PowerShot SX40 HS [CR3] 12mp 35x Zoom HD Video

The second camera to be announced isn’t quite as definite, we’re pretty sure it’s an S95 replacement.

PowerShot S100 (tentative name) [CR2] 12mp 5X Zoom

G13? Again, there has been nothing about a G13, so it looks like the G12 will remain a current product for the time being. Could this be a sign the series is taking a turn? Here’s hoping.

Another theory is the “S100″ rumors we’re hearing are actually for a G13 and the “S” series isn’t getting an upgrade.

EOS Bodies / Canon Tempting Fate Being "Mirrored"?

Sony, Panasonic & Olympus knocking at the door

Bloomberg has written an interesting article the higher ups at Canon have certainly taken notice of. That being their dropping marketshare in Japan along with Nikon to the mirrorless segment.

I haven’t had a problem with Canon being last to the game. I don’t personally like any of the true mirrorless options (you don’t count M9), none of them feel like cameras to me. Lots of people do though, and that’s cool. I was eager to see what Nikon came up with, though it doesn’t look too exciting to me.

I’ve always thought if Canon was going to get into it, they’d go all in. We’d see 3 mirrorless camera bodies, one high end mirrorless, a Canon M9 if you will (not a rangefinder). A prosumer middle camera body for the 5D user who wants IQ and portability, and then an entry level variant for the people that want more than a “G”.

I could be dreaming, or wishing. I’d just like to think Canon would be the company that did it right.

From Bloomberg

Canon Inc. and Nikon Corp. the world’s two biggest makers of high-end cameras, may be missing out on the industry’s biggest technology shift since film rolls became obsolete.

The two Tokyo-based companies use mirrors in all cameras with interchangeable lenses, a technique Sony Corp. (6758) is shifting away from. As a result, Canon and Nikon’s combined share of the Japanese market has fallen by 35 percent, while Sony’s share has doubled, according to estimates at research firm BCN Inc.

EOS Bodies / More EF & PL Video Rumors Surface
« on: September 05, 2011, 09:28:39 AM »
EF & PL Mount Cameras I’ve received more contact that EF and PL mount camcorders are coming from Canon over the next 6 months or so. We’d see the EF mount camera most likely before the end of 2011 and the higher end PL mount version sometime before Q2 in 2012.

The source said the EF mount camera looks to be “affordable” and would be extremely popular, the PL mount camera would be a higher end professional solution.

No mention of sensor size or specs on either camera. That is usually a good sign this far ahead of any sort of announcement.

Take any rumor of an EF mount video camera with a large grain of salt. This is a product that does not exist yet and has a potential to be a wishlist product.

EOS Bodies / 1Ds Mark IV & 5D Mark III
« on: September 05, 2011, 09:21:37 AM »
Back and forth Everyone wants to know when Canon will announce their next camera bodies. I’m wondering the same thing. Daily, I am getting contradictory information. What this makes me believe is Canon doesn’t yet have an announcement date decided. The Japan disaster has had a deep and lasting effect on camera body production.

I’ve heard as early as October for a new DLSLR and as late as February. Some people are saying the 5D Mark III will be before the 1Ds Mark IV and others are saying it the other way around.

There is nothing solid I can pass on right now in regards to DSLRs, I just wanted to clear that up.

The lens is sharp, harsh bokeh. The vignette is pleasing. It sure does flare though! I'll post more stuff near the end of the weekend.

Interesting and fun article, but one question: Has the nobody ever taken a picture with one of thee adapted lenses? :o How can compose an article like that and not include a few photos shot through these lenses adapted to modern bodies?

I'm shooting with the adapted 55 f/1.2 this weekend on a 5D2, I'll post some photos.

PowerShot Cameras / *UPDATE* Announcement Dates [CR2]
« on: September 02, 2011, 08:45:04 AM »
*UPDATE* [CR3] was a typo, it should be [CR2]. Sorry about that. I have heard from others places we’ll be seeing new PowerShots around the 15th of September.

When? The first announcement date I have received is September 15, 2011. There are events planned in Shanghai, China on September 16, 2011.

