EOS Bodies / What is this camera?
« on: March 02, 2013, 03:41:30 AM »
I think this post is likely misplaced, but this subforum most describes what I'm asking.

I came across the following photo yesterday, and looking at it more I saw it's a Canon film SLR. I'm not as handy with the film bodies as I am the DSLRs, so I was wondering if you all could help me ID it. Just for curiosity.

Technical Support / Constantly flashing read/access light on 5D3
« on: February 18, 2013, 01:30:36 AM »
A few days ago I dropped my 5D3 from about 6 inches.

When I turned it on, the read/access light (you know the red one) wouldn't stop flashing. Well, it wouldn't stop flashing when the CF card slot was selected.

I tried turning the camera off and back on again. Nothing.

Same for taking the CF card out and putting it back in.

Same still for choosing the SD slot, doing on-off, and then choosing the CF slot again.

So, in the end I backed up my photos and reformatted the CF card.

THAT stopped the flashing. And it hasn't flashed again since, except for the times it does in normal usage.

But my question is — anyone have any idea why the light would have been flashing constantly? It didn't change anything w.r.t. functionality, i.e. the camera still took photos and could write to the card. The light simply kept flashing.

I tried researching the problem online and came up empty. The manual is equally useless.

Anyone?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D3 - problem?
« on: September 26, 2012, 06:27:49 PM »
OK. I will admit I don't know if this is a problem.

I just bought a 5D3 yesterday, and when I pulled it out of the box last night, I noticed I could not turn the mode dial. Is this a problem? Or, is it designed that it won't turn if the camera is not turned on? I did not even put a battery in the camera last night, as I'm not going to start playing with it until the weekend.

I have never had a camera where the mode dial DIDN'T turn when it's turned off, so that's why I'm asking.

Thanks.

Lenses / Tele lens for football/soccer
« on: August 29, 2012, 01:06:09 AM »
OK. So I have a relatively limited budget.

I'm looking at either a 300 or a 400 prime for shooting soccer and football.

As much as I would love the f/2.8 IS version of either, they are considerably outside my price range.

So my question is this: which would you recommend, oh more-experienced photogs: the 300 f/4 or the 400 f/5.6. We're talking the L in both cases.

And, to make matters more complicated, likely by the time I'm shooting these sports again, I will have a FF body (currently APS-C).

Alright. Have at me!

p.s. Whichever I get I will likely end up using for hockey as well. But I have the 70-200 f/2.8 for that, and that's been perfectly fine.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / AF question - 5D v. Rebel XS
« on: January 21, 2012, 04:48:25 PM »
First post.

OK, I already have an idea of what the answer I'm going to get is, but...

I currently have a Rebel XS, which I use in my job as a reporter. I am primarily a writer, and since I work for a small-town weekly, super high-quality photos are not critical. But I use it for (small town) sports on a fairly regular basis and I'm mostly content with the shots I get.

But, I'm looking to upgrade to a FF, and considering I know I don't need something as sophisticated as the 1D, that means the 5D in one of its iterations.

So, given what all your experiences are with the 5D AF, and how I've heard it's not great for sports, my question is this:
How much better is the 5D AF compared to the Rebel XS? And given that the XS has served me well for shooting sports, how happy would I be with the 5D even with its AF "problems"?

Thanks.
