I agree with you that 1Dx and D800 is in different class, pricewise!
What if 24MP D800 can do 8fps and 10fps with grip at 3K-4K price, 2fps difference can be ignored. Lost of photography will turn to D800, obviously the price difference can buy 1-2 L lenses. Same reason lots of photographies buy 5D II instead of 1DsIII.
Canon is in a very bad position, there are rumors about sony will release 3 full frame cameras next year, including a 24MP EVF full frame. I am sure they can do 10 fps since nex 7 already does. Again, compare with 1Dx, they are not in the same class in terms of the continuous focus, but price is a big factor.
