The 400/5.6 with 1.4TC and crop a little in to that awesome 5d3 and you'd be set.  But the lure of a 600/4 is tempting and sometimes you just have give in.

Still, most of my bird photography is not done on vacation but is done almost every day.  My office is within walking distance of an area that has quite a few birds and I take walks there every day during lunch.  Therefore, whichever lens I pick up will likely be used at least twice a week.

Ok, I can't imagine you taking either of these lenses to work twice a week, especially the 600/4.  I think the 400/5.6 might be lighter, add the 1.4 tc or 2.0tc and boom.  Plus you have the 70-200.

I find the AF of the 50L to be much better on my 5D3 than it was on my 50D.  What body are you using?  I have both the 1.4 and 1.2 and they are both great, but they need to be used with a little care wide open.  The 50L is amazing when you hit it, and on full frame the bokeh and what I call 3D look are unique.

The dof at f1.2 is thin, so some shots are missed because of camera or subject movement, so shoot lots!

but I really like my 24mm/1.4L. It's neat to have a wide-angle with the ability to give serious bokeh.

Yes, this is great.  Now I can turn off the options that I'll never use and never have to scroll through them again. So I have spot and single point only, single seems to be the only one you can't turn off.  Does that have to do with the grouping of lenses that I see in the manual?  Some slower lenses won't jive with spot AF?  I use the finest spot 100% of the time.

As soon as I read..."the 5d3 AF system sucks", I move on to another website (sorry Craig and your advertisers).  I don't seem to get any useful information from that comment which invariably the post started with "dude or bro".  So, please tell me why the 5d3 AF system sucks because I haven't bought the camera yet and I'd like to make an informed purchasing decision.

This picture is edit in DPP and RAW converted to JPGs editing in High Quality mode.

Canon EF 1.4x III Extender, Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM, Canon Eos 5D Mark III,

 1/1600, f9,0, ISO 1600

Nice shot, so you converted that in DPP with the factory settings, not changing them as per many threads?  I'm having great success with DPP and my 5D3 too, after a little learning curve.

I'll have to try servo mode when I get home, it was fine the other day on one shot, but I never use servo.

ef 20mm f2.0L  (or f2.8 if f2.0 would ram up the price too much) no IS, and it better have awesome bokeh, I'm talking 200/2 quality here or 24/1.4ii.

so true, so many gear nerds.  It's also crazy how people are getting 5d2/3's as a first dslr.  I just got a 5d3 after many years shooting on a crop, and going full frame is amazing.  I love my 5d

Yes, the card was formatted with the 5D3 the day I got the camera, and it had been formatted a few times after that.  Odd things do happen!

EOS Bodies / 5D3 continuous file numbers

Hi,


I have my 5d3 set to continuous file numbering and all is well (or was well).  I was up to file number 900 or so.  I plug my 5d3 in to my mac at work and I noticed that the file numbers reverted back to zero.  As I shoot now the file numbers are continuous.  I formatted the card, removed the battery and it's fine. 

I shot some more images and imported to my mac the same way again, but this time the camera kept the file numbers and did not revert back to zero.

Is it normal for this to happen?  I never affected my 50D.

I had to use image capture to get the files off my 5d3 because the EOS utility at work is not current and won't work with the new 5d3.

Curious.
