Lenses / Questions for 5D3 and 70-300L
« on: April 17, 2013, 06:25:07 PM »

I am not meaning to start another redundant thread discussing 5D3 and 70-300L, but I wanted to get some real experiences and advices from users that actually own them.

I know the 70-300L is a really versatile lens considering its weight, reach and price compared to the 70-200 2.8II. But how good is it when paired with 5D3 indoor and under shades and on gloomy days? Can the high ISO capability on 5D3 make this lens as good and versatile under such conditions?

I have been debating between 70-300L and 70-200 2.8II, mainly due to weight and the ability to walk around and take it to vacations. If the 70-300L is as good, and still usable when light become dim, I might consider it over the 70-200 2.8II

Any thoughts/real world experience guys? Thanks for all your input!

Lenses / Any words on 70-200 f/2.8 L II (non IS version)?
« on: November 13, 2012, 01:29:49 PM »
As we all know, the EF 70-200 f2.8 IS II has been out for a while now. Any words if its sibling 70-200 2.8 L II is coming out any time soon? The lens was released roughly about 17 years ago (since 1995) and it is still a good lens.

I am thinking to get a 2.8 non IS version and afraid a new one is on the list being released soon. I don't need it right away, so I can wait.

Heard anything, anyone? Thanks

Portrait / Speedlight for perfect night portraits
« on: August 27, 2012, 02:14:57 PM »

I am still trying to master speedlight/night portrait photography, and ever since I upgraded to 5D3 with no built in flash, I am having difficulties using my 430EXII to get the correct exposure for night photography.

The usual setting would be trying to take pictures of people standing in front of a background scene at night. Whenever I try to use my speed light, the subject would turn out too bright and the background went completely dark.

I have read many forums and they all discussed different methods to achieve balance between nicely lit subject and visible background night scape.

So my question is, what is the correct settings for taking such pictures? I want to be able to use my 430EXII as my primary light for family vacation pictures, giving enough lightning to the subject as well as capturing the background night scape.

Any help is much appreciated, and yes, I am just starting to learn more about night photography with external flash :-)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Best place to buy 5D Mark III
« on: May 08, 2012, 03:38:06 AM »

What is the best place to buy a 5D Mark III right now? I know Canon has start shipping after the light leak fix and I know some are getting their cameras already.

Anybody out there just placed order recently and received the camera already? If so, where did you buy it from? If pre-ordered, how long is the wait? Adorama? Amazon? or BH?

Thanks guys, trying to get one but not sure where to order it from.

Technical Support / I dropped my 40D with EF 35L attached. Help pls!
« on: April 09, 2012, 03:39:26 AM »

It was unfortunate for me today to have dropped my came from about 4 feet straight down to some metal bars sitting on hardwood flooring. Now the camera is giving me Err 99 battery error.

So my questions:

1) any idea what this means? I already remove lens, card, battery (including the small clock battery) & nothing seems to help. What could be possibly wrong? And cost to fix ?

2) my 4 months old EF 35L suffered a ding on the side, about 1/2 inch from the lens edge behind the UV filter. When I tried plugging it into another body, pictures are no longer sharp especially below f/4.0. At f/1.4, it used to be really sharp, but now it's blurry. I am thinking to bring it back to Canon in Irvine but for this kind of problems, can it be fixed 100%? I really like the sharpness at f/1.4 & if after I fixed it, I'm really afraid it will not be the same anymore. Any inputs?

3) since my lens is still under warranty & I dropped it, would warranty cover the fix?

I appreciate your inputs. Any past experiences & knowledge sharings are welcome. It just sucks that I'm at Vegas for vacation & I am worried about my gears at the same time.
