There are some retailers I'd be cautious about.
Well, I buy from them over 5 years and not once I had a prob. Camera, computer gear mainly.
My 2nd 5D2 was from them for 1800 when others sold it at 2100.
Always shipped fast and time to time they have some very good deals.

2-3-4 small squares of black electrical tape always fix loose hood/cap problems.

Your "L" lenses are so good that Canon will only provide warranty for 1 year.
Tamron will provide warranty for 6 years.
This always been a big "?" for me...
I think it's not necessarily related to the quality of the Ls rather Canon's customer-ripping-procedure...
..just like the ridiculous accessory prices, such as hoods, caps, t.collars, the lack of a hood on non Ls..

About the color and contrast... only partially true.
I have a 24TS L, a 200L and a 24-70L and all have different color and contrast to each other. (I like all though..)
The resale value... well, that depends, on the lens, on the seller, on the deal you got on the first place.
I owned and sold a lot of lenses in the past years and sold almost all of them with a small profit or around 0-5% loss. If one doesn't know how, when to sell, then he/she can lose money on anything.
I was looking at a Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS for a year and even used I couldn't find it much less than the going 1250, yet the canon 70-200s were pretty low at times compared to the retail.. i.e. the new Canon f4 is $559, the f4IS 1099, the f2.8II 1999 now, (ebay completed listings shows as low as 1250-1700 for the 2.8II)
Quality and price doesn't always walk hand in hand and the latest and greatest from a 3rd party could easily beat a larger company's old design, in cases even the newer ones as part of their price is the Logo and that has not much to do creating images or a tool being great but to show off on the vacation, on a wedding, in front of friends and family
...so bottom line is ... whatever justifies our spending, right... ?

On the other hand, NO offense, but
-if you are a photographer and you know what you are doing/shooting than why would you ask others to tell you what you should do? I could understand your question in a specific situation/subject but in general... (??)
-if you are a gear collector, than you can pick anything (blindfolded) from bh, adorama or your fav store's menu and will be happy with the new toy even if you use it once a year.

Instagram/Facebook is probably hating it today in the short term but I doubt they'll change anything. They'll just move forward knowing how fickle people are once the coolness wears off of quitting their beloved photo app service. It's easy to join the crowd and do the easy opt out while everyone is shouting but it's a lot harder to stick to your guns a week later. I would be interested to see how the analytics look from this time to after Christmas and Jan 15th when everyone has been sitting around bored taking lots of pictures to share in their holiday free time and parties with their new iDevices and camera phones. People in general are sheep. Instagram probably picked a great time to make this announcement.
