Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II Has Made its Way To Retailers
« on: September 11, 2012, 11:10:11 PM »
(As posted on another thread) The 5D3 w/24-70mm in a kit is also shipping (in Australia at least).

Is this something only done in Australia?  That would be great if it came to the US :)

Wow!  Is there any benefit to buying primes in this range?  Aside from the larger aperture for more light when you need it?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: $2,700 5D III?!?
« on: August 25, 2012, 07:12:10 PM »
I've kept my eye on this seller for a couple of weeks.  The price has fallen over time till the $2700 I saw today.  Now it's saying it's sold out, so I am guessing the remaining few models they had sold at an extremely reduced price.

Saw this posted on DPReview today in their forums.  The seller has good feedback, however the warranty looks like it could be an issue.  It says Canon USA warranty at one point in the description, yet in another part it says no manufactured warranty.  Are they even making money off of these?

Its possible, I bought mine for Evil Bay for 3099$. USA Retail, Non-grey market, never opened.

That is an excellent price!  How do you know it's a USA retail and you have your warranty?

Canon General / Re: Adorama issues anyone? Ever try to return a product?
« on: August 15, 2012, 10:23:25 PM »
My first purchase from them was some Canon 8 x 10 Semi-Gloss Photo Paper.  The photo paper was bent in half to fit in my mailbox.  This was not Adorama's fault!  However, I contacted their customer service via email and they responded (within 20 minutes) that they were sorry to hear about the poor handling of the mail carrier and they the would either refund the item or could send out another.  I was worried that if they sent out another that the mail carrier (USPS) would fold the package again to make it fit.  I told them it was up to them as I didn't want to see them lose more product based upon the mail carriers handling.  They told me they would mail it out, but this time with UPS.  I received my new package of photo paper 3 days later.

I will definitely be buying future photography equipment front them :)

EOS Bodies / Re: Another Spec List for the Entry Level Full Frame EOS
« on: July 25, 2012, 09:50:55 PM »
I think I started the $2500 thing - here is my thinking.  It would seem unlikely that Canon would sell a 'better' camera than the 5dMKII for less money.  We haven't seen any direct successors coming out cheaper than their replacements in quite a while.

Well, this camera would not be the direct successor to the 5dmkII, so it is entirely feasible that it would come out at a lower price.

The one thing I think would be missing on a cheap FF at this price point is build quality - it would still be good, but not at the same level as the 7D. After all, not even the 5dmkII has the same weather sealing as the 7D.

I'd be perfectly happy with a 1Dx sensor in a body with 60D build quality, if it came in under $2000.

Yep, I'll take that beastly sensor from the 1DX, even if the max ISO is neutered :)

If this camera has the same 18mp sensor as the 1DX, would the image quality be the same?  Or does the dual processor in the 1DX make for a better image?  I'm curious about RAW performance here.  If it is the same sensor as the 1DX and the IQ is the same, then would this new full frame have better IQ than the new 5D.

The processor does not (should not, at any rate) affect RAW IQ.  But, that doesn't mean they'll have the same IQ.  Firmware does play a role in RAW IQ, and Canon could handicap a new FF camera with the 1D X's sensor in some way (not that I'm cynically suggesting that).  One example, the spec list says the sensor may be 18 MP and the max ISO is 51200, which is two stops shy of where the 1D X goes.

Thanks for replying.  In the case of the capped ISO, would the ISO range of 100-51,2000 be the same as the 1DX's ISO 100-51,200 range?  Or would they scale the Image quality toward 51,200 on this new full frame to be the same as the 1DX's 200k.  I suppose this is all speculation.  However, it would be nice to see the same physical sensor in this new body, even if it has a lowered max ISO.

I am currently saving for the 5D Mk. III, however, I would gladly get this if the IQ is similar.  I mainly do portrait photography and would be happy with the AF system described here among the other rumored specs.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Film Camera & Film Recommendations

EOS 3 is what I think I'll get.  Thanks for everyone's input.  A 1V sounds great, but I think the EOS has enough at the right price point :)  Thank you again for your input.

Thanks for the feedback so far!  I really appreciate it.  It looks like the 1V and EOS 3 were some of the latest generation film cameras from the Canon film days.  I'll check these out :)

If you don't mind a completely off the wall suggestion compared to what you initially posted...  I'd go for Medium Format.

