Hey guys, what laptop would you buy for photo editing? Thx for the help :)

Mac Book Pro 15"
Asus N55SF 15"
or something else?

Since you don't seem to be on a very tight budget you may also want to look at the Sony Z series laptop which is a nicely designed and reasonably powerful laptop by itself but what makes it an excellent choice for photo editing is the docking station that contains an external GPU.

I haven't tested it yet but it's most likely going to be my next laptop (combo) since I have been very satisfied with Sony's laptops over the past 5 years...

I changed my mind and got a MBP instead... ;-)

I vote for the 16-35 f/2.8II - Have taken thousands of great shots with it.
You should be able to find a used copy for around USD 1,000.

EOS Bodies / Re: Locking Mode Dial.

When upgrading to 1D series I fell in love with the mode buttons. However, a lock for the mode dial would be a major improvement.

Since this is a wishlist - built in battery grip would be great!

How about a lock for the mode dial?  I'm always inadvertently changes modes when I change lenses, etc.

I would even propose to substitute the mode dial by a quick selection button (as in 1D4).

Lenses / Re: two new lenses vs 5D3 Kit
« on: March 03, 2012, 12:40:25 AM »
I have been struggling for a few months with my purchase decisions on new lens and body.
I currently own 30D and 50mm 1.4 prime, and wanted to get additional lens and new body.
With the 5D3 full spec and pricing tag, I am considering the following two options:

  • Get 5D3 with 24-105 kit
  • Wait on body and get 24mm 1.4 & 70-200 2.8 II

I have immediate need to take indoor low light group picture as well as indoor telescope pictures, and my 50mm prime is either too limiting or too short.
One additional question: if I go with the second option, will I be able to take advantage of the two L lenses on my 30D camera? (beside the crop factor I am aware of?)

Thank you in advance for your advise.

Go for the kit!

Software & Accessories / Re: recommend me a backpack

I can only recommend the Gura Gear Kiboko 22L... it'll be the last backpack you buy, unless you get a 600 or 800.. then you'll need a Kiboko 30L

Gura gear must really pay extraordinary high amounts of money for every click leading from canonrumors to their website - Canon Guy isn't missing a single chance to advertise. :D

Can anyone recommend a backback that'll fit a 1D4 + 300mm 2.8 attached?

1D4 with 400 F2.8L attached fits into my LowePro ProTrekker 400AW, so should be no problem with the 300 2.8L... :)

Since I got spoiled with the electronic level on my 7D I really miss it on my 1D4...

I have got 3 Lowepro camera bags - they're all very robust and of high quality. I can recommend the brand in general but cannot give you specific advice as to which of the 2 bags you mentioned would suit your needs better.

Lenses / Re: What happened to the DO lenses?
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:23:19 AM »
Well, at least the 400 F4 DO has its justified place in the Canon lens set-up being a lightweight super telephoto lens. I tried it once at my local Canon dealer and was amazed how light it is compared to the 400 F2.8L which obviously is a stop faster. For a good price I would consider getting a used copy of the 400 F4 DO as a travel super tele well knowing that the IQ and contrast could not put up with its big L brother...

Software & Accessories / Re: Tripod weight rating advice
« on: February 26, 2012, 05:03:13 PM »
Tripods and heads have weight ratings.  Are these ratings set by the material strength directly?  What type of knockdown factor is required to ensure stability?

I am using a Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 carbon fiber tripod which according to its specs supports up to 8kg of load. However I frequently 'overload' it when using a Manfrotto 393 head (1.6kg) + 1d4 (1.2kg w/o battery) + 400 2.8L (6.1kg) + teleconverter (0.3kg) and did not notice any instability with the center column extended, even without a counterweight.

Not sure if all tripods could be overloaded without a negative impact on stability though...
