EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Canon C100 praise & annoyances

Fimmakers shoot with film cameras, videographers shoot with video cameras. The C100 is a video camera, not a film camera.

Lenses / Re: 300MM lens advice

We shoot with the 300mm f4L IS and love them. I'm waiting on the 400mm f4L IS to come out and possibly upgrade, the question is, when will it come out. I've often wondered how different the 300 f2.8 is and would we be happy with them instead of waiting. Oh, the decisions, the decisions... Good post though, sorry about your Mom's passing. I sure miss mine.

I wasn't one of the 2 lucky stiffs that won the lottery last night.  :(

I won't forget ya. Imagine the freedom to buy all the camera gear you want and having the free time to shoot the world. Damn.  8)

As you all can also see, I don't know how to put previous quotes into boxes on my replys.  :-[

Thanks rpt, I had realized my question didn't make sense after I wrote it. I wasn't thinking clearly about the setup. I guess my mind was on the 400 million+ dollar powerball lottery being picked tonight.  :)  Just the target has to be said feet away, camera and computer can be close and tethered. sorry

Yup, the camera is tethered to the computer for FoCal. It's fully automated for Canon as far as I can tell; for my Nikon I have to manually set the AFMA for each shot and tell the software to take the photo... much more inconvenient.

In order to use the FoCal software, the camera HAS to be tethered to a computer? Then how are people like Neuro calibrating a 600mm lens at lengths up to 98 feet? Is this a USB cable? Please advise, thank you.

EOS Bodies / Re: First Round of EOS 7D Mark II Specs [CR1]

I don't see how firmware would improve high-ISO noise, which is mostly dependent on the quantum efficiency of the sensor and the transmittance of the Bayer dyes.  You might be able to do some calibration tricks and dark-frame subtraction to help with fixed pattern noise, but there's just not much else you could do, other than applying noise reduction to the raw images which we generally don't like.

Wow. This is why I like to read and ask questions here. I learn a lot. Thanks Lee Jay.

Well, I am assuming everyone updated to 2.0, then got furious when they released 2.0.3, leaving us to wonder what was done in 2.0, then added to 2.0.3. Once the dust settled on that, I personally think the imaging improved, but the ISO noise could have been improved(IMHO). Now with the rumour of a 7D MK2 on the horizon, everyone is complaining about the poor ISO noise of the 7D. So I guess they didn't improve it, even though they could have, right?

Does anyone think the ISO performance in the 7D could have been improved in a firmware update?

As for hybrid IS, Its really only useful at 1:1 or near 1:1 focusing distances. Perfect for macro lenses

Thank you for educating me on that feature.

Why the hype? We're all enjoying all the great features and improvments that the highly publicized 7D firmware upgrades did for us, right? Who needs a new 7D?  :D

Um, yes this is a great lens. Been out a couple years now. Why a review now? And if it has Hybrid IS, why doesn't Canon use Hybrid IS on all their IS lenses?

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Shooting in B/W
« on: November 20, 2012, 05:20:04 PM »
Well, I'm still at work, so I don't have my 7D handy, but I did just look at the manual online and there is no definition of what the B/W ISO setting is. I can only remember my 40D, that when I intentionally wanted to shoot stills in mono, the camera defaulted to jpeg format, but I cannot remember if the ISO was pre-set too. I know the OP wants to shoot video in mono and now he/she has me wondering. Of course by now, they could have done it and posted the results here to clear the air.

Neuro, thanks for the hood tip. Sorry I couldn't keep the thread going today. We're not bringing monopods with us, just the tripod rigs. I also wonder now if the firmware that was released in August will be incorporated in our rentals. If not, we'll persevere. Hell, just having the $10,500 lenses on our 7D's will be incentive enough to find something of interest! Maybe we'll bring back some images to share here with ya'll. Thanks again fellow Canon shooters.
