EOS Bodies / Re: Shot wedding with 5DIII, dissapointed in AF
« on: April 02, 2012, 11:46:26 AM »
Rudy Winston, a good guy and tech expert from Canon, has an online series describing the new 5D /  1DX AF system.

It is a good article.  But nowhere does it say to stick to "single point AF" if you want fast AF.  So unfortunately it's one of those things people need to learn and then share that knowledge.  I wish it had been documented, because I would have used it last night and would have gotten more keepers from the reception.

if we had to use single point AF for the camera to focus properly to achieve a sharp image, then what's the point of putting  61 pt. AF when it will be useless other than a maketing strategy. As far as I understood, those points when selected will be the basis of the camera to focus on regardless of other settings. What's the point of having zones or expansion points if focus cannot be achieved? Does this mean we will need to use the 61 points individually?

EOS Bodies / Re: L lens for 5d MK III

Im basically going to shoot mostly portraits, street photography, landscape

135mm f/2.0L is only $1050 USD. It is considered one of the fastest and sharpest lenses you can get. It has 9 blades and delivers bokeh much like an 85L. The AF is nearly light speed. The reason you get all this is because it's 16 years old. Somehow, they hit is out of the park in 1996. Despite this, the 135L probably won't be updated anytime soon.

yes I understand your point as a matter of fact there are a lot of times that I use my 70-200mm for landscape shots and it's great but the point is we're just giving ideas to the OP on the basis of his current situation. As I understand he's asking for a versatile L-lens to cover his shooting needs which in turn is limited by a tight budget.

135 f2? yeah that's a good lens but how often will you use it on landscape shots?

I am thinking about getting the 5d Mk III even if it looks like the D800 is better on paper... I still think it remains to be seen if IQ would be better. I have used the 5D Mk II before and IQ is just superb! And Im not planning on printing billboard size pics anytime soon so I think 22MP is more than enough. I used to have a XTi and a T2i and have sold these too upgrade to a FF body. I have a EF 28-135mm and thinking about getting a L lens with the Mk III. Which L lens would you guys suggest I get. Im basically going to shoot mostly portraits, street photography, landscape probably within the budget of $1500.

with that budget, it will be very tight compared to your shooting needs. If your thinking of a single L lens to cover your shooting you've only have 2 choices considering your budget; 24-105 f4 or 24-70 f2.8 mk1. On these two lenses it's bokeh vs. extra reach & IS.
Now considering f4 on a FF, the bokeh is almost like an f2.8 on a crop sensor, if you're happy with that you can have a third option which is to get the 5d3/24-105 kit + 17-40 f4.

just sharing an idea if i was on your situation ;)

EOS Bodies / Re: First DSLR: Canon 5d MkIII or Nikon D800...
« on: March 14, 2012, 07:52:34 PM »
Now, normally I wouldn't ask this on a site that could potentially be biased...however; with all the rigamarole, spec tossing, opinions and blatant fear I am thinking people might be pretty objective with my situation. As I said this would be my first DSLR(I know, either camera is way more camera than i'll even be able to utilize before the next upgrade occurs anyways), I have NO investment thus far on any series of lenses. I was 'set' on Canon because the only two pros i know use Canon...ive had Canon p+s cameras in the past and loved them compared to any others. I already preordered a mark iii, and at the same time discovered the D800. With that being said, i'm wondering what the majority of the experienced pros here would do in my situation. Starting from scratch which direction would you veer? I intend on shooting(in order of majority of):

Landscape(time-lapse videos, the higher DR is of significant value to me, although a lot of TLs I saw done with the mkII were nothing less than phenomenal)
Outdoor/rock climbing shots
Small videos
Everyday walk around camera
The occasional wedding
And hoping to get into stock photography...

I know the D800 is supposed to be amazing for landscapes, but I don't plan on cropping much due to it being a time-lapse on a dolly...so the extra MP is more of a hindrance to me I am thinking at this point. But the DR is very attractive. The canon lens are also a big factor, although I plan on shooting a lot on Zeiss lens, so how much does that factor weigh in?

So, you're starting from scratch, and you're shooting what I will be shooting, which direction do you go?

Thanks!

