Technical Support / New camera and Lens calibration
« on: August 15, 2012, 12:19:33 AM »
I've seen some posts online saying that lenses under warranty get one free lens calibration or if your body is under warranty, they will calibrate all your lenses and body once.

Has anyone had experience with this?

Also my understanding was that AFMA was specifically for AF, and by doing a lens calibration there is the chance of your lens getting better IQ than when went in.

doesn't the 1dx also have better ISO performance?

i'd go 16-35L, 24-70mk2, 200-400L (the one at the olympics with the 1.4x teleconverter)

If you are going to be moving up to FF in the next year or so, then I would get the 16-35L.  It's a great zoom range on a crop and will be your landscape lens when you move to FF.  The only thing i would do is just wait till the end of this month to see if the 14-24 get announced.

the 10-22 is a great lens.

But to get back to your question, I have both the 35L and the 50 1.4 on my 550D, and the 35L is pretty much my lens of choice.  One caveat is that when I go shooting landscapes, I always use my 10-22 instead.  The 35L is a great lens, but it feels meh on my 550D because like someone mentioned before, 56mm equival focal length is kinda limiting.

I actually just ordered a 24-105L myself, and have a suspicion that that will be my walk around lens with the 35L reserved for low light shots.

Lenses / Re: Center Pinch Lens Caps

I have one of these lens caps.  Like someone mentioned before, it's quite loose and doesn't seem all that well made.

Personally, i find the Tamron center-pinch caps of much higher quality and have them on all my lens.

You are only allowed Samsung or Panasonic cameras in, in case you upset the sponsors.

Not really.  But probably the next goodwill sapping doctrine that will be issued.

Personally I wouldn't bother taking a camera.  Sky plus it, keep the newspapers.  Enjoy the experience when you are there.  Don't shoot me down in flames, just a humble opinion.

Except all the cameras in the pool itself are 1Dxs...

2nd time posting a picture to the forums... But this was my first attempt at fireworks with all the tips gathered from this thread.

It was a small festival with only 3000 fireworks launched lasting only 90 min, and they were all launched form the same area as they all exploded in the exact same spot, so no way to layer the images.  In the future i'd probably try shorter exposures as I was sitting at 4-8secs for the most part.

650D 10mm f/14 2 secs exposure.

Btw, if you love fireworks you really should come to Japan.  There is a fireworks festival every weekend until Oct. in towns within an hours train ride from me.

This is the main reason why my wife is letting pick up the 5dmk3.  To be able to take great pictures of our kids (when they finally come).  Now is just practicing so i can take a great shot like this for when the day comes :D

Twins on the way?

Hehe... wife isn't even pregnant yet, but I was referring to multiple future kids.  But I do want twin girls for some reason, but with the wife being Japanese, the chances are pretty low (Asia has have half the rate of twins compared to non-hispanic whites).

Always nice to see my hometown.

My only comment is that i would have used a 50mm lens and taken more shots to put this together to reduce distortion.

Amazed that canon put a 35mm equivalent lens on this.  Surprised it's only f/2 though, but should be enough to take alot of low light shots.  Will actually teach people how to use a camera too(hopefully)!

And it looks like the flash as AF assist... that's nice. Wondering if that flash can be used on a dSLR?

$200 for an adapter is ridiculous.  It's basically a glorified extension tube.
