EOS-M / Re: Micro four DoF and lenses
« on: January 19, 2013, 07:15:20 PM »
This thread should not be under EOS-M but anyway

The one down side of the m4/3rd systems is you'll never get the shallow DOF you can with full frame cameras, or even APS-C for that matter. The fastest lenses made right now are f/1.7, and that would be equal to about f/3.5 on a full frame camera. The idea of getting anywhere close to the DOF you have with f/1.2, or even f/2.0, on a full frame camera is just not going to happen.

But then there is this fellow:

I have neither seen JR around for some time now. It seems he was last active November 6. Has anyone heard of him?

If I had to guess, something is not turned off...

Here's one I just did, sharpness looks the same (full image and 100% crop below).  In DxO, I used the No Corrections preset.  In DPP, I set all the sliders for sharpness/unsharp mask, NR, etc., to zero (or 100, in the case of saturation).  There's no 'none' option for Picture Style, I used Neutral, but that's still a style, and that's why the colors are flatter in the DPP conversion.  If anything, it looks like DPP's Neutral style is reducing the contrast slightly.

Verified that the results are almost identical - must have overlooked some setting. Thanks again Neuro!!

Canon General / Re: Canon Experience Stores Coming Soon [CR3]

umm, that would be because at least 3 people in each thread are annoyed with Canon gear being priced above the competition. ;D Sorry, just couldn't resist!

On a separate note, I think Canon is looking into a brand re-positioning a la Apple and Leica and that would be unfortunate for those of us who purchased Canon gear considering their market position as it was...

Following Apple and Leica? Second step after pricing in their direction...

A bit of exchange rate info:

1 € was in average 102.6 JPY in 2012. 2013 YTD average is 114.7 which is app 11% higher.
1 US$ was in average 79.8 JPY in 2012. 2013 YTD average is 87.4 which is app 9.5% higher.
1 £ was in average 126.5 JPY in 2012 and 2013 YTD average is 141 which, again, is app 11% higher (

If the trend holds, do we see the Canon prices drop or remain at the same levels? Any experiences from the past?

Hi guys,

Below is a raw comparison from DPP and DXO with all corrections off - 100% from an image I took uneasily a few days ago due to wild boars and  hunters close by. I am sure many have done similar comparisons. Why would DxO show a softer image?

A bit off topic but, I imagine X-S2 (?) will be getting the same sensor as the X 20 sooner or later. Does anyone have any first hand experience on how the X-S1 lens performance is?

I was considering the x-e1 as a carry-around cam but x20 attracts my attention a bit more now for that purpose.

The 6x6 pattern and absence of an AA filter should be the differences on the X-Trans. I recall reading the aps-c sensor in x-pro 1 and x-e1 was a derivate of the one found in D7000 and K5 (sorry, cannot recall the source). It seems to have good DR and high ISO performance, also seem to  generate relatively little chroma noise.

If I am not wrong, comparisons to other sensors have been a bit problematic so far as raw files from x-trans sensors were either converted in cam or came from silkypix. Capture One should be supporting the raw shortly so it will be  interesting to see more controlled comparisons...

Note: There doesn't seem to be anything illegal about the *download* since you just need to have an Adobe ID and Adobe nowhere says you shouldn't, it's about the *usage* afterwards.

True...  The reference is to Adobe's own site. Surprising miss on their side if this was not meant to be a "giveaway"...

The 7d is a relatively new port, I don't know about stability (unified is rock stable for 5d2, 60d, ...) - the place to have a look is in their forum.

First 7D alpha release was not too long ago if I am not mistaken so it's indeed a good idea to check the forums:
