Lenses / Best Lens for Tabletop Dinnerware Shoot
« on: June 29, 2012, 02:18:14 PM »
Hi everyone,
I'm wondering what other photographers are using when shooting products?  I've been hired by a magazine to shoot high end dinnerware, silverware products and I'm not sure is using a TS-E 90mm 2.8 or 100mm 2.8 macro would be best?
This will be shot indoors on a large table; the editor and stylist want the focus to be both single items and overall look and feel...... with some DOF.  I'm using a Canon 5D MK2 for this shoot.

Also, what do you guys think about using a 50mm 1.4 prime?

Any input would greatly be helpful  :)

EOS Bodies / Re: where to sell canon gear, I'm moving to Nikon
« on: June 07, 2012, 03:03:46 PM »
I have a 5D, w 70-200 f4, 24-105, 85 1.4, 50 1.4, grip, 2 580s.  I've been waiting for the price to come in line w Nikon on the 5dii.  That does not look like it's going to happen-  especially considering the angst with the 5diii.

Where is the best place to unload this used gear?

Thanks

Martin
If still available, I'm interested in 1 580 and 85.  Email me and let me know your price??

Software & Accessories / Re: Lightroom 4.1 Running SLOW!
« on: June 03, 2012, 04:49:25 PM »
I purchased a new I7 quad core, 3.6GHZ, and loaded 32 GB Crucial Ram.  I have 3 HD's, first is a 560 GB SSD to run programs, 2nd 1TB to hold all cache and catalogs, 3rd 2TB to finalize my photos and storage.  Even with this set-up and when running LR 4.1 it still lags A LOT.........
I think no matter how fast your PC is and try to optimize LR the SLOWNESS and LAG issues will be there until Adobe decides to update the issue with their next realease (4.2 or 3 or 4).  You get what you pay for, $150 or $99 for a powerfull program like LR will always have issues.  My copy of Photoshop CS5 $799 performs so much faster that I can't keep up sometimes.

My 2 cents!!

I suggest you try putting the RAW Cache and Cat. on the SSD.

BTW for LR, anything more than 8GB is currently overkill, unless you need it for other programs....which may effect your LR performance if resident...depends...
I had that set-up on my i5 before this machine and was running LR3.6 same issue.
Actually, I have a program that monitors RAM called ballisticks utility, I have seen LR consume around 12+GB of RAM when processing.  Plus I have CS5 master collection and having PS, DW, and LR open I need the RAM power.

Thank you guys for the information.  I'm leaning more towards the TS-90mm that I can rent for the day from my local rental shop.
PWP, you indicate that the 90's sweet spot is at f9 what type of light do you use?  If I use speedlites, how far from the product should it be set-up? Also, umbrella or softbox is best to diffuse light?  One more thing, shooting at the lens sweet spot, I'm assuming you're using a tripod with a trigger?

What do you guys also think about shooting with a 50mm 1.4?  It's a good sharp lens, with it's sweet spot at f2.0

This will be my first product shoot and I would like to go in pistols loaded, any help from you guys would greatly be appreciated.  I'm more than comfortable shooting for this Mag given that I've shot several times for them and they know me.

Thanks again for all the information you can provide

Lenses / Best Product Lens

Hey Guys,
I normally shoot events for a magazine I've been with for a couple of years; however, I was just asked to shoot 2 different products.  One shoot is for high end Tea and the other is for high end dinner ware all indoors.  The focus will be on each of the product and this editor is a stickler about the shallow DOF using my 5D2.  I'm mainly looking for suggestions on a couple of lenses for this type of shoot?  I will have lighting set-up triggered thru a pocket wizard for fill light too, shooting manual at probably f8 - f11.

Thanks

Lens microadjustments only need to be performed in rare cases. Usually the camera and lens fit within a tolerance of each other and those microadjustments aren't necessary.

I'm not going to bother reading all the pages in between here and now, I'll just say that every single lens I use on my 5D2 needs AFMA.

Every single one.

I have a MK2 and not trying to sound like an amature, but, what's  AFMA?

If you buy an F1.2-F1.8 lens and it works perfectly out of the box with your camera, you got lucky.

EOS Bodies / Re: buy 7D now or 5D Mark II later?
« on: February 15, 2012, 06:21:21 PM »
I was chatting with the guy over at ritz today. Their price for the 5dii was at $2200USD. He said that when the mkiii is released, they would probably be dropping down to around 1700. He could've just been a moron but if that's the case, that'd be a great buy.
With the upcoming announcement of the 5D3 (god knows at what price). See http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/02/5d-mark-iiix-information-cr1/
I don't see the 5D2 price dropping.  Look at the current prices on the market now, cheapest one is at $2,156.  If you need it, get it now.

Henry's has stock available for $1999.99 CDN. At today's rate that would work out to $1962 US.
http://www.henrys.com/23776-CANON-EOS-5D-MK-II-DIGITAL-SLR-BODY.aspx
I just received the Henry's flyer to the door here in Toronto and it says "EOS 5D Mark II sale prices expire Jan 31st " and I Googled around a bit a saw a couple of other retailers saying the same thing.

I hope I don't regret having not jumped on this - I am still holding out for the 5D3...
I ended up buying the camera body only!  Paid $2175 for it.  Jamesy, I would jump on it.  I don't think we'll see the MK3 available until 3rd or 4th quarter of this year.  Can you wait that long......

Technical Support / Re: canon factory cleaning costs
« on: January 21, 2012, 10:26:45 AM »
Anyone knows what is the average costs for a lens or camera body, clean and/or check service?
trying to determine if their CPL memberships are anything worth:
the gold member offers two free check and clean - body or lens - and costs $100 per year
When I take my gear to canon's Irvine, Ca factory service center they charge $35.00 for a sensor clean (any body).  When my 30D needed cleaning, canon charged me $60.00 and they also included a sensor clean with it.  My buddy, took his 24-70 due to a fall and broke the mounting barrel, they charged him $180 to repair and clean the lens.  The good thing I found is when joining CPS, you get your equipment back a lot faster than a normal consumer.

Go for the IS II - much much better - really good on the 5DII.

Maybe a bit long for most landscapes? although good for urban images
Hey Brian, I agree that the IS and ISII are great, but I have the original non-IS 2.8 and it too is a great lens... Just saying that incase he dioes not want to spend the extra grand......

Ahhhh, damn watermark.  I did that on the fly with lightroom processing from Raw to JPEG.  Ha, Ha..... Thanks for the catch Adam :)  You know, I'll keep it up there for giggles
