Lenses / Re: Have you one of the new 24-70 f4 canon lenses, Is it good
« on: January 31, 2013, 11:52:33 PM »
I like the 24-70mm f/4 IS very much.  I originally bought the f/2.8 MkII, it is a fantastic lens, however I need the IS for low light event shooting.  But, back to the subject at hand, while I had the 2.8 MkII I rented the Tamron, in my opinion, not as good as Canon.  When the f/4 came out, I rented it and compared it to the f/2.8 and "for what I need" the f/4 was the winner and I returned the f/2.8 and bought the f/4.  All comparisons done on a 5dMkIII.

Price was not the issue, the new hybrid IS on the f/4 allows me more than enough room to make up for the one stop difference and I get all the benefits of IS (yes, I give up one stop of DOF, but check out the DOF calculator - it is minimal).  Where in the world these folks are coming from saying the 24-105 IQ is better than the 24-70 f/4, either don't own the 24-70 f/4 or they are trolls.  The IS on the 24-105 is old 2nd generation and does not hold a candle to the new 24-70 f/4 and 70-200 f/2.8 MkII.  This hybrid IS is rock solid.

I just wish the naysayers would come out and honestly say whether they have actually shot with the lens or not.  Further, on an actual shoot and not shooting a bunch of test circles.  (I have never been paid a penny for test shots).  Finally, I need IS and it is my money, so don't critisize me for my shortcomings (unless you are willing to pay good money for it).

I love Canon products and applaud them for offering a wide range of great products with a wide range of price points.  Finally, if they introduce a f/2.8 IS, I would strongly consider buying it just because I can!

Lenses / Re: Buy Canon 24-70l II today or wait for Newer version with IS?
« on: December 20, 2012, 12:26:22 PM »
Why no mention of the new 24-70 f/4 IS version that should be available in January?  I have the  24-70 vII now and just rented the Tamron for comparison.  I didn't care for the Tamron that much and didn't feel their VC comes anywhere close to the Hybrid Canon IS version that is on the 70-200 vII.

Now I am considering returning the f/2.8 and ordering the f/4.  Just don't know.  I love the IQ with the new 24-70 on the 5DMkIII but scared to death of camera shake on the shot that I need to capture.

Any speculation that the IQ will be less on the f/4?

Software & Accessories / Re: 5diii and IPAD 4th Generation
« on: December 13, 2012, 12:30:53 PM »
I would like to take this question one step further.  Has anyone tried to tether their 5D3 with the latest generation (retina display) IPad.  I would like a "fast" preview device with a larger screen than is on the back of the camera.  I have read that there is "kind of a way" using a WiFi card in camera and loading an app on the IPad.  Sounded a little "hit and miss."

I do a lot of on-site work and this would be very valuable, just looking to see what others think or have actual experience.

Frame in the general area, press the focus square selection button (focus squares are bright and easy to see), move the desired focus square over the point you want to focus, press the shutter button halfway and the bright focus squares dissapear and you now achieve focus and metering - take picture.

I have only tried this in manual with flash attached and turned on.

Hope this works for others that were having the same problem as me.  I just could not find my selected focus square (usually center spot) as they were very dim and only remained on for a split second, lock focus and then shoot.  I hope Canon will give us a fix for this in the April firmware update.  I never had this problem with my 7D.

Let me know if anyone else has any other ideas.  Thanks

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Where to get photography training?
« on: November 26, 2012, 05:55:11 PM »
I was in the same boat.  Looked high and low, finally settled on New York Institute of Photography.  Depending on your payment option choice, it runs about $1,000.  But I think it is well worth it and you do all the work on your schedule, not someone else's.

Pros:  Very, very thorough printed (study guide), audio (CD) and video (DVD).  Great individual evaluations by  your assigned instructor.  Six sessions, each with a final exam.  Easy to reach "student advisors" for questions.

Cons:  Some of the material is a little dated and they devote a good amount of time to film.  However, I found the film discussions helped me with the digital challenges.

I am about half way through and already see a marked improvement.  I would do it again!

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 5D Mark III Blinking Red AF Point Information

attn:  bkorcel, I have an offer for you.  How about I trade you a little of my kindness and respect for others for your eyesight?  My sight is failing and I need all the help I can get through the viewfinder.  And one more thought; you might be the answer to all my retirement needs:  I just buy you for what your worth and sell you for what you think your worth....
PLEASE!  If that is a reason to return your MK3 in favor of the 7D then you obviously spent too much money for your ability.  GO ahead and return it or sell it and those of us who use the 5D3 will continue to turn out better pictures with less noise and higher resolution.

At least they should try to make the outline of the focus square box (selected AF point) bolder.  At the current "very thin lines" it is very hard to find against any back ground but white.  I shoot single point most of the time and compared to my 7D the 5DMkIII is a pain in the bippy.  A bolder box should not affect metering unless the bolder lines will emit more light the instant it flashes red when focus is confirmed.

At this point I am considering the return of my MkIII and just go back to my 7D.  Otherwise it is a wonderful camera body.

Lighting / Suggestions for a Beauty Dish with a 580 or 600 Canon Speedlite
« on: November 02, 2012, 05:25:58 PM »
Need help with recommendations on a beauty dish for use with Canon 580 or 600RT.  I would rather stay with speedlites rather than stobes (I think, am I wrong) because I do most of my work on location.  Thanks

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Deal: Canon EOS 5D Mark III $2799 from eBay
« on: October 31, 2012, 06:09:54 PM »
Just remember one very important thing regarding MAP, it ONLY applies to the minimum price a retailer can advertise an item for.  It does NOT establish a minimum a retailer can SELL an item for.  So if you see the 5D MkIII listed or advertised for $3,499 starting tomorrow, call them and just ask would you be willing to sell it for $2,999?  If they say no, they can't do that because of Canon.  Explain that no factory or distributor can legally set a minimum sell price, they can establish a minimum adverstised price in the United States.  Big difference between the two.

Lenses / Re: EF-S 17-55 on a 7D
« on: October 29, 2012, 04:55:58 PM »
I love my 7D / 17-55mm combo and yes, I use (and depend on the IS).  I am ordering the 5D MkIII and will primarely use my 70-200mm IS MkII on it, but will not give up my 7D 17-55 until Canon adds IS to the 24-70.

OR:

I depend on IS (I am a senior & not as steady as I once was) and shoot a lot of events in low light.  I am trying to convince myself to get the current version of the 24-70mm MkII to use with the 5D MkIII and just push the ISO to gain more shutter speed.  And I am hoping the 5D MkIII's shutter is not as heavy handed as my 7D.  I find myself really pushing down hard on the 7D shutter.  I am glad that shutter is not the trigger on my 9mm!!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / canon 5D MkIII on sale at B&H
« on: October 23, 2012, 04:43:57 PM »
$3,199.  This is a net price, not a rebate.  There are rebates available with the purchase of a printer.  The price is getting closer to my trigger point!  Now if we could just get that little red blinking AF point thing'y, I would be happy and a lot closer to the poor house.

5D MK III Sample Images / Re: 5d Mk III - outdoor night time sports
« on: October 21, 2012, 01:16:03 PM »
Nonac, you no good evil dog.  I had talked myself out of the 5DmkIII and you have to go and post these wonderful shots.  They are fantastic.  I realize it is 80% photographer and 20% his/her equipment, however you have rekindled the 5DmkIII flame within me.  So when my wife has my butt for buying this camera, I will explain that it is all your fault...

Very nice captures, Sports Illustrated quality.
