Canon General / Guess who! :)
« on: September 09, 2013, 07:31:35 AM »
Shots taken of a relatively famous person. I will be very impressed if anyone can guess who she is. Hint: the green chroma sort of shows her fame.
Photos taken by 5d3 and 85mm on a movie set which i am cinematographer of.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Magic Lantern insecurities...
« on: August 31, 2013, 09:34:23 AM »
Hello.
Is there ANY reason I should consider not installing magic lantern on my 5d3?
Large file size and faster cards is not an issue, IQ is.

Please advice.

Thank you!

Canon General / Thrown in deep waters... throw me buoys pls..
« on: July 27, 2013, 08:33:30 AM »
In just after two weeks I am going to a major wildlife lodge in Africa in the middle of migration - their busy season - for 10 days of Safari in exchange for teaching the staff and clients photography. I have faked my way as a photographer so far. Now I am in the deep end.
How do you think I should handle the situation? The staff there is expert and the the clients rich and from all over the world.
What do I teach them? How do I teach them? Am so nervous.
Things which come to my mind are: Back focus, exposure compensation, servo focus, selecting focus points, raw v/s jpeg. Pls pls add to this list with hints on teaching and techniques. THX

Canon General / Adorama Rocks. Helen double ROCKS.
« on: July 10, 2013, 10:53:58 AM »
ADORAMA is the BEST. No questions, discussions.

Do you know that Helen sleeps in shifts to cater to her world wide clients because of the time difference?

Hats off to her. (Yes, I do wear a hat at times. Check my photo in the publications. LOL.)

EOS Bodies - For Video / DSLR Video Questions.
« on: June 03, 2013, 07:48:15 AM »
Although I am a professional DOP working on RED, Alexia etc, I now am doing a job for the first time on DSLR and have so many questions and need all the help you all can provide. Please help!

The gear available to me:
5d3, 1dx
Zeiss 14 2.8, Zeiss 35 f1.4, Zeiss 135 f2 (on its way)
Fluid head tripod.
Lexar 1000x 32gb UDMA 7 card
A three year old Imac for editing.

Nature of job and crew:
I will be going to small villages and shoot lifestyles of people as artistically as I can. Mostly decent light, occasionally low light.
I will shoot lots of interviews with audio.
I have a focus puller and lighting assistant.

I want efficient frill free equipment that does the job. However, keeping gear light is not the first requirement, getting professional output is.

The edited videos will be viewed mostly on internet and at times projected on a mid size screen.

My questions:
1.   Do I need another monitor besides the LCD on the camera to check focus etc?
2.   Which is the best slider for price for DSLR?
3.   Which is the best way to record audio? Do I record on camera or external recorder and sync using a slate? I have a BeachTek DXA-SLR available for free. Is it any good?
4.   Should I use Magic Lantern software or original Canon RAW? If magic lantern, then which version?
5.   What is the ideal ISO for video? And if not ideal, what is the acceptable range for noise free work.
6.   Is 1/50 the only shutter speed to work at or it does not matter?
7.   Will my Imac be ok for the edit? I will not buy an Imac now until it is refreshed, but just want to prepare myself on the speed of edit.

ANY help is appreciated sincerely.

Thank you!

Animal Kingdom / Wrong Photography Ethics?
« on: May 09, 2013, 12:08:04 PM »
I found the sky boring and added clouds to make it more interesting.

Do you think this is cheating? I really want to know.

Am very confused. I have made changes but not altered nature. Have I done something wrong?

Thx

Canon General / Desired fantasy gear
« on: May 07, 2013, 07:04:20 AM »
Am wondering what gear we all want that is not being manufactured yet but we wish it were.

I start:
A focusing screen (for cameras that accept interchangeable screens eg 1dx and 5d2) with proper split screen focusing aid. This will help me use Zeiss lenses better and focus manually Canon lenses in low light etc.
And, if I could: 24-105 f2.8 IS with good corner sharpness. This will be my ultimate travel lens.

Thank you.

Canon General / Diglloyd
« on: April 27, 2013, 08:40:53 AM »
Hello.
Anyone subscribe to Diglloyd photography site?
I want to know if it makes sense to pay for this site. Most photography information is available online for free so wondering if this paid site is worth it.
Always trying to learn...
Thx.

The low noise of 1dx at high ISO plus the 1.2 f stop of the 85mm lens open up options of night street photography which were difficult before for me.

Am loving it as I love to walk nights where ever I travel and take photos. Many times I am working in day time with my real job and do not get to do any photography.

Am loving it!

Lenses / Prediction for 200-400
« on: April 10, 2013, 01:17:35 AM »
Hello.
I have a two month African Safari coming up in September/October of this year.

Do you guys predict the 200-400 f4 will be available before that?

Asking because this is a very serious trip and I need to start sorting out my lenses from now.

Thanks.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Exposing to the left?
« on: February 24, 2013, 11:09:25 AM »
Hello all.
I find that both my 1dx and 5d3 expose a bit to the left and not to the right (recommended by many).
Am I mistaken or any of you also noticing this? 1dx does this bit more than 5d3.
I work in aperture priority.
Should I dial in slight over exposure in the compensation menu or leave it as is and boost in PS?
Thank you.
Sanjay
PS-I am spending next ten days in Masai Mara and will go to lengths to find internet to see your helpful comments. So please respond at your earliest! :)
