EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Magic Lantern Firmware - Good or Bad?

It works very well on my 500d. You can find a lot of features.
But I am not sure I will install it on 5dMkII.

I've put it on my 5d2 now (after the final unified build came out). Very quick and easy, and gives me a ton more controls and features such as timelapse with exposure ramping. Now I just have to figure out how to use it properly  :o

Wow, I just had an innocent enough question followed by some website research ... but had no idea some folks out there would be so spiteful in return for no apparent reason. Sheeesh.

Who's spiteful? I read a bunch of people chiming in saying "I haven't seen a problem" and "Works great for me" and "Stability is just fine" as well as a fairly reasonable set of positives about it.

Spiteful would be more saying you're a troll looking to bash something you haven't tried out or researched well, and just want the attention and we need the smite back simply for users like you.

But I'm not saying that, nor really meaning it. Just simply noticing you've had 3 posts, all in this thread, and all in the negative about a single 3rd party firmware that, while it has had problems in the past and undoubtedly in the future, generally doesn't brick or permanently damage the cameras users try and use it on. Oh, and Canon's firmware isn't perfect either. Virtually every update includes fixes to bugs that affects a small number of users that can be a real problem.

Personally, I haven't read anything anywhere that there is a strong possibility it will damage a camera with the exception of possibly some early, early builds for newly supported cameras. But they do warn you multiple times about those releases. For the rest, they simply say something to the affect of "By the way, this isn't officially Canon sanctioned, and while we haven't had any trouble, nor hundreds of other users for this release, it's at your own risk."

Why not use the mSATA slot and keep the DVD drive and the large HDD in the regular HDD spot?

Try and get some real reviews of the LCD panel, but that's not too bad. I have a 95% NTSC panel in my Lenovo w520 and it's pretty good, although I think I need to do better at proofing before I print on my Pixma Pro 9000 II.
Most of the people who own Sager laptops are gamers so they don't have the same requirements as us. The matte apparently is better than glossy and the 95% gamut was recommended for better color rendition.

The primary HHD slot is the only SATA3 slot in the machine, both the mSATA and the Optical bay are SATA2. They have an option to put the O/S on a mSATA SSD card or I could use it however I like. That is an appealing option - it is nice to see more options for storage move into portable devices for sure.

Ah, yes, to get the speed of a modern SSD you will need SATA3. But you could get a smaller, older mSATA for your boot drive, a decent sized and very fast SSD for your LR/PS Catalog/Preview/Scratch space, and then a regular old HDD in the DVD drive. Very appealing :)

Agreed. Especially by now, unless you're living on the bleeding edge, should be just fine.

Speaking of bleeding edge: ml alpha for 5d3 is out :-) ... but this is the kind that can brick your camera, unlike the very stable release versions. Still: "Good news, everyone!" ... http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2602.0

Too bad, a error message on that page.  Not much information for ML on 5D3.  I really miss ML after I upgrade my 5D2 to 5D3.

Sweet! Great news =D   I think I'll wait for it to move to beta before trying it out. I still have my 5d2 around with ML on it, which I really need to play with a lot more.

Sounds to me like someone who is trying to sabotage a damn near perfect reputation of magic lantern. Seems a bit like a troll to me

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Brightscreen Focus Screens?
« on: September 10, 2012, 07:16:27 PM »
Would you lose the ability to auto-focus with this screen in a 5D3?

I don't think this affects the AF at all, since that is done either by splitting off a small bit of the light down below the mirror box to the phase detect sensors, or via contrast detect on the image sensor itself in the case of LiveView AF. This likely(probably) will affect metering, since some/most/all metering is done via what gets bounced up into the VF area. Far as I know at least.

Ok....who wants to get rid of their mk1 version? I'm interested if you're will to let it go for a good price. Remember, the market is probably going to start getting a lot of those lenses out there ;)

Lenses / Re: Canon Celebrates the Production of 80 Million EF Lenses
« on: August 22, 2012, 12:45:38 PM »
Just goes to show how both Canon + Nikon have become volume sellers, with the emphasis now on shifting product to new customers (especially new emerging markets), rather than focusing on better new products for existing customers.

I am not sure if I agree with this statement. Two top lenses: Nikon's 14-24 f/2.8 and Canon's 70-200 f/2.8L IS Mk2 are clearly new better products for existing customers.

Nikon and Canon are able to sell large volumes of lenses because of their excellent DSLR bodies, extensive lens collections as well as massive support from 3rd party lens sellers (Sigma and Tamron). Sony and the m43 consortium still have a long way to go in terms of lens selection.

They are...but they also cost in the neighborhood of $2K+. Not exactly an easy sell for many if not most existing owners. Will I buy the 70-200L IS m2? You betcha! When? After I can manage to save up for it.

Huh, wow. This looks pretty great. It'd be pretty awesome to do ratios and such, and be able to adjust everything on the fly from the camera. Maybe I'll upgrade to this from the Phottix Strato II's in a while.

my only yongnuo product is a yn-560, and i've had zero problems with it.  also, it was like $60, and is a fast recharging, quiet, and powerful flash that can be triggered optically by a flash using either manual or ettl.  can't beat it for the price.
Speaking of the yn-560. Does anyone know what amount of control you'll be able to have with something like that with this product. Will you be able to change the power of it from the camera? If so, that makes those a huge bargain.

i would guess that no, it will only work as a trigger, but it has an optical trigger, so you don't even need one.  thats not the fault of the yn-622, its just that the yn-560 is made to be a simple/cheap/powerful flash and it doesn't have that capability built in.

I'd like to point out that i'm not 100% on this, but that is my guess.

I'd be willing to say you are correct. The YN-560 is manual only, no TTL of any kind. It's a simple optical/PC-sync trigger.

I've got one of those, and another one the way to use with my Phottix Strator (2x receivers). Works great, good power, plain old manual :)

@nickashley: On the Wall Street image, how did you get that selective focus without a Tilt-Shift lens?

That just bit edge blur in PS as so busy all people would been distracting in the image, lens is great as so light and in New York the wide is just amazing what you can get in. I'd love tilt shift lens for things like this to get a nice slice of selective focus.

It is sharp lens in all stuff i've done with it mostly wide stuff.

Ah, makes sense. I thought it might be some PS work. Sounds like not a whole lot :)

Yeah, i'd really be hoping that it's some PP going on, no Canon lens should be *that* soft, it looks like a Lensbaby at f/8 or so...

Well...except for the Tilt-Shift lenses which let you do selective focus like that. That's only when you use it to do that, of course, but it's one of the nifty features of those lenses.
