Block.  It looks like she moved into the offensive player, by her left foot being a bit too far forward.

Let's keep this thread going guys!  Looks great!

Believe it or not they called a charge. I shoot for the white team, (Lady Tigers) and was not too happy with the call.  :), but did like this shot  ;)

Lenses / Re: How do yall compose a shot using a fisheye lens?
« on: February 13, 2013, 10:47:51 PM »
I also just got a 15 mm fisheye, but on my 5d3, the image does not fill the frame. In post with the LR lens profile, I seem to lose quite a bit of the image during cropping. Any suggestions?

My favorite lens for indoor / sideline sports on the 7D = 135/2 L  -- just at $1000

Otherwise,  I really like the 40 / 2.8 for budget all-purpose walkarounds

Glad he shares his 'opinion' on file quality, but actually showing images would have been much appreciated. ? NDA clause perhaps.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D III or 1D IV for sports!
« on: January 31, 2013, 11:37:43 AM »
Another factor not yet mentioned-any need to shoot video?  I use all three bodies, 1D-X, 1DIV and 5d3 with the 5d3 being used for video (less aliasing, easier controls).
As for strict comparison, there are actually pro/con for each, but overall user friendly of 1D body is hard to beat. Post -production wise, in my hands, MP/color rendering/DOF of FF 5d is slightly better, but reach/FPS trump those minimal advantages.
When on assignment alone with choice of bodies, I obviously take 1D-X and then the 1DIV....

cmon guys these gyms are beautifully lit lol

Ain't that the truth...  I won't say I intentionally underexposed that shot, but for the website site / small prints, I tolerate that degree of underexposure.
I saw one solution I won't try though - I was at a game last week, and I saw a 'pro' from the local newspaper setting up 4 flashes in each corner of the court and he was remote triggering them all with every shot!!  Very distracting for me, can't imagine how the players handled it. I wanted to have a seizure by halftime myself.  When I saw his shots (c/w mine) I realized it didn't help - but it didn't help he was shooting a Nikon either  ;)

Just a quick photo here explaining.  This is the exact same gym some time later, and this is the exact end of the floor in the same very pitiful lighting situation.  However, instead of using the 70-200 f/2.8L II IS at f/2.8, 1/500, ISO 5000, I used the 135 f/2L, f/2.2, ISO 5000.  In post I still had to go +0.40 exposure, but much better.

Gotta try my PS edit trick to get rid of that yellow haze - edit in PS, single adjustment layer - camera / cooling filter set at only 10-20% opacity - this will bring skin tones back to more natural.

Also, I use the 135 at f2 from the sidelines and don't have issues with DOF usually.  The extra stop helps keep ISO (noise) down.

Buy all three seriously.

I did...   :)

Me three...

Each has a place on the 5d3, but here is one of my favorites with the 85/1.2, it always reminds me why I got that camera/lens....

crapking...Great shots!

Also, I see you shot these at 1/1250, but you mention you used IS mode 1.  Do you feel like you need IS on when shooting at 120mm and 1/1250th?  Or maybe a better question, is it better to turn it off when not needed? ...or, does it even matter?

I'm just curious to hear your opinion on the subject.  Anybody else have an opinion on IS on or off relative to shutter speed?

On vacation, for this shot, I was in a 12 man zodiac in a choppy bay so I left in on.  :)
Pretty much leave it on all the time, unless doing portraits on a tripod.  Most of my sports shooting is either handheld or on a monopod and I see no reason / advantage to turn it off.  sometimes I drop shutter speed to 1/80 for candids to lower ISO so rather than fumble with the switch, I leave it on.
