EOS Bodies / Re: 5D Mark III Specs [CR1]
« on: November 02, 2010, 08:45:03 AM »
I'm assuming the "2800 full megapixels" is a mis-translation, or else we can stop right here and throw this one out the window

I updated that. I like to give exact quotes, but I'll just assume 28mp was intended.

Lenses / *UPDATE* Official Bad News - Lenses Delayed.
« on: November 01, 2010, 04:58:37 AM »

*UPDATE*

Apparently both of the new teleconverters are delayed as well.

EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM lenses delayed

Following the announcement of the new EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM, on 26th August 2010, Canon has now delayed the introduction of these lenses due to some adjustments in the manufacturing process. These lenses are now due to be released in March 2011.

Canon would like to apologise to any customers who will be inconvenienced by these delays.

EOS Bodies / New “Kit Lens” for 5D Mark III? [CR1]
« on: October 28, 2010, 03:42:33 PM »
5D Mark III Kit Lens Update? Received a tip that the 5D Mark III would get an updated “kit” lens.  Whether or not it’s a direct replacement to the 24-105 f/4L IS is unknown.

The likelihood is good that an updated kit lens could appear with the 5D Mark III. If Canon is upping the megapixel amount as much as we think they will, more resolving power is definitely needed.

Other Rumors? Nothing of major note to mention at this time. Some small bits are still showing up, but nothing beyond the obvious.

If I piece together all I’ve read and been told, there will be 3 full frame cameras coming in 2011. There is nothing concrete about what that 3rd one would be. We know the other 2 (1Ds4 & 5D3).

The fabled 3D perhaps?

It was pointed out the name “3D” could be confusing from a marketing standpoint. Could you really call something “3D” if it doesn’t actually do 3D? There’s a big trend in the electronics world for 3D and it’s only going to grow exponentially in 2011.

I’m still not convinced there’s room for 2 full frame cameras between the 7D and 1D Mark IV. Unless your plan is to merge the 1D line in time.

Price Watch Pages The price watch pages here at CR have been fixed. They weren’t updating. Sorry about that.

Lenses / New Lens Availability & More
« on: October 26, 2010, 06:21:17 AM »
70-300 f/4-5.6L IS At NL, they’ve been told not to expect it until the end of December in Sweden. It doesn’t look like it’ll be under most trees for the holiday season in North America.

8-15 f/4L Fisheye There’s been nothing to contradict the original release date of January 2011.

300 f/2.8L IS II & 400 f/2.8L IS II These two lenses will also be available in 2011.

New Camera Image? Over at PR there’s an image of a Canon DSLR body. There is a claim it could be a new Canon body.

As far as I know you cannot use a branded camera strap with a prototype body. I don’t think anyone would be shocked to know new pro bodies are being tested.

EOS Bodies / 1D Mark IV Firmware Coming Soon?
« on: October 25, 2010, 03:42:32 AM »

New firmware for the sports flagship?

I received word that we can expect a firmware update for the 1D Mark IV sometime in November. It’s said to have general bug fixes and will improve autofocus performance in some situations.

It was also noted that there would be “no significant features added”.

EOS Bodies / New "High End" Camera Announcement in March..... [CR1]
« on: October 24, 2010, 10:28:10 PM »

…. and not a 1Ds update.

The contact mentioned an announcement for a new high end Canon camera would be coming in March. It will NOT be a 1Ds Mark IV by the sounds of it. The general consensus is it will be a 5D Mark II replacement or bigger brother.

The 5D Mark II turns 3 at the end of the summer 2011, there are a few bits of information that put a replacement before its 3rd birthday.

A few dealers have mentioned a significant slowdown in 5D Mark II sales. The same dealers said the D700 wasn’t selling well anymore either.

I will say pinning down exact announcement dates this far in advance is difficult.

EOS Bodies / 5D Mark II Firmware 2.0.8
« on: October 19, 2010, 08:26:38 AM »
This firmware update (Version 2.0.8) incorporates the following changes and fixes.

  • Fixes a phenomenon in which movies are not taken at the shooting mode registered in the user’s settings if a shooting mode Aperture priority (or Shutter priority) is registered in any of the camera’s user settings (C1, C2, C3) and the user attempts to shoot a movie.
  • Fixes a phenomenon in which the shutter will not release when pressing the shutter button when the auto power off function is set to “on”.
  • Fixes a phenomenon in which overexposure occurs when shooting a Live View shooting simulation with the ISO speed set to L.
  • Fixes a phenomenon in which the settings of the Speedlite transmitter ST-E2 revert to the default settings when both the camera and the ST-E2 are set to auto power off.
  • Fixes a phenomenon in which the Macro Ring Lite (MR-14EX, MT-24EX) and slave flash do not sync while shooting wirelessly.

EOS Bodies / *UPDATE* 1Ds Mark IV Feature
« on: October 18, 2010, 07:21:12 PM »
Update A contributor has had this to say about the AA filter rumor and that it’s unlikely Canon will remove it from the 1Ds Mark IV.

