What do I tell him? Pls help, he thinks I am a cool photographer but I really do not know how this works. I would love to help him and learn.  THX.

Technical Support / Best Possible IQ
« on: December 10, 2013, 06:53:38 AM »
Friends.
I am super excited. I have been asked to take a picture for a large coffee table book and the photo will be a two page spread. Within the next three months I am going to be shooting a landscape photo of an old religious city. I am supposed to take a photo in early morning light on which the client will do a LOT of post work - add and remove elements, color correct etc.

My brief is to shoot this on the best possible format.

My questions:
1. What should I use? Obviously it should be large format but since I do not know anything about large formats, 'backs' etc., where do I start figuring out how to proceed?
2. Which lens would translate into a 25/35mm of our full frame Canon? I would shoot at f11 so do not need a lens which is great wide open.
3. Would my heavy Gitzo and Arca be stable enough for this or I would need something else?

Above all I need to know which is the best large format system available today to shoot at ISO 100/125.

I want to stay digital and not shoot on film.

All help sincerely appreciated.

Canon General / TEN YEARS FROM NOW.
« on: November 25, 2013, 10:18:33 AM »
It is a bit quiet here and until the 7d2 or the high mp camera here is something for us.
I think it may be fun to predict what camera technology will be like in December of 2023.
Here are my few predictions:
1. DSLR's will be used only by top end sports/wild life shooters.
2. Mirror less would have evolved and be thriving.
3. Point and shoot would be dead.
4. Canon cameras will have 4 stops better ISO.
5. There will be lenses with 6 stop IS.
6. Canon and Nikon would share equal percentage of the market.
7. Canon will have 65 mp full frame camera.
8. The fast version Canon camera will shoot 18 fps.
9. DR will be around 16 stops.
10. 1d form factor will stay.

We all need to put our thoughts down by early next year and then look at this ten years from now and tickle ourselves.

Technical Support / Questions about PSD to JPEG conversion for Web.
« on: November 01, 2013, 04:21:00 AM »
Hello.
I want to add photos to my website and am figuring out the best way to save .psd files for web. There is too much of conflicting and perhaps dated information on Internet so am requesting you all knowledgeable persons for help.

I will tell you my current procedure and questions in details for you to comment properly
Photoshop Version CS5 extended.

Step 1: I reduce image size to width 1200 pixels.
I leave the resolution to whatever it shows. On my sample photo it reads 240 pixels/inch.
QUESTION 1: Someone told me it should be 72. Others said it just does not matter! Does this make the saved file larger than what it needs to be for web? Would higher resolution not be better? What should the resolution be at?
I resample image to Bicubic (best for smooth gradients)
QUESTION 2: Is Bicubic (best for smooth gradients) the best option or should I use bicubic sharper (best for reduction) as I am indeed reducing size?

Step 2: I apply Smart Sharpen
As size reduction is supposed to cause sharpness loss. (I learnt this at the famous KR site). Settings of Smart Sharpen Filter: Amount 100. Radius .2. Remove Lens Blur. (I must admit I do this blindly to all photos regardless of their inherent sharpness levels.)
CONFUSION: Supposing I used Bicubic sharper in step 2, could I avoid this step?

Step 3: Save for Web and Devices.
Settings: Quality 100. Progressive. Convert to sRGB. Image quality: Bicubic.
QUESTION 3: Should quality be 100 or 70? I read somewhere that 70 gives best quality/file size balanceā€¦
QUESTION 4: Should I tick Progressive or Optimized? What is the difference?
QUESTION 5: Why do I convert it to sRGB?

Some of this may be basic for you but any and all help you provide will be appreciated. Also let me know if you can direct me to a website that you think describes the process perfectly.

THX.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Banding concerns. What am I doing wrong?
« on: September 22, 2013, 12:48:05 AM »
I am attaching two versions of the same photo - untouched RAW (size reduced) and processed (size reduced).
The processed photo, on size reduction, has BAD banding in the dark areas. My processing values a (Camera Raw) are:
Contast +34, Vibrance +30, Saturation +8. Blue Saturation +24. Also brightened the eyes.
Rest are ALL untouched.
What am I doing wrong to get the banding? Hope my camera is able to handle such non severe processing??
I hope it is me and not the camera. If it is the camera, I do not know what to say.

Shots taken of a relatively famous person. I will be very impressed if anyone can guess who she is. Hint: the green chroma sort of shows her fame.
Photos taken by 5d3 and 85mm on a movie set which i am cinematographer of.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Magic Lantern insecurities...
« on: August 31, 2013, 09:34:23 AM »
Hello.
Is there ANY reason I should consider not installing magic lantern on my 5d3?
Large file size and faster cards is not an issue, IQ is.

Please advice.

Thank you!

Canon General / Thrown in deep waters... throw me buoys pls..
« on: July 27, 2013, 08:33:30 AM »
In just after two weeks I am going to a major wildlife lodge in Africa in the middle of migration - their busy season - for 10 days of Safari in exchange for teaching the staff and clients photography. I have faked my way as a photographer so far. Now I am in the deep end.
How do you think I should handle the situation? The staff there is expert and the the clients rich and from all over the world.
What do I teach them? How do I teach them? Am so nervous.
Things which come to my mind are: Back focus, exposure compensation, servo focus, selecting focus points, raw v/s jpeg. Pls pls add to this list with hints on teaching and techniques. THX
