Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Tamron introduces 24-70mm f/2.8 with IS
« on: February 09, 2012, 08:03:47 AM »
Has anyone seen a availability date?  Then I am guessing it would take 30 days for a few reliable reviews to surface.  The price of the Canon 24-70mm II and omission of IS has me interested in the Tamron offering.

Canon thinks that IS is important on a new 24mm prime but won't even consider making IS available as an option on the 24-70mm?  Please Canon, give us a choice!  Wouldn't it be better to take our money rather than seeing it go to Tamron???

The new IS on the 70-200 II rocks.  It is very sad that we will not have that option on the new 24-70.  I am very dissappointed.  VERY!!!!!   >:(

All I need is a 24-70mm L II with IS.  Not interested without IS.  The new IS in the 70-200mm L II just knocks every (almost) shot out of the park!!  Please Canon, please.

Software & Accessories / Re: Lightroom 4 Beta now available
« on: January 23, 2012, 10:41:27 AM »
Thank you Mt. Spokane.  Should I download the V4 Beta and use V3 books and tutorials or just use V3 with the appropriate study materials?  Not sure how much difference there is between V3 and V4?  I would need to buy V3 or download the trial version (not sure how much I can learn in 30 days).

Dumb question - Can you save a processed RAW (Canon 7D) image in Lightroom as a TIFF or JPEG for sharing with others or web posting?

And I have PSE 8 but I have never used it or even read chapter 1 of the book I bought.  My question is, do you even need PSE if you use Lightroom?

Many thanks for all your help.  Carl

I'd borrow a book on LR 3, books on LR 4 are not available.  However, you can download a trial version of LR3 and test it.

LR 4 does not work significantly different from LR 3, but the edit controls have changed quite a bit, and soft proofing, book creation, and lots of minor changes have occurred.  Using the beta LR4 is fine for a experienced LR user, but  for a new user, I'd hold back.  There are bugs, and they might discourage you from using what will be a fine product once the actual release happens.

In lightroom, the process of saving a file to a different format is called exporting.  You can export a edited copy to tiff, dng, jpg, and other common formats.  The original RAW file is unchanged, you are making a separate file with your edits baked in to the file.

If you already have tiff, dng, jpeg, etc.  You can edit those files in lightroom, but cannot convert them back to CR2.  CR2 files are basically Tiff formatted images with a bunch of extra information added in.

Yes, LR can edit a tiff , jpg, dng, and other formats.

PSE 8 may do some things that LR cannot do, however, I have photoshop CS5 and only use it occasionally for doing some things that LR cannot do.  There are a ton of things you can do in photoshop and not in Lightroom, but they are not commonly used features for most photo editing.  LR can be looked at as a subset of photoshop features plus additional ones intended for editing photographs, while PS has a much broader application.

Thank you again Mt. Spokane, your advice is very helpful and appreciated.  I will order LR3 and the Adobe LR learning manual today.  Stay tuned for more of "beginner" questions!!

Anyone have any info on the release date (or estimate) for the final version?  And is LR4 a good place to start for a new user of post processing software who is actually just starting with RAW?  I have always used JPEG with my 7D and counted on getting it as good as possible in the camera, has not always worked!

I feel I must jump in here re: the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS Mk II.  I rented one from LensRentals back in Sept, 2011.  I enjoyed using it and got some pretty good results.  Then over Christmas I rented the EF-S 17-55 F2.8.  Great lens (super IQ and color) but I felt the range was a little short for me eveen on a 7D.

So I went back to my old stand by, EF  24-105 and realized the f4.0 wasn't what I need for low light indoors.  Over Christmas I saw the great price on the 70-200 F2.8 IS Mk II offered by B&H and "I PULLED THE TRIGGER."   I am glad I did, no I am REALLY glad I did.  It is fantastic and the more I use it and learn from using it, the happier I am and have not looked back a second on the cost.

Remember this, Canon L glass will hold its value for years and the results you get while owning it help you forget the price.  Good luck and give the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS MkII a STRONG second look.  BTW, I own a Sigma 50mm F1.4 and happy with it.  But I will always rely on Canon for my zoom lenses with IS.

Lenses / Re: How do I determine if the IS is working on my 24-105L??

Thanks Mt. Spokane, I will try your suggestion for testing the IS on the 24-105.  Just hate to take the BEAST (loving nickname I gave my new 70-200) off my camera!!!

Lenses / How do I determine if the IS is working on my 24-105L??
« on: January 06, 2012, 04:29:29 PM »
I have just assumed it was working until yesterday when my new 70-200mm II arrived and I put it on my 7D.  WOW, my photos were great, even down to 1/60th of a sec at 200mm.  I have always experienced camera shake with my 24-105 and I admit that I am not a steady hand (age issue I guess) and have tried to keep my shutter speed equal to the focal length or faster.  Sometimes hard in low light and aminimum aperture of 4.0.  Guess you never know what you are missing in life until you get a new wife!!!  ;)

Lenses / Re: Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM....are they any good?
« on: December 06, 2011, 05:46:31 PM »
I have the Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM on a Canon 7D and love it.  A little more expensive than the Canon f1.4 but it is built like a tank.  Great balance on a 7D, fast and accurate focus for me.  I would buy another one if anything happens to this one.  I am still learning some of the vast capabilities of this lens but it just kills low light challenges.  Also own a Canon 24-105 and 10-22.  Just waiting for the new 24-70 (if it has IS I will purchase).  Also rented the new (II) Canon 70-200 and it is on my wish list right behind the 24-70.

I should note that I never used the Canon f1.4, just went with the Sigma f1.4 based on reviews and I don't regret it for a second.  It will be on my 7D throughout Christmas.   :)
