I was thinking of buying some Nik software, but with the new Photoshop CS6 coming maybe I should wait. Anyone know if the current Nik software will need to be upgraded to work with Photoshop CS6? I would assume so. And if I buy the Nik products now, will they qualify for free upgrades? I don't see any info on their website yet about this.

EOS Bodies / Re: Why would Zeiss do this?

"Why has Zeiss blacked out the Canon 5D MKII logo's on this picture about their new 35 f1.4?"

What new Zeiss 35 f/1.4?

The Zeiss 21/2.8 ZE is in a league by itself. Excellent sharpness even out to the corners. The only Canon lens in that range that is as good is the TS-E II 24mm, but it costs even more than the Zeiss. I have seen used Zeiss 21/2.8 on Ebay in the $1400 range recently. That's where I got mine. And it works great with the 5dIII.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon 5D3 vs 7D for birding thoughts
« on: April 04, 2012, 07:06:24 PM »
So far, based on Alan's test, there is not much difference in IQ between the the 7D and 5DIII cropped to the 7D's frame size. But to neuroanatomist's point, it isn't always that simple - especially with small birds. There are times my 7D and 600mm with extenders won't get a frame filling shot and I will need to crop the 7D image. So the "extended" question is what happens to the 5DIII's IQ when it is cropped to to the same size as a cropped 7D image?

BTW, good discussion here.

I have the SET button set to magnify and use the Main Dial on top to zoom in and out.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D III focus accuracy with fast primes wide open

My 5DIII is working great with the 35L 1.4 wide open. Accurate focussing in low light in the center and extreme left and right focus points. And ISO 3200 is amazing.

The OP says, "low CA and edge sharpness would matter a lot more to me."

I have both the Canon TS-E 24L II and Zeiss 21 f/2.8 and can recommend them highly. Both are much sharper in the corners than my Canon 10-22 - which is a good lens. If you want to go wider, without miniaturizing the landscape with an ultra-WA, consider a panorama sequence and stitch the photos together in software.

7D+17-55/2.8IS and 5D+70-200/2.8IS II is an excellent combo which I use alot, especially indoors. When I am outside and need more range I put the 7D on a 100-400IS. Two cameras and three lenses get you 27-640mm with fantastic quality and minor lens swapping.

EOS Bodies / Re: HDR Photo From MK3
« on: March 03, 2012, 04:36:21 PM »
HDR appears to be only JPEG while the Multiple Exposure Stacking is for RAW and JPEG.

"In-camera HDR shooting

In addition to the Multiple Imaging, the EOS 5D Mark III also features in-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) shooting, thus allowing the creation of expanded dynamic range JPEG images. With HDR shooting, the camera will capture three images for each shot taken, with one being under-exposed, one correctly exposed and one over-exposed. These are then combined in-camera to create a single image.

When shooting HDR images, you can select the exposure range between the captured images or allow the camera to work it out automatically to suit the overall contrast. The manual range is between +/- 1 to 3EV. When the camera is processing the HDR images, there are several options on how the images are combined. These options range from Natural, which provides a natural looking result, to various creative effects like Art Standard, Art Vivid, Art Bold and Art Embossed."

I could see in camera HDR being useful for panos. Apply HDR to each individual pan shot as you take them in camera and then stitch the already HDR shots together in your software on the computer. As long as the HDR process can be controlled so the resulting exposures will be uniform among the panned shots it could be a big time saver.

Where is the DOF preview button?

It looks like it is on the other side of the lens mount and a larger sized button.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: EOS 7D + 100-400mm & 400 F5.6
« on: February 28, 2012, 08:34:36 PM »
The 7D does excellent autofocus. There are alot of custom settings and it helps to get familiar with them to maximize the 7D's autofocus capabilities with moving subjects. While the 400 f/5.6 is known for it's fast focussing the 100-400 with a 7D is no slouch and should provide very reliable and fast auto-focussing.

Lenses / Re: Canon 400mm f5.6 L lens - upgrade needed.
« on: February 27, 2012, 11:41:31 AM »
I have wanted an EF 400mm f/5.6 IS for years. But now I would rather have an upgraded 100-400 IS with better IQ. And a 500mm f/5.6 IS if it could be half the price of the 500f/4 or the new 200-400.

EOS Bodies / Re: Eye Control Focus
« on: February 25, 2012, 06:07:06 PM »
The EOS 3 was a great camera but I never got to the point where I was comfortable relying on the eye control for selecting focus points. I would much rather have more full cross sensors and autofocus at f8 on the new 5DMK III than eye control focus.