"Which 6x6 camera is best? If you're rich and strong, I like the Rollei 6008 single-lens reflex system. If you are traveling and want something light, the Mamiya 6 rangefinder system is wonderful. If you're poor, you might consider a twin-lens reflex such as the Yashica 124 or Mamiya."
http://photo.net/equipment/medium-format/choosing#choice

If that suggestion isn't helpful, my apologies, I'm also searching for an article I read a few months ago to help answer your actual question.  But I'd recommend either spending more time with digital post production editing, or go into a format of film that would likely be simply unaffordable in today's digital market without a lot of DIY knowledge.  Also if you aren't planning to develop the film or at least the prints yourself this seems like an utter waste of time in the 35mm format, the idea that digital hasn't surpassed 35mm film yet (a notion that was brought up in a post on this forum not to long ago) is basically laughable and anyone who really believes this simply needs to learn more about digital photo editing, like it or not (and failing that effort, a simple collection of digital filters or color correction actions can and will quickly mimic any stylistic qualities, like muted color tones, etc., that those photographers are 'accidentally' or 'for free' getting with film that they like so much, i.e. it's a simple task to reproduce such filmic qualities in digital if you know what you are doing.

If you want to go into the developing process of traditional photography, that makes a lot of sense, but again, I'd move into an affordable medium format which will help differentiate the possibilities between your 35mm digital efforts and your film interests, giving you an excited set of reasons to pursue both over the longer term.

Thank you for the suggestion.  I think I just want to try film out.  As far as my comment goes about film offering more than digital, I suppose I am just repeating what I've read in my research.  However, I know I could definitely learn more about digital editing and will continue to do so.

I would like to get my own darkroom some day.  Perhaps for now, I would have the film processed at my local photography store.  I just want to try out the film side of things, since being a younger man, did not have the opportunity to when I was younger (film was quite expensive to me when I was 12).  I thought 35mm, due to it being "full frame."  I would like to have a full frame camera some day (5DIII), however want to try it out and know film would be cheaper at the moment and just plain fun to learn/experiment with.

I should add that I would like a fairly new one.  Nothing to old.  So far I've seen the Rebel G, Elan 7, and 1D Mark V (think it was the last high end film camera that Canon made).

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Film Camera & Film Recommendations
« on: June 28, 2012, 12:31:31 PM »
As the title says, I am looking for a film camera suggestions.  I would like a Canon and one that works with my current EF lenses (50mm 1.8 and a few others).  I'm not sure what my budget is.  I know there is the 1V that I could find used for a decent price, but what do you guys recommend....

My first SLR was a Rebel T3i so i am not familiar with film based camera, however I would like to learn.  I know there are things that film can do that digital still cannot.

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to everyone's perspective on a good Canon Film Camera and their film of choice :)

EOS Bodies / Re: T3i (or T2i) to 5D Mark III

The 5D3 is more impressive than you realize.

Is this RAW or JPEG?  I know JPEG performance is better for sure, but I mainly shot RAW for it's post processing abilities.

I went from t3i to 5d3 and it is night and day. The AF, build quality, LCD, viewfinder, high ISO, button customization, wider FF shots, 1/8000 sec shutter speed, 6 fps, 23MP, HDR.... list goes on.

I do miss my swivel screen and pop-up sometimes though. Had to buy calumet wireless transmitter.
http://www.calumetphoto.com/eng/product/calumet_pro_series_2_4ghz_4_channel_wireless_trigger_kit_optimized_for_nikon_flash_systems/cf0094

There are things no one is discussing. The viewfinder is 1.6x bigger and brighter. The button customization is amazing. Now I can change ISO, aperture, & shutter speed so much more easily. It makes manual mode much easier to use. T3i is max 1/4000th second. So on bright days, you might not be able to open up to f/1.2 on your 50L.

ISO 800 on the t3i is like 25000 on 5d3

I can literally hear your excitement as you describe your new camera!!  It is making me want to upgrade even more from my T3i.  I do have one question for you.  Are you saying the ISO 800 is about the same as 25000 in JPEG or RAW?
