EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5DMK3 - Af question
« on: March 29, 2012, 05:02:05 PM »
Yes, this is great.  Now I can turn off the options that I'll never use and never have to scroll through them again. So I have spot and single point only, single seems to be the only one you can't turn off.  Does that have to do with the grouping of lenses that I see in the manual?  Some slower lenses won't jive with spot AF?  I use the finest spot 100% of the time.

Thanks, yes, factory settings and High Quality mode, it looks fine to me
(Sorry for my poor English )

Ironic thing is, your english is better than many native English speakers online, for example —Youtube.

As soon as I read..."the 5d3 AF system sucks", I move on to another website (sorry Craig and your advertisers).  I don't seem to get any useful information from that comment which invariably the post started with "dude or bro".  So, please tell me why the 5d3 AF system sucks because I haven't bought the camera yet and I'd like to make an informed purchasing decision.

I actually laughed out loud when I read you post, thanks! :)

Hello !

This picture is edit in DPP and RAW converted to JPGs editing in High Quality mode.

Canon EF 1.4x III Extender, Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM, Canon Eos 5D Mark III,

 1/1600, f9,0, ISO 1600

Nice shot, so you converted that in DPP with the factory settings, not changing them as per many threads?  I'm having great success with DPP and my 5D3 too, after a little learning curve.

I'll have to try servo mode when I get home, it was fine the other day on one shot, but I never use servo.

ef 20mm f2.0L  (or f2.8 if f2.0 would ram up the price too much) no IS, and it better have awesome bokeh, I'm talking 200/2 quality here or 24/1.4ii.

so true, so many gear nerds.  It's also crazy how people are getting 5d2/3's as a first dslr.  I just got a 5d3 after many years shooting on a crop, and going full frame is amazing.  I love my 5d :)

IBTL

Interesting post, but get the flame-proof suit on.  I'll agree I've learned lots from many on this forum; you just have to pick and choose what you want to read.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D3 continuous file numbers

Yes, the card was formatted with the 5D3 the day I got the camera, and it had been formatted a few times after that.  Odd things do happen!

I haven't found a issue to gripe about.

I just sent you a PM.

EOS Bodies / 5D3 continuous file numbers
« on: March 28, 2012, 04:44:41 PM »
Hi,

I have my 5d3 set to continuous file numbering and all is well (or was well).  I was up to file number 900 or so.  I plug my 5d3 in to my mac at work and I noticed that the file numbers reverted back to zero.  As I shoot now the file numbers are continuous.  I formatted the card, removed the battery and it's fine.

I shot some more images and imported to my mac the same way again, but this time the camera kept the file numbers and did not revert back to zero.

Is it normal for this to happen?  I never affected my 50D.

I had to use image capture to get the files off my 5d3 because the EOS utility at work is not current and won't work with the new 5d3.

Curious.

Hey Wombat, I'm at work and had to convert your 5d3 to DNG using the 6.7 release.   Maybe it's just me, but that DNG converter is messing up images, your 5D2 looks way better in DPP vs. your 5D3s in DNG.

Nice image.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D III focus accuracy with fast primes wide open
« on: March 27, 2012, 04:33:38 PM »
So I have a the new 5dmk3 and a 50mm 1.2L.  I have been trying to get the micro adjustment on the lens just right, but but I figured out why it had been a bit confusing up to this point.  If I use the center point (or any AF point within the metering ring) I get spot on tack sharp AF on like 90% of the shots with 0 MFA.  BUT, if I use one of the outer AF spots I get pretty bad back focusing (like +15).  I thought maybe it was the body I had, so I just went back to the camera store and exchanged it for another body hoping that I would at least be able to figure out if that was the variable.  Turns out this body is exactly the same.  This makes me think it is either difficult for the AF to get a good lock due to the aberrations of the glass the closer you get to the edge, or something wrong with the lens itself (it is brand new and date code is uz0909).  I'm also just wondering if this is the price you pay with AF on really fast glass.  That is where you come in.  If you have fast glass (1.2) try checking the AF accuracy on center point and a more lateral point and lets see if we can come to a consensus.  I'm especially interested in 50mm 1.2 as thats what I'm working with.  I tested my 70-200 2.8 and it's pretty spot on with no MFA, on both center and lateral AF points.  I'll post a few test shots of my 50 when I get home later.

My 24L and 35L are great using any focus point wide open, the 50L is a tricky lens. It performs well with the centre point, but may vary with using outer focus points.  With the 50D the 50L as all over the place.  The 5D3 seems to have tamed the 50L some.  I'm much happier with the 50L on the 5D3 vs. my (now on eBay) 50D.

Go to View then click AF Point.

Or command J.
