Lenses / Re: BATTLE OF THE PRIMES: F1.8 Vs F1.4
« on: May 10, 2012, 05:26:00 PM »
I started with 50/1.8, a fantastic lens at the price. Then about 2 years later, I upgraded to 50/1.4. The 50/1.4 is a better lens in term of IQ and constructions, but it is still prone to front element damage if you are not careful. That is why I have my lens hood on all the time to protect it from banging into things.

For some reason, the 50/1.4 could never satisfy me. After much trials and error, I finally figured out that 50 on cropped body (since you are getting a 60D) is just too tight. I mainly shoot landscape and street photography, and some portraits. That is when I moved to 35/1.4L. The 35 is just perfect. It is being sharpest at 1.4, and the colors and contrasts are just great. The min focusing distance also make it a very ideal lens for food photography if that is what you are into. The superior built also make it worth its price.

If I were you, I would rent the 50mm and see if that is the focal length you need. It is just too narrow for my taste. If you find that 50 is too narrow, then you might actually need a 35. It took me a while to figure out.

Good luck!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Best place to buy 5D Mark III
« on: May 08, 2012, 03:38:06 AM »

What is the best place to buy a 5D Mark III right now? I know Canon has start shipping after the light leak fix and I know some are getting their cameras already.

Anybody out there just placed order recently and received the camera already? If so, where did you buy it from? If pre-ordered, how long is the wait? Adorama? Amazon? or BH?

Thanks guys, trying to get one but not sure where to order it from.

Lenses / Re: Are primes really more sharp?

It is really hard to explain how good are primes without actually using it. Just rent one, spend some time with it and you will know.

I recently bought a 35L and love everything about it. The ability to take sharp pictures constantly at f/1.4 change the attitude and taste of your pictures. The smooth bokeh renditions, colors, contrasts really set it apart from zooms.

Lenses / Re: 24-70L Repair/USM Replacement Question
« on: April 19, 2012, 04:19:35 PM »
Not sure how much is it gonna cost to repair the USM, but standard base price for lens repair is $269. Additional parts will be more, for sure.

I just had my 35L fixed a week ago. They opened up the lens, recalibrate and cleaned. All done for $269 and it took 2 days.

I also had my 40D fixed. They replaced the shutter assembly, the AF module, and the shutter button all for $209 (standard price to fix body, I think) and took 2 days as well. You might get lucky and get the USM replaced for $269. Good luck.

So you get the idea.

Nope the ding is still there. It is not a big deal because it is very faint but noticeable ding. That is why, make "putting on the hood" a habit. You never know when the hoods can be useful. If only I had the hood on, I am sure the ding will not be there.

On my 24-70, my hood is always on whenever I use it. I cannot afford to drop it by accident and damage the front element that might affect the zoom mechanism.

Just picked up my camera and lens.

The 40D has replacements of the shutter assembly, the shutter release button and AF unit
The 35/1.4 has misaligned center components and need to be re-calibrated.

Everything is fixed and cost me $209 for the body and $269 for the lens.
Never thought repair can be so expensive. Take good care of your gears guys...

Thanks Neuroanatomist.

I'll be heading to Irvine tomorrow to drop them off for repair. I'm sure the bill is going to be costly.

Technical Support / I dropped my 40D with EF 35L attached. Help pls!
« on: April 09, 2012, 03:39:26 AM »

It was unfortunate for me today to have dropped my came from about 4 feet straight down to some metal bars sitting on hardwood flooring. Now the camera is giving me Err 99 battery error.

So my questions:

1) any idea what this means? I already remove lens, card, battery (including the small clock battery) & nothing seems to help. What could be possibly wrong? And cost to fix ?

2) my 4 months old EF 35L suffered a ding on the side, about 1/2 inch from the lens edge behind the UV filter. When I tried plugging it into another body, pictures are no longer sharp especially below f/4.0. At f/1.4, it used to be really sharp, but now it's blurry. I am thinking to bring it back to Canon in Irvine but for this kind of problems, can it be fixed 100%? I really like the sharpness at f/1.4 & if after I fixed it, I'm really afraid it will not be the same anymore. Any inputs?

3) since my lens is still under warranty & I dropped it, would warranty cover the fix?

I appreciate your inputs. Any past experiences & knowledge sharings are welcome. It just sucks that I'm at Vegas for vacation & I am worried about my gears at the same time.
