Price it at $2999 and you'll have quite a few takers who can't quite make the financial leap to the f/2.8 version

As always, buyer beware.  This is most certainly a grey market camera (some people care about that, others don't) and this seller has a reputation of selling used cameras as new, or missing parts: http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=bigvalueinc&iid=230828116912&de=off&items=25&which=negative&interval=30&_trkparms=negative_30

A little one sided, aren't we?

I like being a grownup. I get to make my own decisions...

Of course, there are definitely a ton of positive comments too.  As I stated earlier in the post, some people don't care about grey market -- others do, so yes you can always make your own decisions.

The trouble with the type of feedback that has been given is that it is often for shipping used cameras when the buyer purchased a new one, or taking out some of the included accessories.  Slow shipping, poor communication, shipping damage -- that all happens, and I've sold about 2500 items on eBay so I know the complaints that I've had against me.

There are numerous 5D mkIII listings where it was shipped without accessories -- that should never ever happen. It just pays to do a little research and decide if you want to chance such a large purchase from a dealer who has been known to have honesty and trust issues.

These don't have a sun directly in the shot, but I thought they went with the general theme.

Everyone was losing their heads over the price of the 5D III when it came out (it wasn't much different than the mkII if you include inflation).  The camera is a fantastic piece of machinery and the AF woes/shortcomings of the mkII are more than made up in the latest iteration.

Congrats!

Reviews / Re: Review - Canon EF 50 f/1.2L
« on: January 12, 2013, 12:33:35 PM »
I've owned every version of this lens (1.8, 1.4, 1.2) and they are all worth the price you pay.  The 1.2L does amazing work, but you also have to have a good command of the camera with such razor sharp DoF.  I noticed a little backfocusing in low light, but it produces top-notch images 95% of the time.

Seriously -- almost ever "deal" that is posted about a great eBay price is for grey market items.  Either spell that out (here on CR) or don't post it.  Many people view it as an endorsement of a reputable vender - akin to specials at B&H, etc.

Yep, 1DS III was $8000 at release and for the first few months.

I'm truly confused as to the market for the mirror less cameras that fall between the G1X series and an SLR.

1. With any lens, it is not pocketable.
2. Requires company to make an entirely new set of lenses on a new mount.

What kind of customer is best suited for this niche?

Or buy the D20, which isn't a 3 year old camera.  I owned the D10, loved it, but it is seriously old technology now and not worth whatever Amazon is asking.

The 1080p video @ 24fps is a HUGE step up from the 640x480 or whatever crappy resolution we had on the D10.

A niche product, but I'm happy Canon is still making it!

Site Information / Re: Bring Back Karma – NOW!

Maybe it's just the threads you're reading.  I think people have been pretty civil now that the 5D is finally shipping.  Fewer people will be frothing at the mouth about the 1DX lag time so hopefully it's smooth sailing.

Karma never seemed to be a deterrent for idiotic behavior anyway.  I for one am glad it is gone.

CF cards are coming to the end of their run.  My local pro photo shop only stocks the very best CF cards and they are priced very steeply as it is an old technology consumers are moving away from.   I am confident the camera would last me years, I am not confident about finding reasonably priced CF cards 4 years from now.
I'm not sure that I agree with the idea that CF cards are slowly being phased out.  They are still faster than SD cards by a good margin and they are a staple component with most photographers.

Maybe in 4-5 years SD will have improved even more, but I think we'll see other technologies jump into the space (cue D800 specs) before seeing the end of CF.

I wouldn't be surprised to see another month delay.  After all, it takes time to reconfigure the firmware to handle f/8  :)

Hopefully with the removal of the Karma system, there will be fewer newbies hurt by a (trivial) scoring system and we can concentrate on the comments and discussions themselves.

Sorry to see you go, and hope to see you back some time when the 5D III whining has ceased!
