If you are patient, especially around the holidays, B&H usually have some of the best deals out there.  Especially some of the package deals they throw together.  Can't beat them.  Plus they are always great to deal with.  I have also met a few of their reps at conventions and seminars and they are first class all around which is why they continue to get my business.

A few weeks ago I bought a 60D body from them on ebay as the price was the lowest I had seen around and their seller rating was excellent.  They shipped very quickly.  It was when I received it that I discovered it was grey market.  It was missing the normal Canon documentation and CD software and the instruction manual was not genuine.  It almost looked like a copy of the real thing.  Everything else was genuine (battery, charger, strap, cables).  It also came in a kit box but just included the camera body so it looks like they were removing the kit lenses and selling the bodies.  I was still ok with all of that but when I turned the camera on and tried to shot, it had the err 30 issue.  Since I had no USA warranty I knew I was screwed so I called them up and they issued a RMA # and sent me a prepaid shipping label.  Once it was returned it was about 3 days before I got a credit for the return.

In looking at a few of their other listings, it appears that the non-grey market item will specifically state "USA Warranty" in the listing.  My listing did not state this.  It seems like if you are willing to take a gamble on the low prices they are worth the risk as their customer service was great in my dealing with them.

I saw this post following a second Best Buy post, and not to warrant a repost, but here is what I recently posted- hoping maybe someone following either of these posts will have some tips or ideas that can be of help:

Not sure, haven't called Best Buy to check, but I pre-ordered about 5 days ago and was immediately put on back order status as seems normal with the rest.

Today, I got a notification saying it's still on back order. Still value all of the points I'll be attaining through the Best Buy purchase, plus since I bought it on their website, I should be getting 5% cash back through Discover so I am too vested to swap, but was curious if anyone thought it was worth attempting to find one of the 5d3's in stock and swapping to a pick up order. I purchased the kit, however, and not the body alone.

Anyone think it's worth a shot? I noticed some posters were posting around 5pm and it's only 3pm here in Southern Cali, so I'm not sure if that means I should wait until a little later today before calling. I got into photography about 5 or 6 years ago, got a 20D which I've been using since and lusting after the Mark II and finally saved up and chose to bite the bullet thanks to this release So eager to start shooting.

I think it is worth a shot since pre-order/backorder status of online orders for them seem to have the most questions around fulfillment.  Probably depends on the CS rep you get when you call too.  The one I had was extremely helpful.  Good luck.

I cannot wait to start seriously shooting with this camera.  It feels so solid in the hands.  I just got back from Photoshop World in DC and while many people bring their cameras there to shoot, I did not feel like carrying it around all weekend yet I was thinking about it the whole time.

Could you give us details about the store itself so we can use that as ammo to get Best Buy to release their copies?

No real details other than one of their regular brick and mortar stores in my area.  Not all locations seel the higher end cameras and if they do it is usually the kit.  When I called to check on my pre-order and received no details, I asked if any stores had any in stock as that function is not available on the website for a pre-order.  There was one that had two bodies in stock.  I asked if I could change my shipping pre-order to a store pick up order and the CS rep said yes.  I then received the confirmation email soon after that it is available for pick up (I will swing by after work).  I have a feeling this may be an exception for pre-orders but there may be an embargo for off the street sales until 3/25.  BB usually lists stuff like this in their weekly fliers with Sunday availability dates. 

You may try and call a store if you do not have a pre-order to see if any are available.  You may get someone who has no clue about sales embargos and such and will let you purchase it.  Good luck!

Update to my post above.  I just received the email from the store that the camera is available for pickup!  Maybe the embargo is for off the street purchases and pre-orders could be the exception?

I pre-ordered from BB on 3/2 and immediately was put into a backorder status.  I called today and the CS rep had no specific info other than it was still on backorder with no other info.  I asked if any of the area stores had any in stock and there was one that had two.  She made no mention of sales embargo.  I just need to wait for email that it is available for pick up.  Even if by chance they cannot release it until 3/25, that is better than not knowing when it will ship.

I usually got with B&H for purchases like this but the camera alone would extend my Premier Silver membership through 2013 plus I would get a ton of points from this.  Based on the other threads, B&H did come through in the end on 3/22, even though their communication skills were suspect.  However, the last thing a large retailer like that with a dedicated customer base would want to do is set a bunch of false expectations.

I pre-ordered from Best Buy as well the day of the announcement.  I figured the photo specialty places like B&H and Adorama would be swamped with pre-orders.  Plus I am a Premier Silver member and the cost of the camera alone satisfies my status for another year.

As far as the $100 S&H, I saw that too on the site but when you add it to your cart, the S&H was free.  Being that they are the largest big box electronics store, I would also expect them to have decent in store stock as well.  I know when the Nikon D7000 was released in 2010 and there were all types of pre-order delays, a friend was able to pick one up off of the shelves the day they were released.

I went the eBay route and I listed it both with an auction and buy it now option.  Someone bought it with the buy it now option about an hour after I had it listed.  I was pleasantly surprised.  I wound up losing $50 based on what I paid for it new which was less than if I had rented it during that time.

I decided to sell it right away to beat the expected surplus of used Mark IIs out there (there was a noticeable increase right after the Mark III announcement) and the expected price drop of a new Mark II.

Dropping fast, especially since it will remain in the Canon lineup at a lower retail price...

I'll keep my 60D as crop body and use it while waiting 5D III to be arrived.

Update: Well guys...within couple hours. I'm no longer 5d II owner. The camera is sold to local buyer - through Craiglist -- Sold for $1945. I gave the new owner all paper works & receipt. We both happy campers.

Wait --- I made $45 dollars profit???  I bought this camera NEW last X-mas for $1900 at BH and now sold it for $1945.

I sold my Mark II last night for $1950!  I bought it at B&H in December for $2K.  I am more than happy that I only lost  $50 overall and I will be putting it toward the Mark III purchase.  While the Mark II more than suited my needs for what I like to shoot, there is nothing like new technology.  I have been a gadget freak all of my life and DSLRs are amazing pieces of technology in my opinion.

I pre-ordered mine through Best Buy.  I usually deal with B&H but for two reasons I went with Best Buy...1)B&H most likely has a ton of pre-orders so who knows when I would receive it.  2)The price of the Mark III satisfies my Premier Silver status for the year in one fell swoop and it was free shipping too. 

Anyway, I just received an e-mail letting me know that the camera is on backorder and it should ship out within 1-2 weeks.  At the most that would mean I would get it sometime the week of the 19th.  Most likely it is just an automated e-mail for backordered items but what is strange is that it was a pre-order.  I will be interested to see when it is actually delivered.

While a $1K price increase over the mark 1 version will prevent me from buying the lens, I have a feeling that once we start seeing the tests and image quality of this thing, people who make money from their images will have no problem laying out $2300 for it.
