Lenses / I'd love a little adivce...
« on: March 06, 2013, 12:19:02 PM »
Hello CR crew,

I'm in the market for a nice 35mm prime, pref some thing old with a little character. I purchasea Carl Zeiss 2.4 Prakticar PB mount and unfortunately it striked the mirror on my Canon 5D Mark III. Anyone know of any nice 35mm lenses that work well on this body? Full manual is fine as I'm mostly shooting video over stills.

Cheers,

Ed

This is weird. I'm going to do some test shots this week to see if I can replicate the so called dead pixels in normal photos...

5D MK3.

The battery is charging and then I'm open to any requests for test shots to help answer any questions people have. I'll then upload the RAW/JPEGS. I only have my 24-105 with me at the moment.

EOS Bodies / 5D Mark III and M42 Lenses
« on: June 19, 2012, 12:41:24 PM »
Hello fellow CR member,

Does anyone have any experience using the FLEKTOGON CARL ZEISS JENA 2.4 35 M42 FIT with a Mark 3?

Does it clear the mirror ok? Any more thoughts on this lens?

Thanks a lot and have a great day.

I pray that the new lenses don't suffer from that horrible recoil after the lens has finished hunting for focus.

if you mostly shoot video why yuo getting the 5Dmark III? the video is even softer on the mark III...I'd get the 5D2 and save a bunch...

Have you even used a 5DIII or are you just repeating what you've read here and there on the web?  I'm guessing if you're putting it down then you don't have one.  It isn't "softer" than the 5DII, I have both and shooting with the 5DIII is a pleasure compared to the 5DII.  It handles noise much better, virtually no moire/artifacts, 1080p HDMI out makes pulling focus much easier, it's a beast in low-light and (most importantly) it responds to changes in post infinitely better than 5DII footage did.  With the 5DII even changing the white balance could seriously degrade the footage, the artifacts made it damn near impossible to sharpen, not to mention the annoying moire.
And the video features are barely anything compared to the massive improvements on the stills side.  I don't see why people think they are qualified to recommend/not recommend something they have never used, cut it out.

Sir, you just made me pull the trigger. I thank you.

Hello Mr 5D MK3.

It was a bit silly of me to mention the AF because AF doesn't matter to me at all but I thought that perhaps the whole full frame/automatic stance might be something that would sell really well for Canon. Thinking about it you're right about the undercutting the C300 and I'm most probably just being paranoid.

I think you are being paranoid. Have you looked at the Gh2 hacks? That seems to be the best bang for your buck video right now.

Also, the c300 will always have better DR over any 5D variant, presuming it uses the same 5D3 sensor.

Yeah I like the GH2 a lot but I'm not so sure I'd purchase one as I know the GH3 is just around the corner, I've got a pretty close relationship with Panasonic UK and I know the GH3 is in the wild. Hopefully I'll get my hands on one soon.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on a 5D MK3 and I mostly shoot video, can someone please throw me a 'you're doing the right thing' bone. I'm worried that what Canon might do is make a video orientated entry level full frame borrow the AF technology from the new 650D/T4i.

Can you see where I'm coming from?

I hoping they will, but it almost certainly won't have AF.  If they made something with distinctly better video than the 5D3, with autofcus, it would really undercut the c300.  Why do you need AF anyway? The DSLRs will never really focus smooth enough or fast enough to do proper video with AF.

EOS Bodies / Grey imports...

I'm sure we've been over this a millions times before but I just want to put it out there again and hear some fresh input.

Simple problem. I live in the UK (we get charged a lot for camera gear) and my sister is in OZ but is popping back to get married, as you do. I'm getting her to grab me a 5D MK3 and a lens or two that I'm going to have delivered to her in Sydney from Singapore....

All well and good when it comes down to money saving, I'm gonna save myself around £1000 which is just brilliant, the problem is the fact that the warranty will probably be void...? Can anyone shed any light on this as I'm getting so many different answers when reading online.

I've never had any reliability issues with Canon products in the past but yeah, any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ed

Can anyone make out if there's a headphone port icon on the side? I tried zooming into the image, but can't tell. If it has audio monitoring via a headphone jack, this camera might be worth the upgrade from my T3i

Doesn't look like it. I can see a timer input and mic input and then on the other flap its HDMI and something else....possibly headphones there....

EOS Bodies / Re: What's Next? A General Breakdown

I don't understand the logic behind canon releasing the c300 and then a 4k cinema dslr... I am not a videographer so know very little about it. However, I do know the c300 is NOT 4k. If canon releases a 4k dslr, would it theoretically produce a better image than the c300 but with fewer cinema controls and options?

I just don't understand.

A pleasing images is not completely reliant on resolution. Take the Arri Alexa for example. It's only 2K, but is considered by many as the best overall picture for video; even when compared to the 4K Reds. The Codec plays are huge role in the IQ. Even though it's a good camera, the C-300 is very overpriced and under spec'd compared to Sony's similar offerings. No camera that is 4:2:2 8 bit should cost 16K. For that price it needs to be 10 bit to justify it.

With that said, early reports on the 5D3 are pretty disappointing for video. Many are seeing that it's still NOT true HD, but STILL an up-res'd 720p, which is crushingly sad considering there are $900 cameras with true 1080p HD.

But it's still a Pre-Production model, so hopefully Canon will do the right thing on the final release and have TRUE 1080p that the customers deserve. I'm thinking that the upcoming 4K VDSLR will have to be a home run for video, because the C-300 was not and it's starting to look like the 5D3 has been deliberately crippled, at least on the Pre-Production models.

But for the 5D3, I guess we will have to wait for the retail model and get some real tests for the video. I'm holding my breath till then. If it's not up-res'd 720p, I would gladly buy one and also the 4K VDSLR when that comes out. If not, I'm going to wait for the 4K camera.

What are you chatting about? Not true 1080 HD? Since when...?
