Canon EF Prime Lenses / Re: Canon EF135mm f/2L USM
« on: January 13, 2012, 08:56:36 AM »
Next week, I am shooting a VB tourney for 2 days, and I am renting a 1D Mark IV as a trial...trying to decide 1D MIV vs 1DX.....

You wont want to hand back the 1D4 ...

Wow you are not kidding - just started last PM for practice.  The ISO range difference is unbelievable c/w 7D. Indoor, no flash, no problem.
Took a walk in my neighborhood last night before a snowfall (so no contrast on the ground), with only moonlight, and got interesting / usable handheld shots at 1/15 and 1/30.

Shot indoor volleyball then indoor soccer (my kids are very busy), and paired the 135 with both the 7D and the ID IV - didn't have time to process yet but first glance I liked what the viewfinder shows, but my wife is not gonna be happy (neither is LENSRENTAL) - I may not return it  :)

I will shoot similar shots this weekend with the 135 using both bodies for a real-life comparison and post next week.

I was "working" from the office computer (Chrome), now I'll upload it from Safari (home)

On my screen, it looks fine, did we solve the dilemma or do I need to post-process in PS differently?  My usual work flow is to shoot in max resolution RAW, (7D), download to my MacPro, working with 27" LED screen (not calibrated), select website keepers, then edit only those keepers in Adobe Camera Raw, then "save as" JPEG ProphotoRGB 8 bit, 240 ppi, (usually downsize to ~ 1910x1274) and then "DONE" the original file.  Later I upload my keeper JPEGs to my hosting service (Phanfare) and I've just started 'sharing' some with a new FLICKr account to see how I like that service, and to facilitate copying to this forum.

I've experimented at times shooting sports in native JPEG, trying to save time post-processing, but for sports/lowlight, I find I need to post-process anyways.

Thanks for that tip - I usually shoot AI servo for indoor sports and now I know (in advance) why it wouldn't work. Love how you anticipated the next question.... :)

That is my real question, the ease of managing the original RAW and the 'edited' JPG (which the keepers get posted to the web) and then later, maybe get printed / enlarged, whatever. I find myself struggling with the colorspace issue / print profile of the different versions.  As I understand and develop my Photoshop workflow, I've learned to create project folders with subfolders for RAW/JPGs, but was curious the 'power' of LR to go back to help my old JPGs (pre RAW era) and more importantly moving forward, how to optimize workflow with new projects.

When LR imports RAW from the CF card, and then PS does the edits, where do the edits/original go?? are people happy with file management issues, I am happy using PS for my edits, but before adding another file management scheme (LR), I'd like to know if current users are happy  :)

While 'we' are troubleshooting the 430, can someone simply walk through how to use it as AF assist on a 7D.  I've heard about it but never took the time to read how to do it. Will it send out a weak flash output or simply an invisible IR pulse?  I'd like to improve my autofocus capture rate shooting indoor sports w/o the flash going off. Thanks in advance.

Currently using combo of Aperture and Photoshop 5 on multiple computers (with multiple copies all over the place :), and hoping to get more organized soon.  Is it worth my consolidating all my keepers into this new LR ? Is the transition easy?  Will it move (or copy) my originals as they are imported?

What is the shortcut to post from FLICKr ?

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7026/6666825461_b4321f8134_b.jpg

that is what I get if I copy/paste the URL from flickr.

How do I get the photo directly ?  Is there anyway (besides the link) without copying it back to my computer??
