Software & Accessories / Sub-$200 128GB CompactFlash Memory Cards
« on: January 13, 2014, 08:24:30 AM »
Has anyone used the following 128GB CompactFlash Memory Cards from RiData/RiTek? My sole experience with this brand is with their blank CDs and DVDs.

I learned about these really "low" cost memory cards from another forum when I asked about 128GB CF cards selling for under $200.

On the forum I was linked to this site

Not buying from them as it means import duties charges if I ship em to where I am currently at and I have found the local distributor. benchmarked the RiData 600x cards performing within a permissible range. I would assume the 1000x, 800x and 400x will be as consistent, hopefully.

- Not associated with RiData, RiTek or their resellers
- Just want to get end-user feedback for this sub-$200 128GB CompactFlash memory card from actual owners.
- Yes, I know the maxim of not "putting all your eggs in one basket". Same was said back in 2003 when 128MB (Megabyte) memory cards were $100 and 1GB cards were $1,000.
- Not spamming forums. I just want end-user feedback. There are no reviews on RiData's 400x, 800x or 1000x lines of CompactFlash memory cards.

Japan / No "Asia" Regional Board?
« on: December 24, 2013, 04:58:42 PM »
I am surprised there is no "Asia" regional board considering over 60% of Earth's human population live in Asia.

I'm not even asking for a South East Asian or Philippine board. ;)

Story behind the photo:

I arrived late in the morning at La Mesa Ecopark to take more photos of the Indigo Banded Kingfisher (IBKF) this time with my father. At the site of the IBKF we saw fellow bird photogs Steve, Professor Reuel and his cousin Speedy who told us that the IBKF has already fed and flew off elsewhere. We chatted a bit talking shop and my father left to look for other birds up the trail. 10 mins later Speedy saw an Ashy Trush (the bird photographed above) so nearing to us that I thought he misidentified it.

What I found unusual was that the Ashy Trush was so out in the open and near a well traveled dirt trail. Taking advantage of the extra light by the bird's decision to forage for earthworms out in the open we pictured the young one there. We were all pleasantly surprised that it decided to jump onto the stick with its prey. My good friend Steve got it with food in mouth, sadly I wasn't. But I did get the shot above. :)

Time was Ashy Trush were a very difficult bird to find much less photograph but thankfully with time and people being respectful to the bird they have become more accommodating to people's desire to see them in the eco park.

Would anyone know of a Mac-based utility that extracts the shutter counts of the 7D, 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III, 1D Mark IV & 1D X?

EOS Bodies / 1DX Replacement
« on: March 23, 2013, 12:48:07 PM »
To give you a brief background on my self-generated speculation the 1DX was announced on October 18, 2011, the 1D4 on October 20 2009 and the 1D3 on February 21, 2007.

This represents 24 months between the 1DX & 1D4 and 32 months between 1D4 and 1D3.

Given the data above one can reasonably expect a 1DX replacement to be announced by late October 2013 or late June 2014.

For those who may not know pro bodies and pro lenses are often announced months before a major sporting event like say FIFA World Cup that is happening next year in Brazil on Thursday, June 12 or the XXII Olympic Winter Games that is happening next year in Russia on Friday, February 7.

If the 1DX replacement is announced by late October 2013 I expect stocks to trickle in after Christmas 2013. I was able to get one of the first 1D4 bodies in late January 2010. I expect something similar this time around.

So if you have a 1D4, 5D2 and a few 7D bodies is it time to upgrade or would you just wait 9 more months?

Philippine Duck (Anas luzonica) by alabang, on Flickr

Anas luzonica is endemic to the Philippines, being recorded from all the major islands and eight smaller islands. Records since 1980 derive from c.30 localities, most on Luzon and Mindanao. Records from Siquijor and the Sulus remain unsubstantiated. A steep population decline was evident by the mid-1970s, with high numbers recorded at only a few sites in the following decade, e.g. Candaba Marsh (Luzon) which probably supported many thousands in the early 1980s. Subsequent local extinctions and near-disappearances have occurred in several significant sites, including Candaba Marsh and Buguey wetlands (where several thousand were recorded in 1983). Important current areas include Polillo Island (240 seen and an estimated 3,000 present in 1996), Subic Bay (600 seen in 1997), Magat dam (2,000 were seen in 2001) and Malasi lakes (1,320 were recorded in 2002), Luzon. Other recent records come from Mangatarem, Pangasinan (east of Zambales Mountains IBA) where 70 individuals were counted on the Barabac River inside the Manleluag Spring National Park, Cantilan mangroves in Surigao del Sur and from a mangrove fishpond in Bicol Region, Southern Luzon (B. Tabaranza in litt. 2007). In 1993, its population was estimated at 10,000-100,000, but by 2002 fewer than 10,000 birds were thought to remain.

Sports / 7th Odyssey Waves National Surfing Competition
« on: February 28, 2013, 11:29:52 AM »
The first time I photographed surfing was back in 2007 at the 4th Odyssey Waves National Surfing Competition. Photos of which can be found at the following links

Fast forward to the 7th Odyssey Waves National Surfing Competition that was held last week at Guiuan, Eastern Samar from October 6-9, 2011.

For those unfamiliar where Guiuan, Eastern Samar is located click The nearest major commercial airport is located in Tacloban City on Leyte Island. Travel distance from the airport to the surf site is 175km of which 170km is paved concrete roads. Guiuan has its own airport that would cut down road travel to 20km.

I have yet to visit other surf sites but the highlights of this place are the beautiful rock formation to the north, sandy white beaches and very few people living on the beach. Making this your private surf site.

Canon General / EF mount's obselences
« on: January 15, 2013, 02:39:57 AM »
With Canon finally making a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera makes you wonder when they will abandon SLRs all together. If I am not mistaken it took Canon 5 years to transition from FD mount to EF mount.

So what do you think? Will we be seeing our beloved gear become yesterday's news or a decades old survivor?

Software & Accessories / Lexar USB 3 Reader: Dual-Slot vs 25-in-1
« on: November 03, 2012, 04:10:47 PM »
Lexar has two USB 3 card readers the Dual-Slot (LRW307URBNA) and the 25-in-1 (LRW025URBNA).

What's the difference between the two other than the price, color and how many cards they an read?