By the looks of it, it’ll be compacts (PowerShot) only.

When else? September 27 should be another announcement date. There will be events on September 28 showing off new Canon printing solutions. Invites are out for various European countries.

DSLR? All is quiet on the DSLR front.

EOS Bodies / New EF Mount Video Camera in October? [CR1]
« on: September 01, 2011, 08:06:25 AM »
Video camera rumors are floating around. I have now heard from two different people that a new Canon video camera will be coming down the pipe soon.

They differ in the capability of the camera, below is the different information.

Camera Rumor 1 - Video style body - APS-C Sensor - EF Mount

Camera Rumor 2 - Video style body - PL & another mount (Not EF). - APS-C Sensor

I was also told there would be a “group” of October announcements from Canon.

Canon General / EF 300 & 400 f/2.8L IS II in Stock at B&H *UPDATE*
« on: August 31, 2011, 06:23:28 PM »

Update

Both lenses are now out of stock at B&H.

Woooo!

B&H has notified me that they now have the new highly anticipated 300 f/2.8L IS II and 400 f/2.8L IS II in stock. They note they are both in limited quantity.

Buy the EF 300 f/2.8L IS II here $7299

Buy the EF 400 f/2.8L IS II here $11499

Are they any good?

Both will probably be slightly better than the 18-55 pre IS.

EF 400 f/2.8L IS II Unboxing

I don’t normally post unboxings for a few reasons. However, things are slow and there are new cases and lens caps to show off. So here is the 400 f/2.8L IS II coming into someones life.

When will Canon Rumors have them?

I have the 300 f/2.8L IS II on order, however I don’t think the 400 is in the near future for me. I’ll have one in the spring.

Lenses / New Article: Adapting your FD or FL lenses to EF/EOS
« on: August 31, 2011, 12:29:14 PM »
Ever wondered how? We’re featuring an article here by the owner of EdMika adaptors. They’re a Canadian based duo that engineers and makes adaptors for the Canon FL 55 f/1.2 lens, and an adaptor for various other Canon FD lenses.

Why would you do this?

Lots of people are buying Zeiss and other manual focus lenses at a pretty handsome price, while there is great old Canon glass that is begging to be used again!

The biggest money saver would adapting the big Canon supertelephoto FD lenses, does a very sharp 600 f/4.5 for $1500 sound appealing?

The new EF lenses are astounding, but that comes with a price.

Please read the article Jakub from EdMika wrote about the process and technology behind what appears to be a simple piece of metal.

EOS Bodies / 1Ds Mark IV & 5D Mark II Merry-Go-Round
« on: August 25, 2011, 02:32:27 PM »

Which comes first………

The 1ds Mark IV or 5D Mark III?

Some people [NL] are being told the 1Ds Mark IV will arrive before the 5D Mark III based on known sources. I’ve been told the opposite by known sources. It’s still too early to say for sure it seems.

Lenses

As mentioned above, a few “interesting” lenses would be arriving with the 1Ds4/5d3. I’ve heard similar things in the last month or so.

I’ve been told there will be a “massively popular” lens as well as 2 more specialized lenses before the end of 2012.

Lens rumors have always been harder to nail down, as I think manufacturing plays a big roll in deciding when a lens can be announced and released.

For now, sit tight. The next announcement is going to be for a couple more PowerShots, then the good stuff.

EOS Bodies / 5D Mark III & The Rest [CR2]
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:10:27 AM »
The Next DSLR? I’m told we’ll be seeing the 5D Mark III announced in October, with delivery shortly there after. I was not given any specs, which is probably a good sign.

We said originally, that the 5D Mark III would come before a 1Ds Mark IV or similar camera. Things appear to have come full circle and negate a lot of what I’ve been told this fall in regards to the 5D3.

Next Announcement Date? We have the middle of September, possibly September 13-September 15 timeframe for a few more PowerShots. Some folks don’t read the site all that well and have posted other dates quoting us.

We should see the S95 & SX30 successors.

G13? We have heard absolutely nothing about a new G camera. It’s genrally on a 1 year product cycle, which would make it due for replacement any day now.