For your first DSLR, I would recommend a cheap D550 or something similar with the kit lens. Get used to how a DSLR works and build your craft before going into the deep end with pro gear like the 5D3.
Nothing wrong to start from FF if OP can afford

absolutely true!!! it will actually be more economical to buy top end rather than buying a crop then upgrade later. Whatever you need get it NOW otherwise you'll miss the shots ;D

for me the deciding factor will be if you can ignore cross hatches or banding noises then go with canon as you will have vast choice of lenses. the difference between competing models are small it's just a matter of your preference. before I bought my first canon camera I was using my cousins' nikon D60 and I liked it but it was taken by a burglar so I had no choice but to buy a new camera. It was a tough one since I've wanted the D700 but after comparing canon lenses vs nikon lenses, I decided to go canon thinking that my mates are with canon as well and that I could borrow some stuff whenver I need it...I wanted a FF camera but I ended up with 50D since I've heard rumors about 5d3 (that's 3yrs. ago) and now that 5d3 is here, d800 is also here so I was waiting again for another couple of months for some reviews and hopefully hands on tests before I could decide which one.

Just a thought - I'm obviously too late to pre-order a 5D MkIII in time for my holiday, which starts on 12th April, but do retailers set some stock aside to satisfy walk-in customers (as opposed to pre-orders)?

no worries!!! for sure one (if not more) will be waiting for you at the store shelf once we get proper reviews and consumers' hands on tests we'll get to know who will switch and who will stay.

I agree.  In fact I just placed my order with http://www.leedervillecameras.com.au/ (which was recommended by simonxu11 - thanks) for the 5DIII at $AU3599 (inc GST) which I think is reasonable compared to RRP's we're seeing.  I ordered via telephone, spoke to a friendly staff member and left a $400 deposit.  They expect to have stock by the end of the month.  They also offer the 24-70II kit for an extra $2200 (if I remember correctly) and I was very tempted but I think I'll wait.  They also offered an extended Canon warranty (extra 2 years) for $199.

Edit: I've bought grey before but if I can help it I'd rather buy local.  It's no good for anyone for local businesses to go down.

Canon warranty? is it canon australia? My problem is I am buying a 5DIII which is just new and have never been used by anyone among us on a daily basis so I need to be sure where to buy it from due to warranty issue furthermore, once I get my new 5dIII, I may need to send my other camera and my lenses to the service center for a bit of cleaning and calibration

EOS Bodies / Re: buying a 5DIII overseas or local?
« on: March 05, 2012, 06:54:03 PM »

Actually, you do! You can purchase an International extended warranty at the same time. Many customers from outside the US find that even with the cost of the warranty added, they can still make a considerable saving - and have piece of mind.

thak you for the info I'll note of this as I still need some more gears.

Only difference is that the items are not imported via the official importer (i.e. canon australia) and are therefore not subject to price gouging/profiteering by the importer. Based on current exchange rates, there's an approx $1000 USD price difference b/n US and australian pricing of the 5dIII. Even taking into account taxes and potential shipping cost differentials, canon stand to make a bucketload by putting up barriers to prevent nasty grey importing (i.e. not providing warranties) and encouraging people to 'buy local'.
[/quote]

ahhh ok so the main key here is canon australia and that they wanted to monopolise destribution and deny competition.....how greedy is that?. on the marketing side where canon global has given the SRP this means all the dealers and retailers have their mark up already on that price... and they still want more!!! when I was undergoing bussiness training some years ago, I was taught to have at least 50% markup for the every product to keep up. I can just imagine how much the camera is really worth thinking that it gone through so may hands before it reaches me.

stay calm guys! I believe we're into this forum because of that one thing we have in common "our passion for photography" opening up and sharing ones' thought is such a wonderful thing despite our distances and our day to day activities in our busy lives. funny but we're here sharing thoughts and experience with one another, it's some sort of brotherhood though maybe noone ever thought it that way. for some of us a simple smile or a silent laugh or even a smite for some humor or honest opinion but we let it pass as this forum has become part of our daily lives...despite our races and distances, we need to be carefull and vigilant in everything we say as some may find a simple humor to be offending.

honestly I'm a bit confused about this grey market thing. these products are sold by well known companies so I suppose they're not illegal, we also get the same product as being sold by local big retailers with the same 1 year warranty and I believe these products are from the same manufacturer which is CANON, so what's the difference?

maybe a letter, as dilbert suggested, would be the way to go, but i really can't see it accomplishing anything.  :'(

It forces Canon Australia to acknowledge and respond to the issue.

You may get a letter back from Canon that is just rubbish (they ignore the issue or pretend that nothing is wrong) but if you do, that's the kind of letter you photograph and upload to your blog/facebook/canon rumors. That can bring about change.

Of course, they may just ignore you, but companies very rarely ignore written letters to their CEO if the letter is well constructed and is intelligent (i.e. it doesn't rant.) Why do they take them seriously? Because very few people make an effort to actually do so.
maybe we can send that sort of letter with all our signatures on it :)
