EOS Bodies / Re: For those interested in 7D2
« on: May 16, 2012, 12:58:23 PM »
The 7D has a better build quality and sealings than the 5DII and equal to the 5D3 and 1Dx.

Ummm...no.  The 7D has better build quality and sealings than the 5DII and equal to the 5DIII - that part is true.  The 1D X is a substantial step up in both build quality and weather sealing.  The ranking is 1-series >> 7D = 5DIII > 5DII = 50D/60D.

Hard to say exactly given the production 1Dx isn't even out yet, no?  What is going to be different in the 1Dx from the 5D3 sealing-wise?...because my 5D3 is exactly the same as my 7D in terms of housing (from what I can see/touch at least)

I've had the opportunity to play with the 1DC (essentially a 1DX) and it feels substantially beefier than the 7D.

I'd have no qualms about using a 1DC as a blunt object to fend off thieves. I'd be a little hesitant to do so using a 7D. But then again, there are plenty of DigitalRev videos that show just how durable a DSLR can be.....

I for one would like to see Canon take this approach:

Rebel T4i - takes the AF system of the XXD system (all 9 cross type). I don't really care if they up the megapixel count or not.

Canon 70D - takes the AF system of the 7D (19 cross type). I would prefer they not up the megapixel count and keep it at 18mp. Keep the 18mp and use a Digic 5 processor. Keep the same 8fps or increase it to 8.5 like the old 1dmk2. This would reestablish the position of the XXD line as a semi-pro series rather than a prosumer.

Sure the 7D was a great camera, but it really messed up their lineup imo.

There was no card in the camera, so I couldn't record with it.

But the LCD screen looks fantastic. I was messed around with the 50, but was kind of confused with how it worked so I'm not the best person to ask.

I played more with the 1DC that wasn't mounted on a tripod, which had regular EF lenses attached. I'm not that interested in the film aspect so I played with this one instead. I figured it's basically a 1DX with 4K video so it was as close to the 1DX as I was going to get!

If my memory serves right, this may be the rig that Shane used to film The Ticket.
There were 3 rigs in the room--2 with a 1DC and 1 with a c300.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Hands-on Experience with the 1DC

I went to Canon CPS event in Los Angeles today. Just got back and I had to get these photos/video up.

As a photographer, I was much more interested in playing with the 1DC. So while everybody was in another room in a Q&A Session with Shane Hurlbut, I snuck off to play with this bad boy.

I was able to get hands-on experience with this monster for about an hour. It was just me, the Canon Rep, and a bunch of lenses in the room :D

Check out all of those options for video res/frame rate :D

The camera itself felt great in my hands. I thought it would be really heavy, but I didn't find the weight cumbersome at all. It felt really balanced and fit my big hands perfectly. I probably could have snuck in a CF card since there were times where the Canon rep wasn't paying attention (I had access to it as if it was my own).

Here is a video of the manic 12fps!

Lenses / Re: Patent: Canon 17-40 f/2.8-4L

If this puppy comes out it will be hard for me not to sell my perfect 17-40 f/4L for this

The 17-40mm is far from perfect. I suggest learning to read an MFT chart as the first step, and then having a good look at the corners of your shots at f/4.

why be condescending? The 17-40L is capable of taking stunning photo's, what else is necessary?

+1
MTF charts aren't everything. If you're happy with the photos that it produces, then it is perfect your tastes.

EOS Bodies / Re: What will be the response to the D3200?
« on: April 21, 2012, 03:19:04 PM »
I thought that some of the rumors mentioned the t4i having over 20 mp.

Personally, I would love if the t4i/70D used the same 18mp sensor with a Digic 5 processor.

The noise level is already good on the 60d/t3i with a digic 4 so it will only get better with a digic 5

Pick a camera.
Love it.
Use it.

And also, it is Sony that is beating Canon in sensor tech. Not Nikon.

Lenses / Re: 100L vs 70-200L II for portraits
« on: April 18, 2012, 02:46:45 PM »
I'm trying to justify using my 100L as a dedicated portrait lens.

And I'm training myself to using the 70-200 for sports and wildlife so that both lens get a lot of use. I wouldn't have this issue if Canon didn't tempt me with that rebate =/

Although maybe if I had a second body this wouldn't be an issue for me at all :D

I nearly exited out of the thread the moment I saw the d800 mentioned.

Lenses / 100L vs 70-200L II for portraits
« on: April 17, 2012, 04:07:15 PM »
For those of you who have both lenses like I do, which do you prefer for portraits?

I love the 100L dearly, for it was my first L lens. I love its uses for macro/portraits and how ridiculously sharp it is. It was always mounted on my camera since the day I got it. I bought it mainly for macro and portraits. None of my other lenses came even close...

That is until I purchased the 70-200 II. I wasn't really shopping around for this lens, but I had to jump on the sale that Canon had last Christmas. Obviously this was my go-to lens shooting collegiate sports. The lens is as sharp as a prime and extremely versatile. My macro was suitable for indoor sports like volleyball and basketball, but the 70-200 is more useful and I got a lot more shots out of it.

However, I am torn between the two lenses for portraits. Obviously clients would be more impressed with the 70-200 II thanks to its size and color. The 100L looks much less imposing, but is tack sharp and produces creamy smooth bokeh. I love using the prime because it draws less attention and I love moving around to frame my shots. The 70-200 II is so sharp and versatile that my 100L is really only being used for macros =[

Again, my question is which lens would you choose for portraits? Is there a benefit to using the 100L over the 70-200?

Lenses / Re: 100 L Macro rattle???? Is this normal???

I know that the hybrid IS is relatively louder compared to others due to the gyroscope inside or something like that.

But if the sound occurs when you're picking up the camera when it is off, then something may be wrong.
