Lenses / Re: Tanzania with minimal gear
« on: September 29, 2013, 04:27:09 PM »
Here's a few of my thoughts:
1.  I was in Africa two years ago with my first digital kit: 60D+18-200mm kit lens + 100mm macro.
2.  I have since added a 7D body, 70-300L, 10-22, 15-85, Sony RX100 P&S
3.  What I found on my trip is that the only time I felt comfortable changing lenses was in camp under dust-controlled conditions which was fine because the 100 macro was only used in camp shooting plants and insects.

If I were in your situation I would do one of two things:
1. Take 60D (so I had video available) with the 70-300L for wildlife (and reasonable macro) plus the Sony for wider-angle landscape and safety when in cities.
2. Convince a family member (you did say this was a family trip?) who is not into photography to share the gear load with you in exchange for your incredible images.  One person would carry the 60D + 70-300L, the other the 7D + 15-85.

I know many would argue that the 70-300 should go on the 7D for wildlife but I found wildlife to be so cooperative I didn't miss the better autofocus of the 7D when I only had the 60D.  Also, since the 60D allows for video, you can switch between stills and video with the good range of the 70-300.

Software & Accessories / Re: Adobe to Stop Making Packaged Software

I think I am done with Adobe for now.

I have LR4 and PhotoshopCS5.5.  I was going to upgrade to PSCS6 on a perpetual licence before it disappeared but now I am stalled on that too.  I don't like what I have been reading about the Manager that gets downloaded with it.

Their release of LR5 is actually more buggy than the beta's that for a slap in the face for the CC early adopters.

No, I figure if I can't make my images better with what I have now, then I need to become more focused on becoming a better photographer rather than a better PP'er.

Maybe, maybe I'll consider LR5 down the road (5.1, 5.2?) once they fix all the things they broke in it by rushing its release because I really like the looks of that radial gradient filter (I'm too lazy to get good with flash) and only if it continues to be a perpetual licence product because I do plan on upgrading my camera within the next 1-2 years.  I have already learned how to live with the disconnect between ACR in LR and ACR in PS and my world still turns.

But for me that's the bottom line - stabilize LR5 and they'll get my $79 upgrade dollars.  But no more PS for me.

Give me perpetual or give me death!   ::)

I upgraded because its the main software that I use.  In fact, it may be the reason I finally upgrade my desktop to 10.8!  i'm still in 10.6.8... I;ve managed to doge other reasons to upgrade.... LR may make me do the jump.
I upgraded from SL to ML last week in anticipation of LR5.  Now I read that the Slideshow module in LR5 has quite a few problems and I use that module a lot.  So I am going to hold off for now and see if they fix Slideshow in LR5.1.  So now I have ML, with which I am NOT bonding, and sorely missing SL. :(

Thank you!  I always refer to this as the "PBS Nature" shot  ;D
Note, I had to amend the date - was actually there in July

Thanks for posting this Ramon.  Even before your post, I had decided I would have nothing to do with CC.  I'm currently on LR4 and PS CS5.  My intent is to get the PS CS6 perpetual license upgrade and call it done on PS unless they relent in the future and provide upgrades via perpetual licence.  I will continue to upgrade LR via perpetual licence as long as they make it available and it meets my needs.  If LR goes CC only in the future, I will move to Capture One.  In fact if I hadn't invested so much time learning and becoming skilled at LR, I would move to Capture One now because I think it is a better raw converter.  But I'll stick with what I am familiar with for now.  As a hobbyist, I will not get roped into the Adobe CC world.  I can see how it works for larger companies, but not for me.  And since they have made it very clear they don't give a hoot about the consumer cohort I belong to - even more reason to shun their cloud.

Thanks RienzphotoZ and nWmR12.  You are right, when I go to "Edit photo in" the entire suite is listed.  I didn't think they were there because I was looking for them in the plug-in manager and they didn't show up there.  :-[

So I pulled the trigger and bought the suite earlier today.  I have both LR4.3 and Photoshop CS5.  I can only see all the Nik plugins in PS, they are not showing up in LR.  Is this normal?

Just to reiterate, having just read some of the "experiences" others have had with CL and eBay, I haven't had a single unpleasant transaction yet using:]   In fact, have met some really nice people.

If you sign up for membership here: you can post on their buy/sell forum.  They don't charge like the Fred Miranda site does.  That's where I've gotten most of my used equipment.
