Canon General / Re: Is it just me, or....
« on: February 01, 2012, 01:56:40 PM »
Hey, wait...I just realized...in that thread showing pictures of the 'new 5DIII' on Safari in Africa, there seem to be two different cameras there.  Has anyone else noticed that?   ::)

My impression is we got many more new posters after the safari affair. If I am not mistaken only 1/3-1/4 of the members actually post anything at all though (wonder if the hiding members are the secret smiters)  ;D

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 60d unavailable on BH and Adorama
« on: January 31, 2012, 05:10:40 PM »
60D reappeared in some online stores in Europe after being out of stock for 2 months or so...

Edit: just saw that it had become available on  B&H 2 weeks ago as well so below was accurate:

From information i received from Canon (through a 3rd party), the 60D's production was affected by the Thailand floods. The camera is assembled in Japan, but some stuff inside the camera was of Thai origin.

EOS Bodies / Re: From NL: Wait for 5D3 could be longer

If they wait that long, I probably loose patience and buy a kawasaki jetski with all the photo budget I have
(just providing incentive to Canon to hurry up)  :P

I used to have a Tokina 12-24 f/4 - CA and flare are known issues with it  but the lens was a pleasure to shoot with... Perhaps it's a build-quality effect :)

Also, Sigma is the only option that can be used on FF, isn't it?

Is there any generally accepted source for annual DSLR sales by brand?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: The best ways to (not) get your gear stolen

Is stolen camera gear really a big issue?  I've been worried about it as well as I'm going Europe (the land of theft) next week for a whole month.  I don't have any whites but i do have a L lens...

I live in Europe (the continent) for 50 years and my gear (includes also L lenses) was never stolen. It is not an issue - just take care of your property as you would do in any other continent

22MP is really horrifying news. I will not buy that. Compared to my mk2 I need higher dynamic range, better high ISO performance and higher resolution. I think 48 MP would have been a good choice. Perhaps I will have to consider to switch to D800 if it is really 36MP.
I have no understanding what so ever for those who wants better dynamics and ISO performance but not higher resolution when it's clearly better with the better dynamics, ISO performance AND higher resolution. You must be stupid if you want 2 of 3 improvements instead of all 3.

The specification also doesn't make sense. I don't see the market segment between 1DX and 7D. What we need is high resolution, high dynamic range, high ISO performance and no banding. Of couse also improved AF compared to mk2. High speed isn't important since that area is covered by 1DX and 7D. Anyway with 48MP (or 36MP) there would have been possible to make a crop mode with higher speed.

I believe better DR and ISO performance are preferred by many considering higher resolution generally deteriorates ISO performance (keeping the sensor size the same with higher resolution causing higher noise). Basicly "if we can have two, those should be the two" kind of statement IMO. Especially if bigger prints are not needed... Thus I do not see anything stupid about that...

Lenses / Re: All primes... But what zoom?
« on: January 29, 2012, 08:47:13 AM »
I will also say 24-105L looking at the primes mentioned. If possible, combining it with a 70-200L or a 70-300L does make life easier IMO... :)

Lenses / Re: EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro vs. EF-S 60 f/2.8 Macro ?
« on: January 28, 2012, 11:36:25 AM »
I went with 100mm non-IS basicly because I use tripod for any macro shots and 100mm allows more working distance from the object for the same magnification.  Happy with it's sharpness but as Kernuak put it very accurately, these are macro lenses sharpness is usually not an issue with them.

My thought was, if I used 60mm,  I would probably need to shoot handheld macro more frequently... Potential for camera-shake and macro?.. Maybe works better for someone with a "surgeon hand" :)

Just my thoughts...

I do think the camera will be announced well before the 1D X ships.

Whatever the 5DIII brings in terms of specs, I really hope this turns to be true.  It would eliminate a lot of uncertainty/risk over purchase of a 1D X.

This is exactly why I believe the new 5 series camera will be announced before 1Dx starts shipping.

Ironically, that's sort of why I think they won't, or if they do, it won't come close to the rumored spec list.  I can buy a 1D X...if they announce a 5DIII with more MP than the 1D X, same AF as the 1D X, nearly the frame rate of the 7D, and at half the cost of a 1D X, I would quite possibly buy the 5DIII instead, meaning less ¥ for Canon.  To me, that doesn't make fiscal sense for Canon...

I am hopeful that Canon will not come with "crippled" models for market segmentation purposes but a mk 3 above 7 fps and 61 point AF costing more? I do not think they would have gone out with 1D X in the first place if mk3 specs were planned like that...

EOS Bodies / Re: The Canon 5D line and AF...
« on: January 26, 2012, 05:39:45 PM »
Hello all,

Even though product crippling is a common way of market segmentation in the markets where there are huge amount of customers and only a few suppliers, it takes only one of the suppliers to "do otherwise" to change the rule of the game. Now DSLR market has an investment piece in it due to the interchangeable lenses which would slow down any change (yes, there are other marketing terms that could be added in favour of the slow down but change it would be nevertheless).

I think we should also keep in mind that Sony and Panasonic have a lot of experience in this kind of markets - probably more than the other players in the DSLR market. I would not be surprised if they are just trying to close the tech gap in different areas and waiting for the "opportune moment" to take the lead. With that in mind, it would make sense for the usual DSLR players to play on the confidence of their customers, basicly, because that confidence might provide some additional time before people change brands and mean survival in the market ultimately.

Thus, I am hopeful about less crippled models in the near future. After all, didn't Canon state they would change the market segmentation this year?

Just my thoughts...

EOS Bodies / Re: Announcement Date? [CR1]

I can say this, though - if they release a 5DIII with 22 MP and a “pro level” AF system (e.g. recycle the 1DsIII AF), leaving the main differentator from the 1D X as the frame rate (still 4 fps, even), I'd be quite interested - perhaps enough to get the 5DIII instead of the 1D X.  Don't worry, Canon  ::)  the money saved will go toward lenses....

Beginning to sound like a 1Ds4 in a small body ....  8) 8) 8)

Yes please! That is the camera I am looking for.  8)
