EOS Bodies / Are you really serious about 6D?

Please help me understand why people are excited about 6D? I cannot be excited about 97% VF, 1 x-pt AF, crippled 6D with wifi and facebook buttons. I will stick to a 5-year-old beloved 5D Mark II which is identical in IQ to Canon's newest sensors. Canon, you are not getting a dime of my money on your recent cameras. I have diversified my lenses so am not hostage to inferior sensors anymore.

We all know that Canon's sensor tech is not getting rave reviews these days, but this is not about the sensor tech, but the sensor SIZE. All FFs have same size, but APS-C varies across companies.

Canon's APS-C is 10% smaller than its competition's. So, for Canon's crop cameras to be on the same playing field as the competition, they will have to have better sensor tech.

Question: after EOS 1DX's trashing of D4 and 5D Mark III's victory over D800, will 6D destroy D600 for a complete Canon FF sweep?

With the EOS 1Dx, Canon has the best AF (after the f/8 focusing and black focus point fix), best frame rates, best low light ever, and of course the best pro sensor according to the rumored DxO leaks.

And it sucks for those using lower tiered Canon products with older sensor tech, but Canon's flagship has certainly been crowned the undisputed king of pro bodies. Hopefully now the lower tiered products get the same superior sensor in the future. May be 6D is that breed of new superior sensors coming out. Watch out sonikon, Canon is back with a vengeance!

Third Party Manufacturers / IMAX is 220 megapix, Canon's max STILLS are 22 megapix.

4K is 8 megapix. 8K is a mere 30 megapix. But IMAX is 10x 8K. Anyone thinks we are still in digital infancy in terms of resolution? DR-wise it ain't even pretty. Film kills digital. Canon being the worst of all.

Within the camera/dslr world, based on the rumor sites, Canon-Sony-Nikon seem pretty active.

Nikon Rumors has D600 updates, Sony Alpha Rumors has FF mirrorless and camcorder updates, while Canon Rumors has Canon printers updates? And CR1-rated "EOS 3D" Buzz about low priced FF? No knock of CR, but is it that hard to get Canon info?

Either Canon is really good at keeping secrets, or they are asleep at their wheels.

Let's all take a deep breath and accept that some camera manufacturers have great sensors, while some manufacturers have great JPG engines. Let's all also accept that some camera manufacturers show progress by having high megapixel and high ISO cameras in one body, while some manufacturers have great JPG engines.

It is just a matter of taste and style. Some manufacturers introduce a new high megapixel body with 50% more resolution with price cut by 3-times from its previous high megapixel body, while some manufacturers have great JPG engines.

Different tools for different trades. What matters is how we use the tool.

DxoMarks shows 5D mkIII's high iso is pretty low, much lower than its Nikon counterparts. And that is backed up by DPReview comparison tool. Have a look at this:



Absolutely no detail in 5DIII's high-iso JPG. It looks like the so-called high ISO improvement is in JPG, and only at the expense of the image quality and detail. So, please explain what is so amazing about 5DIII's high iso performance? Its RAW is same as D800's, albeit lower detail. JPG is just embarrassing.

I have Pentax has the reference. It shows what-should-have-been ideal.

It is interesting that 5D3's comparison base is 5D2. D800 is being compared to Leica S2 and PhaseOne IQ180.

"5D3 is far better than 5D2, especially in handling, JPGs, and AF."

versus

"D800 comes close to MF like S2 and IQ180 in other aspects, but clearly fails in midtones."

I sincerely believe that Canon did everything it could to 5D3. Its AF is dramatically improved, its body is improved, and its shooting is improved. There is no question that if Canon had improved sensor, they would have made it part of 5D3. So, if/when Canon has a modern sensor, it will make it part of 5D4 or 5D5.

Canon just does not have a modern sensor or technology for the price point, thus 5D3 had to be content with 5D2 sensor.

That above was our conclusion and the factor in not completely switching to Nikon. We will hang on to our Canon gears (lenses and flashes mostly) for a year or two.

Okay, we can cry bias and be in complete denial, but Canon has inferior sensor from the early 2000! Their tech is a decade behind than Nikon. When will they start accepting the fact and invest a little more? It used to be Canon could at least claim "we have high megapixels", but now they can only claim "DXO is biased".

We need competition, otherwise Nikon will become stagnant, just like Canon has become. Sorry for the rant, not trying to rub salt on our collective Canon wounds.

EOS Bodies / Rant/Wish - What Canon Needs to Keep Me "Loyal"

I have been with Canon for over 12 years. 100% Canon for over a decade. That being said, we are at the cross roads where dumping all of our Canon dslr gear. It would not mean much "loss" anyway since L can be sold easily and bodies are worn out anyway.

Of course, we have not pulled the trigger yet... awaiting what 1Dx and 5Dx/III have in store. We already know what Nikon has with high mpx D800 and high ido D4. Nothing is secret in Nikon's camp... high resolution outputs from D800 shows incredible detail and there are bunch of high ISO D4 files showing equal/better D3s performance! So, for us, Nikon is looking very good.

1Dx and 5Dwhatever are nowhere to be seen. Specs are everywhere! 1Dx is supposed to have incredible performance, but where are some high ISO samples?

In a nutshell, here are some points where Canon is getting beat pretty badly:

1. Dynamic Range: Both Nikon and Sony have eaten Canon alive in this. No comparison.
2. High ISO: Nikon is ahead... 1Dx was supposed to be promising, but where is the proof?
3. AF: Nikon AF is much better and much spread out to all of its pro and semi-pro models. Canon? Cripple everything.
4. Mpx: This is where Canon had advantage... not anymore!
5. Video: Again, Canon used to be the King, but with Clean Video... audio monitoring... Nikon is way ahead. I really doubt Canon would cannibalize its video division by giving these features in their dslrs.

Now please tell me why should sane people not "jump ship" to a BETTER system?
