Lenses / Can a UV filter affect IQ (sharpness) on a lens?
« on: June 02, 2012, 08:34:03 PM »
Using a 7D, ef-s 17-55mm and a Hoya HMC SUPER UV(0) and without the filter my results seem more precise at the intended focus point (usually center spot).  I don't understand and I have never experienced this before.  I have used this filter on my 70-200 f2.8 MkII and never noticed any loss in IQ.

Is this an issue with the 17-55 lens?  I just purchased this lens 30 days ago and without the filter the lens performs flawlessly and I love the results.  At first I thought I might have a slight front focus issue and then I tried the lens without the filter, bingo, much better.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

How about an official announcement in the next 30 days with a July delivery??  Count me in for IS similar to ef-s17-55mm.  Killer sharp like 70-200mm MKII and 17-55.  Weight and size are less important to me as long as it is a must have lens.  The price depends on the quality and IQ.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 50mm f1.4
« on: April 21, 2012, 03:37:18 PM »
I just want a new 50mm f1.4L USM IS.  If they can put IS on a new 24 and 28mm, why not a new 50mm or 24-70 for that matter.  The IS on the new 70-200mm f2.8 Mk2 is FANTASTIC, I love it.  Please listen to us Canon, we are begging.

I was very disappointed to learn that the new Canon 24-70 MkII would not have IS (and the price) so my question is can the Tamron come close to the new Canon version?

I am so happy with the new Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS MkII.  The IS is wonderful and I want to replicate it with my 24-70 purchase.  I realize the Tamron model has not been introduced or reviewed, however I am not familiar with Tamron and curious if they can produce a high quality lens in the ballpark with the new Canon 70-200?

There is a huge difference in the IS results between my 24-105L and my 70-200 f2.8 MkII (camera shake).  The tech at Canon explained that the IS in the new 70-200 is a better quality and the latest design.  So my next question is-- does this new IS version exist or planned (rumored) in any future Canon mid-range zoom lenses?

I can't wait to see a side by side comparison of the new Tamron 24-70 to the new Canon version, hopefully on a Canon 7D and a 5D3.  Need to finalize my 2012 purchase list.  Just hope the Canon version doesn't slip past July and Canon resolves the production and Firmware issues on the 5D3.  The wait is killing me!!!

I wonder what body Tamron used?  I am impressed with the shots.

I love my Sigma 50mm f1.4.  It is the only non-Canon glass I own and use it a ton on my 7D.  I learned to shoot on manual with this lens!!!

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 7D... not Mk 2, Not anything, Just the 7D
« on: March 19, 2012, 01:26:15 PM »
I too have Alstate, oops, I mean Canon 7D.  I love it and still learning new things everyday.  I made myself promise, not another new body until I can use every feature flawlessly and actualy know why I am using the feature.  If the new 7DmkII shows up sooner rather than later....what the heck, it was only a promise, not a mortgage on a new home!!!

After the the 7DmkII, maybe a FF, don't know yet.  Guess it depends on what the 5DmkVII can do.  I am thinking a FF would be good for hallway shots at the nursing home, you know-wheel chair races!

Lenses / Re: Advice on ef-s 17-55mm f2.8 IS
« on: March 15, 2012, 10:22:30 PM »
Thanks everyone, very good advice.  Before I pull the trigger on the 17-55 does anyone know when it was introduced and are there any rumors of a pending upgrade or replacement?

One final comment that helped me make the buying decision.  Last night I had a shoot at church (gratis of course) using my 24-105mm and I did not allow myself to go past the 55mm mark.  Fairly revealing.  It is a lot easier to move closer than further back (indoors).

Lenses / Advice on ef-s 17-55mm f2.8 IS
« on: March 13, 2012, 09:55:26 PM »
Using a 7D I was wanting the new 24-70mm, however the price and no IS has me looking for options.  I shoot a lot indoors and enjoy fast lenses, ie. 70-200mm f2.8 II, Sigma 50mm f1.4, ef-s 10-22mm f3.5 and ef24-105 IS.

I am trying to decide if the 17-55 would work for me.  I rented this lens over Christmas and just felt I had to get in everyones face to get good head and shoulder shots.  Maybe I did not give it a chance so thus my plea for help today.  Then this weekend I did two shoots with the 50mm and I could not get far enough away to do groups (more than 4 people) and I started thinking about the 17-55 again.

My hope of getting a 5DmkIII was delayed by the intro price and to be honest my 7D is treating me very well.  So the concern of buying another ef-s lens is waning and I am now enjoying the anticipation of a new 7D.  Maybe!!!!

I have read the reviews on the 17-55 and I am aware of the dust issue, the weight is not a concern and I thought the overall sharpness on my rental copy was very good.  So any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.

My experience with B&H has been for the rare few times they have been out of stock, they seem to always get it back in stock and shipped within a week.  Of course this means the manufacturer has the products on hand to ship to them.  In over 4 years their fullfillment rate has been super.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Help with my "itch" for a FF
« on: February 26, 2012, 08:48:52 AM »
I prefer to use my own gear.  I have rented some equipment from Lensrentals when I feel there is a need outside the items in my bag.  That is how I feel in love (and later bought) the new 70-200mm f2.8 IS II.  And I am thinking that is exactly what I will do when LR gets the new 5D in stock.

This is the same way I felt when I had my new 1967 GTO, I loved it but was eventually tempted by the '69 Grand Prix.  Traded and have never forgiven myself.  My 7D is the same thing, I love it but there is this dang itch for a FF.

Thanks to everyone for their help.  So now instead of more advice, just send money!!!  LOL

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Help with my "itch" for a FF
« on: February 23, 2012, 09:12:58 PM »
Currently I have a 7D (two years now) and it was an upgrade from a 40D.  I really like the improved auto focus and the metering.  So far I have not tried video as I have focused only on stills and improving my knowledge of the functions of the camera.

I have the ef-s 10-22mm, sigma 50mm f1.4, ef 24-105mm f4.0L, and (my treasure) 70-200mm f2.8l II.  I "think" I want the new 24-70mm f2.8 II but without IS I am disappointed and might go with the ef-s 17-55mm f2.8 IS.  Speedlite 580 EX II, custom bracket, Manfrotto tripod and monopod.

I shoot a lot of low light (fast lenses and high ISO) AV and manual mostly.  My subjests are primarely residental real estate, events and receptions (wedding assistant), youth sports, landscapes and just starting some photojournalism.  Not much into studio portraits, although I am going to get some portable lighting so I can do some volunteer portrait work at church and local nursing homes.  I don't crop a lot or print larger than 8x10  except some 10x14.

I realize the new 5DIII has some features that might be beneficial to my described work above, but I need some feedback from the experienced folks here to help me rationalize the $$$$'s for the new 5DIII.  I was never tempted by the 5DmkII because of the focusing benefits of the 7D.

So, open up and lead me in the right direction.  If I am going to the poor house with a FF I want it to fill a much justified need.

Many thanks.

Lenses / Re: Problems with 50 f1.4 & 135 f2.0 on 1.6x crop sensors
« on: February 21, 2012, 10:16:47 PM »
No problem with the sigma 50mm f1.4 on my 7d.  I rented the canon 135mm f2.0 but didn't have a lot of luck.  All my fault with a slower shutter speed than I should have used for the focal length resulting in camera shake.  I was trying to shoot a dance recital in very low light.  Valuable lesson learned.
