Lenses / Re: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 Pancake
« on: June 07, 2012, 09:36:28 AM »
When did f2.8 become slow?

When you could get f/2.8 zooms.
Most zooms never have the image quality of a prime. There a many situations, where I would trade the flexibility of a zoom, like the 17-50/55mm or the 24-70mm, for the image quality of a prime. A prime that is sharp open is better than a zoom, where you have to stop down a stop or two to get the desired image quality.

Photographers who need f/1.4 lenses to suit their shooting style will have to do what they've always done, pay the necessary dollars for those sweet, premium L primes.
Even though I tend to agree with your comment, I like to point out that both the 28mm f/1.8 USM and the 50mm f/1.4 USM are cheaper than the new F/2.8 IS USM primes and I can't believe that adding an image stabilizer can be so expensive.

On the other side, the build quality of the pancake looks much nicer than the nifty fifty, thus trading aperture for build quality might be ok for most people.

Interesting, the more I think about this lens to more I believe that canons mirror less system will be EF mount.

Does anyone believe so also?
I do... why?

First of all, right from the start of such a mirror less camera, there a tons of lenses available. The Nikon 1 system only got 4 lenses so far. The second reason is that most people think twice before investing in a new system. Having invested into the EF-System, there is less hesitation to buy a mirror less body to accompany and even backup the more professional equipment. And last but not least, an APS-C or even FF mirror less system is something to differentiate Canon from the competition... and to succeed in the market, Canon needs something to separate them from Nikon, mFT etc.

i still cant see the point of all these f2.8 primes coming out
There have been f/2.8 primes before, like the "old" 24mm f/2.8 and 28mm f/2.8. I own the 28mm since ages and it is a decent lens. Now those two lenses got replaced by new versions with IS, USM and maybe/hopefully even have a better image quality. If this is the case, at least I would consider to buy the 24mm f/2.8 IS USM.

Regarding the pancake, it's defiantly a nice looking lens. It has a metal bayonet and the finish looks and it fancies a high quality look than the faster nifty fifty. If the image quality image quality surpasses my tammy and the nifty fifty it is worth a try.

I don't see Canon's mirrorless system using the EF mount -- there's not much point removing the mirror, but keeping the space for it. This is designed to be paired with an APS-C DSLR.  The point of it is to serve as a budget compact walkaround prime. It's not fast compared to a high grade zoom, but it is fast compared to the kit zoom.
Why not? Think of the Pentax K-01: it's an APS-C mirrorless system using the Pentax K mount. And Pentax also offers a 40mm f:2.8 pancake for the K-01. Why shouldn't Canon introduce a similar - hopefully less ugly - system?

Sounds great. I planned to upgrade from my XSi to the 60D or 7D this autumn but the 70D is a temptation.

There was that 40mm pancake rumor / patent a couple months back. Who knows perhaps you'll actually come close to getting this wish granted  - stranger things have happened.   ???
If I had to choose between a 40mm 1:2.8 pancake or the 50mm 1:1.8 II, I would choose the nifty fifty.

Indeed, and Canon just wouldn't put a sensor into the 650d that can outgun the more expensive aps-c bodies. That's why they called it "650d", there will be a 70d with a sensor upgrade and *then* they'll put into a "700d".
Why not... think of the 450D (12 MP), which outgunned the 40D (12 MP). After the 450D, the 50D got a new 15 MP sensor. There is no reason why the 650D shouldn't get a new sensor, which will be later outperformed by the sensor of the 7D2.

Build quality of the 100/2 and a proper USM with FTM for less than 500 €... at least I would be happy with such a lens.

Full Frame: ...and a mirrrorless FF (we'll see).

A mirrorless entry is no mirrorless FF. I believe we will see a competitor of the Nikon 1 and like the Nikon, it will have a new bayonet mount.

Well... either we get an evolution or a revolution of the 7D.

Evolution: possibly an amalgamation of the 7D and 60D, with 19-22 Mpix, dual DIGIC V, 19 cross type AF points, 8 fps etc.

Revolution: 19-22 Mpix, dual DIGIC V, 61 AF points, 10 fps, etc.

The evolution will be priced similar to the current 7D, the revolution however, will see a similar increase in price as the 5D3, thus I expect a price somewhere around 2.500 €.

This however leaves a huge gap between the 7D2 and the T4i/650D. So, will we see a "revolution" of the 70D with the 19 point AF of the current 7D? Or will the T4i be an amalgamation of the 600D/60D?

It's time for the 650D. Don't expect the 70D before the Photokina in Cologne this autumn.

perhaps something that caters more to those who need higher resolution will be released by end of year.
The 1Dx and the 5D (III/x) are both the right cameras for the Olympics and the Euro 2012 (soccer). Later this year there is the Photokina. The right place to launch a professional high mp camera (and maybe a prosumer-grade APS-C Body).

With a price of $3500 for the next 5D I actually don't believe that the 7D will be merged with the 5D. There is still enough room for a pro-grade APS-C Camera. Maybe the next 7D (II or X) will get some of the features of the rumored 5D as well. Like dual SD- and CF-Card, 61 points AF, more fps...

Though if I was Canon I would brand a 5d like body with superior autofocus a different name other than 5D like they did with the 7d to prevent confusion and better justify the price increase. I would keep the 5d/3 line a high megapixel like the Nikon D800 but with a lackluster autofocus and improved dynamic range for studio/landscape work required for large prints.
So we get the high performance 3D (5DX) and the 5DII will be replaced in a couple of months with a slightly improved 5DIII that keeps the crappy AF, low fps and will have a lighter polycarbonate instead of the magnesium alloy construction? If the price is right (~ $1999/€1999), this might be an interesting alternative.
