when using the Canon 400mm 5.6 L lens with either the 3.5 limited or 8.5, there's a significant improvement in accuracy and speed.   Prior to this 4/30 update I found the lens a bit slow to focus.  I don't believe its my imagination but has anyone else notice a speed pick up on AF and perhaps even better accuracy while using this lens?

I might try embedding meta tags - these are searchable and traceable.  there are also many forms of copyrighting images of which you can read more about here:

http://creativecommons.org/

you don't state which copyright you are allowing such as All Rights Reserved or Attribution 3.0 Unported

also, embedding the images as BBCODE here vs. a straight upload would allow your web site to track an IP address when someone clicks the image.  This is a just in case you feel someone stole your work vs. here where you are not an admin and have no access to IP logs.

The heavy watermark embedded in these photos is not a safe secure way of protecting your work and may cause the interested party to look away vs. stare at the image as the watermark (as others state) is a bit obtrusive.

Excellent Eagle shots Bill

Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) by Revup67, on Flickr

Because of this Vultures high contrast and lack of color it is typically a difficult bird to properly expose while in flight.  Finally this one turned out quite well.  The ambient light at this very moment was just ideal as well as the bird's altitude for a 400mm on a full frame.  It's tricky as you have to overexpose by 1-2 full stops to get the under carriage but then that kills the white beak..even highlight recovery is useless at that point.

Lenses / Re: Focusing Problem with 600mm f/4.0L IS II with 1.4X Extender

Wade..in calling Canon only yesterday and with a mere 5.6 L 400mm I had a difficult time focusing on a bird.  In speaking with canon that asked I checked the outside temps which were within normal range at 79° F, check the limiter either on this lens 3.5m or 8.5m and I was a good 30 feet away so either was OK (not sure what limiters if any are on the 600mm), made sure AI servo was off and on One Shot with single AF point (not the one used for Macro - saw your disclaimer that you had checked this.  It boiled down to there was not enough contrast that causes my lens not to focus properly.  Ultimately I wound up doing a manual focus.  I think you hit all the right steps but did you include the calculated MFD with the extender attached ?  I didn't see any notes on the eagle as to how far away your were and if you met the MFD total of lens and XTDr combined.

Neuro thanks for the fabulous breakdown on your use of Focal..excellent.  I have found all my shots on all 9 lenses are razor sharp now with Focal but as you say you need excellent lighting or don't waste your time and no vibration..stable flooring is key.

So many great shots on this page 55 ..don't know where to start..Steven, Anand - those owl photos are truly incredible..keep 'em coming!

Got up close 'n personal yesterday with this American Kestrel.  Upon existing the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, this usually skittish bird allowed me a few quick shots before taking off.  Though all were quite nice, this one is perhaps the best
