Great response and i've learnt something thank you! I've never noticed this as i hardly ever shoot manual, anyone know why it seems to be more erratic on my 24 1.4 lens and not my 100mm, ? more testing needed etc

It seems then that the evaluative metering will start from the point of focus, but when switched to manual it will whole scene giving a brighter exposure

Thank you for all your replies, its nice to see i'm not going mad, it may not be a big deal, but when i switched to MF yesterday on a shoot, because my model wasn't inline with any 1 of my points, I had to manual focus, and then all my pictures were overexposed when I looked back at the images, I did only think this issue was with my combo 5D3 and 24 1.4 etc, thats why I reposted, but now reading the posts I see its with other lenses also

Thank You for at least replying, sometimes I get the feeling this Forum doesn't want to listen to any problems but to talk mainly about what's new coming out, or how well a Canon did compared to a Nikon vs dropping it

Please can you check your camera, in AV Mode and Evaluative Metering, do not move, and switch the lens to manual and back again to Auto AF and please look at your metering value does it change?

It doesn't seem to change with a different lens

But does with the 24mm

Ok first off, no one promised you a 70D today, so your negative feelings have nothing to do with Canon and everything to do with your expectations.

if you want to shoot video on a large-sensor camera, you have to learn how to focus manually.  The motion picture industry has been doing it this way since it's inception and continues to do so.  We are very far away from having AF for video on a DSLR, with as many lenses as there are it would be extremely difficult to make them all work perfectly.  I mean do you really want to trust a camera to pull focus for you at the right time and to the right place?  Instead of complaining about technology that probably isn't available just make do with what you have. 

Everyone else making videos with DSLR's and any other cinema camera do it this way, why can't you?  If you think the lack of this feature is what's holding you back from making great videos then you should go ahead and find a different gig.

And about switching to Nikon, I don't think switching is going to make the slightest bit of difference.  It seems like you want to blame the gear, a feature (or missing feature), and that could go on forever.  So like I said, try and make do with what you have, plenty of other people have made great stuff with the same gear.

Hello and Thanks for the info, I had no idea about this, how many points can you program, and also, how do you switch to each one? I can see how you can program a point, but not use that point etc

Almost certainly not...

If not then I wonder how they are going to fix this problem

"not sure what the fuss is about"  it really is something to worry about when your working with the camera, You have a time limit to deliver photographs and you cant take the shot you need because of this, also there are not allot of golden opportunities to grab a great shot all the time, so you need fast AF when the moment arrives,

this is a problem and Im so hoping the 5D3 gets a load of Love this 2013

Guys remember designing a work around isn't the way forward, There shouldn't be a need to have to work around a problem that basically should not exist in the first place, Im worried that the problem may start to become overshadowed by "what we all can do instead" I really am hoping for this tread to get heard, its a real problem and I do not believe for a moment it only happens in certain cameras (ie other 5D3's don't have this problem) its a problem with the 5D3 itself and needs to be addressed,

I would like to say thanks to everyone that has of course offered help in ideas making it easier while we wait for answers, but let us not forget the true problem exists and needs to be fixed,
