EOS Bodies / Re: This should be more than a rumour

DEC computers used to have a PIN to protect the computer from booting into safe mode, booting from an alternate disk, etc, as a way to protect the computer in case someone had console access.

In case the password was forgotten, a DEC technician could take out the internal battery which supplied the memory cheap holding the password with power, and thus erase it.

Point is DEC computers weren't as steal-able as photography equipment, and it's easier to cheat service people with stories like 'about the owner having died, went on a trip to some remote location,

Lenses / Re: Canon 35mm f/2 vs Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 vs Canon f/2.8
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:25:36 PM »
I have both the Canon 35mm f/2 and Rokinon 35mm f/1.4

The Rokinon is fully manual, meaning you'll have to set both the aperture & focus by hand. If bokeh is important to you, the Canon 35mm f/2 has a nervous bokeh when linear objects are out of focus, as can be seen in the Photozone review of the lens.

June announcement = July shipping?

Considering Canon's track of late, I'm sure it would ship by July, just not this year...

Lenses / Re: DSLR Video: Canon 24mm 1.4L II vs 24mm 2.8 IS

There's a clip here -
Full Moon Rising - "High" - Official Music Video - Daniel Tyler Pohnke Small | Large
- that was shot with a couple of 5Dmk2 cameras and the following lenses:

* 50mm f/1.4 wide open, e.g. the shallow depth of field shots in the beginning of the clip. I think it gives several good and bad examples of using shallow depth of field in video.

* Sigma 12-24mm mkI, e.g. the opening shot with the trees spinning, the dance sequence at ~60secs, and the office shots right after that.

* TS-E 24mm f/3.5 mkII, e.g. at 2:30

They've also used an EF 35mm f/2 & an HD hero.

Came across this, not sure if you found it already:

Thanks! Came across some of those, but definitely not all

Please post if you have access - 14mm on FF and 16mm on FF or crop so i can see what the 2mm difference means in real live.   Also is 16mm on FF or Crop display any more or less distortion?

I have a Canon 17-40mm, and I'll try to get a Sigma 12-24mm mkII on loan from a friend.

How low a price are we talking? If it's something you can easily afford in case it's not that great, go for it. Heck, if it's $300-400 I'd probably take it, as long as the glass was clean and in good shape. Consider it an opportunity to write a full review of it for us ;)

Beside missing the accessories (sold with nothing but the caps), it's in very good condition. Glass is clean, & autofocus works. Looking w/ zoom on 5Dmk2 LCD & quick look on computer screen, photos look good.

[I make a point of keeping everything including the box, it seems a lot of used lenses are sold to shops with nothing but the caps.]

I'm buying the lens from a store, and the price is U.S.$500 + the local equivalent of sales tax. For comparison, new lenses are often sold around here for 5%-10% more than U.S. prices (before taxes).

A review? I would upload a few photos (I'm planning on nature & architecture, will consider requests)  taken w/ 5Dmk2 (anyone interested in photos taken with 600D?), and leave writing accompanying text of both the lens & my photography skills to the critics.

I have an opportunity to buy a 2nd hand Sigma 14mm for a low price. As I like ultra wide lenses, I find it attractive.

Problem is, I can't find many reviews of the lens, and those I did are from owners of film cameras, and say little beyond the lens having very low barrel distortion (at least for an ultra wide lens).

Anyone has experience with this lens, and can tell a bit more about the pros & cons of this lens?

Thanks in advance!

18MP again?. Boring.

But sufficient for many uses, esp those of xxxD series owners.

so out with the swivel LCD and in with the touch screen? replacing one gimmick by another :P

Somebody better tell Apple that their iPad is one big touch screen gimmick.  You may not have noticed, but the world is going touch screen, including Windows 8.

One of the reasons I'm not using the Kindle Fire (was given to me as a gift) is the touch screen. As example, it appears whomever designed the device didn't think of people with fingers as big as mine, so I can't type a short URL without fixing it at least three times.

As of Apple, the success of their products is no indication of quality, e.g. the brick with tiny B&W screen sold as a portable computer is a good example. If Apple put it's logo on it, the fanboys would buy petrified dog S___ as a premium air freshener.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II - Your thoughts
« on: May 16, 2012, 04:33:10 AM »
Between the 24-105mm f/4 and primes such as 35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.4, & 85mm f/1.8, I'm not really waiting for a 24-70mm f/2.8

If the 24-70mm f/2.8 would have stellar IQ, and the primes are not updated, I might dump the 35mm f/2 & my search for a goof 24mm prime, and buy it.

One of the reasons I like the 50mm f/1.4 is the low price.

What I want is improved IQ wide open, esp vignetting & higher MTF, USM (= non micro), and price under U.S.$500.

One of the reason 5D2 and 7D are used, specifically on action sequences is their size and when they are inevitably destroyed it is no great loss.

In the grand scheme of The Avengers, several demolished 5D2 is a drop in the bucket.

While several demolished Nikon HDSLRs would make a big dent in movie profits?

What major motion picture production used Nikon HDSLRs?

My point exactly.

* Most people don't want the 5d3 to have any more resolution and I'm sure Canon knows this because they will have asked
Until it comes out. Then everyone wants it.

No, it's just that those who want more MP make a lot more noise than those who don't.

Lenses / Re: Is anyone interested in the 24mm2.8IS?
« on: April 30, 2012, 07:09:57 AM »
Considering it's 1 stop faster than the 24-105mm f/4 IS I already have & the MTF charts, I don't find it attractive.

If Canon made an EF 24mm f/2 USM for a street price ~$500, I would pre-order it.
