This is the answer I got from the Olympics: :'(

Thank you for contacting London 2012 about your query.

Spectators will be free to take photographs inside London 2012 venues, however flash photography may be restricted at some events.

LOCOG has yet to finalise the spectator filming and photography guidelines. As with other large sporting events there may be restrictions for spectators on the size of lenses permitted into venues. We are working on guidelines and will publish them in good time for the 2012 Games so everyone attending is clear on the policy and can enjoy the events.

Kind regards,

Atiqul

This thread made me email the organizers of the London Olympics to check on their rules..... I was lucky enough to get tickets to a couple of events and will be seriously annoyed if they won't let me bring my camera....

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Why canon?
« on: January 19, 2012, 11:13:24 AM »
I honestly can't remember why I bought an AE1-P rather than a different SLR - I was 11 or 12 at the time and got it second-hand with the proceeds of singing in a church choir... I got all my family into Canon - both brothers and my father subsequently bought A1s.
I then went away from Canon for quite a while - mostly because the way I make money from photos can often rely on other people taking the photo (of me doing a procedure) - and I moved very early to digital and P&S (this was accompanied by scanning in hundreds of slides to use them in powerpoint). My most successful P&S was an HP850 - surprisingly good IQ straight out of the camera.
Came back to Canon when I wanted more from my camera for the increasing number of fun (i.e. non-earning) photos.... just wasn't happy with the IQ (or autofocus ironically enough) of my last semi-P&S (a Fuji s9600). Spent a long time trying to decide between Canon and Nikon - the lenses and the familiarity with the language of the lenses won it for me.... so I am now a proud owner of a 5D2 and saving up for more lenses....
Only problem is I now have to get other people to use the 5D2 well for the photos that I used to justify its purchase.....  :-\

What on earth makes you think I gave bad karma - I certainly didn't!
I would never smite someone for a photo I didn't like - I am over 12! (by a few decades....)

I would only give out bad Karma for unprovoked Ad Hominem attacks - like the one you just did on me (except I will be restrained in this case....)

I would appreciate thoughts on post-processing options for this (or indeed composition)....
I played a lot with it - and didn't find anything I preferred to the straight out of the camera jpeg
On the original its sharp - you can see the mechanism of the bell on the bell tower at 100%

With a little help from Brother Adobe
I actually preferred the first rendition of the flag. The washed out red/pink seemed to go better with the tattiness of the flag - more than the red of the second version....

Lenses / New official Canon iOS App from Canon Singapore detailing Lenses
« on: January 03, 2012, 05:59:41 AM »
For those of you with iPhones / iPads - Canon Singapore released an App on 22 Dec 2011 detailing all the currently available Canon Lenses. It has nice features like Depth of Field calculations etc.
Despite being from Canon Singapore, it appears to be available worldwide (I think?)

Software & Accessories / Re: Is it worth updating 5D2 to 2.1.1 firmware?
« on: January 02, 2012, 10:59:11 AM »
Thank you to everyone - I guess I'll buy a CF reader (those Dutch misspellings drive me mad  :)) ). They are pretty cheap.
(Not sure I trust the PCs at work.... I wish Canon would update its software for OsX 10.7)

Software & Accessories / Is it worth updating 5D2 to 2.1.1 firmware?
« on: January 02, 2012, 04:35:35 AM »
I have a new 5D2 which has 2.0.9 firmware. My MacBook has OsX 10.7.2 on it - so EOS Utility doesn't work. Is it worth me buying an external compact flash reader solely to update to 2.1.1?
(or is there another way to update without a CF reader?)
Thanks

Software & Accessories / Re: Airtravel experts

Consider Dublin - fairly small nice airport. Aerlingus allow 10kg hand luggage plus other small items such as cameras etc...
23kg for checked baggage. As long as you are close enough, I have never had any hassle...
The best thing about Dublin is going to the USA - you go through US immigration and customs in Dublin - and land at the domestic terminal with no delays (especially helpful if you are not a US citizen).
If you do use Dublin, don't use Ryanair for onward travel - they are terrible about both checked and carry-on luggage.

3 shots of Edinburgh at night (and Christmas) with the 24-105 on a 5D2
All were handheld at f4 and ISO 400 - no post processing, except a small crop on the castle

Thank you very much for all the advice - will try all of these and report back.

I am only just back in the Canon fold - when last using Canon cameras, I bought the 199A new....
(I did borrow a Powershot G6 for a few weeks in 2007 when my then camera was in for repair, but hated it)

Thanks again

Lighting / Tips for using Speedlite 199A
« on: December 25, 2011, 04:47:01 PM »
Got a 5D2 with the 24-105 L for Xmas  :)
Any tips for getting it to work with the Speedlite 199A?

In the few shots I have taken so far, it seems easy to overexpose with the flash (so far just mounted on the camera)
Even with the supplied diffuser, flash set to "red", bounced off the ceiling - I am struggling to find settings that work
The best I have found so far is manual 1/60 f7.1 ish - however, it is a bit hit and miss and I have missed a couple of shots of Christmas present unwrapping....

Obviously the best solution is to buy a new flash... but until the coffers are replenished, any tips on making this fairly ancient flash play nicely with the wonderful 5D2?

Thanks

EOS Bodies / Re: Do I need a better camera or a better pair of hands?

I prefer your photos to all but one of the "other guys" shots.
The golf shot is very cool - but that is composition - not camera equipment
Your colors and punch are great!
