I agree with some above....in your shoes, I would get a used 40D and better glass versus a 60D and less quality glass.  Craigslist, Fred Miranda.com, etc for used gear.

I hope a Feb 28th announcement is true.  Gives me time to cancel my D800 order if Canon blows me away.   ;D

Am I to expect the same 61pt AF system that's in the 1D X?

Very nice the  noise in the Nikon D800....
I will switch to Canon !!!! (funny me)

in all seriousness, I agree with the noise comments.  I'm very surprised at the amount of grain present even in ISO 100 JPGs shown on Nikon's own site.  the interior architectural shots at f/8 are even worse; the diffraction is clearly evident in preventing additional detail from being rendered.

Are you guys seriously ragging on the stellar images of the library interior from the D800?  wow.   I think the images I've seen from the D800 are outstanding.  Wait for it....nope, the world didn't end.

Finally... Nikon releases their version of the 5d2....but with very good AF.  Now, I want to see the ISO performance.
If it equals the D700...likely imo...that would be a success.  And if the version w/AA filter is $3k as rumored vs $4k w/o AA...it will be quite the camera.

The big wild card is the 5DIII. If it specs out as a high-resolution, compact body with a much-improved AF system, then I'll stick with Canon. If it specs out as a 1Dx Jr. with the same 18 mp sensor, but with a castrated AF system, then all my Canon gear is going up on ebay.

I'm right behind you.

I just can't believe Canon will not significantly improve the AF performance for the mark III.  That would be absolutely stupid imo.  The D800 will eat its lunch.  Hell, the NEX 7 would compete with it!  ::)

I just got an Induro.  As a good value, I'm really impressed...but I wouldn't try 300mm and up lenses on it.  My 200f2 works...reasonably well.

Maybe look at Feisol as a more affordable alternative to Gitzo.

 but I wouldn't call 7D performance hideous.

Sorry, but compared to a D3S?  Hideous comes pretty close imo  :)

The funny thing though is the way that Nikon users are looking forward to a 36MP camera extolling the virtues of high MP count sensors while forgetting the arguements they used to defend the 12MP they currently have.

Some maybe, but I would say a majority of Nikon shooters, especially the D700 shooters are not in favor of a 36MP cam.
Of course, the landscape shooters are saying "bring it on!"  :)

Imo, this falls into the "do it right once" category... similar to tripods / heads.  In that spirit,  I got the Singh Ray vari ND.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: How bad is the AF on 5DmkII really?
« on: November 23, 2011, 10:09:59 PM »
I think the question is..."5d2 AF compared to what?" Compared to, say a Nikon D700... a 5d2 in good light, on slow moving subjects it's "B-".  In low light, a C-.  In a studio, shooting portraits... B+.  So for landscape and studio shooters, the 5d2 is a fantastic value.  Throw in video...all the more so.  For PJ and sports?...unfortunately, it's "spray and pray".
