EOS Bodies / Re: What will be the response to the D3200?
« on: April 19, 2012, 12:49:57 PM »
I mentioned in the 5DIII DxO freak out thread, but Canon has a big time marketing problem on their hands. Particularly on the low end, competing against the D3200. Unless Canon pulls a rabbit out of a hat, people looking at their first DSLR are going to see Nikon 24MP > Canon 18MP, Nikon DxO results > Canon DxO results (regardless of the stock you put in the scores, many people will be influenced by this)... and then finally, price. We don't know what a T3i successor will cost. But at $699 MSRP Nikon is offering a pretty remarkable value.

Nikon brought the house this round. Hopefully Canon responds similarly.

The numbers are the numbers; the approach seems reasonable... for the specific conditions they test. It's still related to the sensor only, and it doesn't take away from the generally awesome performance of the MkIII.

Canon does have a significant marketing problem on their hands now, though. People are going to read today and for the foreseeable future that : Nikon Sensor > Canon Sensor, Nikon 36MP > Canon 24MP, and D800 costs less than MkIII. Most people aren't going to get in to many philosophical debates about what the DxOMark scores actually mean, they are going to see the above and buy Nikon. Quite frankly, Canon is going to have this problem at the low end as well, with whatever they release to compete against the D3200.

I love Canon, but they got caught with their pants down, marketing-wise. Doesn't mean that their cameras take bad pictures. But taking great pictures is only part of the story when people decide what to buy.

I'm guessing Canon prefers a staggered launch approach of the various crop for marketing reasons?

What if... and I know, big if... Canon simultaneously anounces multiple updates across the crop lineup and lets the price points and features be what separates things? Wishful thinking, I know. But man would I love a new crop sensor this year. And timing/price will make that determination!

So then it is a bit curious that the T3i would be discontinued, unless a change in Rebel strategy is coming down from Canon.

Had the same problem in Firefox. Confirmed the problem to be related to Adblock Plus. Once I allowed the stylesheet through, all was well again.

I'd love to take it off your hands. I just don't have any money to offer. :) Congrats on the new 5DIII.

Dude, just get the D800, 'K?   ::)
The D800E is for espresso, obviously. :)

Then I hope they get to announcing 60D and 7D successors real quick. :)

Lenses / SI Swimsuit Issue... Canon Gear
« on: February 16, 2012, 10:05:51 PM »
VH1 aired a "Making Of" special about this years SI Swimsuit Issue... and maybe I missed it, but I didn't see a single Nikon. All Canon gear. Unfortunately, I'm not quite good enough to recognize all the gear used... I definitely saw a couple 5D Mark IIs, a 1D of some sort... a 24-70L, and numerous white lenses. Anyone else catch this and can identify what gear was utilized?

(It's on again on 2/18 at 11:30am)

I'm sure the producers didn't quite envision me watching the show for this reason. haha.

Thanks,
CTMike

Two really good videos... thanks for those.

Not to muddy the waters further, but a 60D might split the difference between the T2i and the 7D nicely, leaving you more flexibility for lenses. Just a thought... Good luck!

EOS Bodies / Re: My 9.8mp 70D dream
« on: February 01, 2012, 06:40:05 PM »
Well... as I'm looking to purchase in November this year (and thus hoping that there will be a 70D at that time)... I will call you crazy as you invited. :) (Kidding, of course).

For me, I feel awfully comfortable with a T2i in my hand... 7D is a bit of a stretch for my capabilities and budget... so for me, if I were buying now, I'd be all over a 60D with a decent zoom and a prime.

I get what you are saying though. Do I REALLY need 18MP or could we stand to benefit more from better ISO/range/all that... for now though, I hope they improve everything, without any one spec taking a hit. To me I don't think there's anything wrong with some nice incremental improvements to an already nice camera.

Well, I'm one of the "first time posters", but I have been lurking here since...uhm...at some point in 2010 - just haven't had much too say - guess I must have been too busy actually taking photographs  ;)

Anyhow, the reason I started posting is that I am looking to upgrade my camera - I have pretty decent set of lenses, but my camera is just the 40D I bought back in 2008, and I intend to upgrade this year - which is why I am following the talk about soon-to-be-announced hign-end cameras with considerable interest.

So, who knows - maybe some of the other "first-timers" are in a similar situation.
Same! Been lurking for a long time, but I know I'll be purchasing a DSLR before my honeymoon at the end of the year, and like to keep up on things.

Would the OP consider a refurb MBP? Apple's warranty on refurbs is still quite nice.
