Well here is my problem. I would like to review all my RAW or JPG files quickly. If I go one by one in LR it takes 5 seconds for LR to display each one at 100%. OTOH, I just did library->previews->render 1:1 for 70 5dMKIII files and it took about 5 minutes for that process to complete. So I am just disappointed that LR is not meeting my workflow needs.

Well, LR certainly takes its time when rendering 1:1 previews, esp. on non-turbocharged hardware - however, with 5sec per shot, you're still way faster then my trusty ol' laptop :-o ... but you can work around this, at least a bit:

* disable nr and esp. sharpening when importing files, this speeds up rendering time considerably. Only add sharpening and nr when you've got pictures reviewed and are in the last stages of postprocessing

* render 1:1 previews when importing and/or in advance and do other meaningful things during that time like drinking coffee :-p

Can you tell me how to disable nr and sharpening when importing files - I haven't found those options for Import. And I would have thought the default for any processing during Import would have been "off"?

Lenses / Re: Can a UV filter affect IQ (sharpness) on a lens?
« on: June 04, 2012, 09:25:56 AM »

1. Weather sealing. A lot of L glass needs a filter to complete the seal.

Says who?  Canon?  If Canon says it's weather sealed, shouldn't that mean it's weather sealed without a filter?  I'm not doubting you, just requesting a reference.

Several Canon lens require a filter to "complete" (the key word being complete) the weather sealing.   Example, 16-35, page 7.

Is there a list anywhere for the Canon lenses that require a front filter for complete weather sealing?

Lighting / Re: 600ex-RT & Gary Fong

I have the Fong Collapsible Lightsphere on my 600 EX-RT. It wasn't much trouble getting it on; the opening of the Collapsible Lightsphere is pretty flexible. I actually like the fit better than on my 580EX II - it is easier to collapse the Lightsphere when on the 600RT-EX Speedlight. And I love the nice even lighting it provides - best flash diffuser I have used.

Downloaded the latest LR 4.1 but I don't see any improvement in speed for things like viewing at 100%. In Library it takes way too long to go from Loupe View to 100% - as long as 5 seconds.

Is your problem that it takes to long to render 1:1 views or that even after library->previews->render 1:1 zooming is slow?

Yes, it might have been Syl's review. But apparently there is no battery level gauge - until the "low battery" indicator appears on the LCD screen somewhere.

I must be having a "senior moment." I thought I had read a review of the 600EX-RT that said it now had a battery level indicator. The only reference I can find is on page 15 of the Manual that states an indicator will be displayed when it is time to replace the batteries. Also, I don't see any info in the Manual for the location on the LCD panel where that indicator will be displayed?

Could an omnibounce for the 580ex2 fit the 600ex?

I don't have the 580EXII Omnibounce with me, but holding the 600EX-RT next to the 580EXII the shape of the two units are different enough that I don't think the hard plastic of the Omnibounce will give enough to fit over the 600.

I am happy though that my Fong Collapsible Lightsphere does fit over the 600EX-RT.

Technical Support / Re: 5D Mark III, save video on SD??

donjensen - the problem I have is Lightroom, on a PC, doesn't download the MK III videos. LR 4 downloads and imports raw and jpg stills but not the video files. I have to use Zoombrowser or Windows Explorer to download the videos from the card.

The 600RT has a "gel sensor." The flexible Canon gels fold under in the holder so that they cover the sensor and can be detected by it. Wouldn't that work for third party gels that can be mounted the same way? Are you saying the manual says it can only detect the two gels that come with the flash? That doesn't seem right but I don't have my manual with me right now to check.

And, does Photoshop CS6 overwrite CS5 or leave it to be uninstalled later?

Anyone know if it is necessary to uninstall Photoshop CS6 Beta before downloading the official CS6 upgrade version?

According to my 5D3 Manual on page 125 it says with bounce flash it will automatically use the 400-1600 ISO range when you are in P or A+ Modes.