MF camera makers deleted AA filters primarily for reasons of cost, not image quality, as aliasing is very destructive. Yes, they do use software to “correct” this, but it does a terrible job. It’s an insoluble problem, because it’s a “many to one” issue for the software.

Large AA filters are very expensive to manufacture, particularly at MF quantities. A Pentax representative even stated flat out that cost was the sole reason they didn’t include one in the 645D.

Canon will delete the AA filter once resolutions get high enough that diffraction is the limiting factor.

Thanks Steve

From NL

The ‘next 1Ds’ was delayed for some bigger jumps in technology and to hold it’s ‘top camera’ spot for longer. DigicV will allow for handling of binning, better video and ‘software removal’ of the need for an AA filter at 35+MP. The camera might not ship until later next year.

I asked around to find out if software could correct what the lack of an AA filter could bring about. Most notably; moire. The general consensous was it was possible. A regular contributor pointed out medium format cameras do not have an AA filter and combat moire in software (thanks Kurtis).

For those that don’t know, the lack of an AA filter would produce sharper images right at the sensor. However, Canon has a lot of lenses that would need to be upgraded to resolve a sharper 35+ mp sensor.

Lenses / *UPDATE* Zeiss ZE Roadmap for 2011 [CR2]
« on: October 18, 2010, 07:16:12 PM »
Update I’m told there will be a 15mm f/2.8 lens from Zeiss in 2011.

Upcoming Zeiss releases for Canon Cameras over the next year

  1. 35/1.4 – available from December
  2. New version of the 25/2.8 (f-ratio suspect) – available in May. ZE will be the first version released.
  3. One lens shorter than 18mm – perhaps a 15/4
  4. Two lenses longer than 100 mm.

Thanks Bruce

Lenses / Sigma 85 f/1.4 EX DG Available Soon
« on: October 14, 2010, 10:04:10 PM »

Ronkonkoma, NY, Oct. 14, 2010 – Sigma Corporation of America (www.sigmaphoto.com), a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, is pleased to announce that the company’s 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM lens is now available for purchase in the United States for the MSRP of $1,400 and the estimated street price of $899.

This large aperture, medium telephoto lens is optimized for use with full-frame, DSLR cameras and is especially ideal for portrait and low light photography. When used on digital cameras with an APS-C size image sensor, it effectively becomes a 127.5mm F1.4 lens.

“This lens is an excellent addition to our prime lens line-up and is a great performer for a variety of photographers. For the sports or photojournalist photographer, the Hyper Sonic Motor will keep up with fast-paced action sequences; the 1.4 maximum aperture provides the ability to work at high shutter speeds under low existing light conditions,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, general manager of Sigma Corporation of America. “That same high-speed aperture is great for a portrait photographer who is looking to isolate details in their subject, with a pleasant, out-of-focus background. One-touch, full-time manual focus is perfect for the critical, professional photographer.”

The 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM also contains one Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element and a glass mold element to offer excellent correction for all types of aberrations and to ensure superior optical performance. This lens is equipped with a rear focus system that minimizes fluctuation of aberration caused by focusing.

The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghost, even in backlight photography. The lens has a round, nine-blade diaphragm, which creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus images, and comes with a petal-type hood to block out extraneous light. For digital cameras with an APS-C size image sensor, Sigma provides a dedicated hood adapter to expand the length of the lens hood and to block out extraneous light more effectively.

CR’s Take

I’m a big fan of the Sigma 50 f/1.4. I cannot wait to try the 85 out, this is definitely a lens and focal length I will review.

EOS Bodies / 5D Mark II Replacement
« on: October 14, 2010, 08:57:22 PM »

Time to address the questions

I am getting a ton of questions regarding the 5D Mark II and how much longer it’s going to be a current camera. While I obviously have nothing definitive, there are been a few pieces of information come my way in regards to a Canon roadmap.

5D Mark III

  • A Q2/Q3 announcement in 2011, this is not yet decided within Canon.

  • Big megapixel boost, 28mp +

  • Continue to build on EOSHD and supreme image quality.

  • A variant of the 7D AF system.

  • I can’t see them not calling it 5D Mark III, the 5D name carries a lot of weight.

  • Expect it to be in the same $2699 range the 5D Mark II was at launch.

  • Obvious ergonomic upgrades.

I get asked a lot if people are safe to buy a 5D Mark II now. The answer is “yes”, it’s a great camera today and it’ll still be a great camera in a year.

There is not a lot of urgency for Canon & Nikon to launch new higher end cameras in the current economic climate. Things look to improve in 2011. The 5D Mark II also still sells extremely well.

Lenses / Canon EF 8-15 f/4L Sample Videos
« on: October 13, 2010, 08:59:19 PM »

A lot of people are waiting for this lens.

Check out a video made with the upcoming EF 8-15 f/4L Fisheye lens. It’s going to be a very fun lens to use. They used a 5D Mark II and 7D to make the film.

All signs point to us not being able to buy this lens until January.
